I don’t understand how to separate the art from the artist. It’s akin to being like, “I know that priest abused children, but his sermons about loving your neighbor were so meaningful for me ❤” how do you not always and forever hear the hypocrisy or bigotry or manipulation dripping through the art?

I don't like the whole tenor of this conversation. It's so judgmental--as if you were the puritanical parent of these artists. You DON"T know them, and you certainly don't own them, and that's what I'm hearing. So don't go to their damn movies or read their books. Do you really think you are changing the world that way? Right-wingers have no monopoly on the hive-mind.

Neil Gaiman is a new one that got me losing hope in humanity again...

@@paunesjourney I know he divorced Amanda Palmer and seems to be an absent kind of father for their kid, Ashe, but not sure if that’s what OP was referencing. He writes dark stuff. I’m sure he struggles immensely with his mental health.

Star Wars was a major special interest of mine for many years but it's been ruined hard for me. From the really poor quality of the recent Star Wars releases to the really toxic fanbase, I just can't enjoy it anymore.

When older things start on new releases it’s a recipe for disaster, I’ve still not fully regained my love of Peter Jackson movies since he did the hobbit 😅

@@DanaAndersen The Hobbit movies were a huge mess haha. Thankfully for me they don't ruin my enjoyment of the LOTR films and the novels. When a new release for a special interest of mine is announced I still get that surge of anxiety and worry though lol

Dead End: Paranormal Park does a really great job showing this in Norma’s story arc whom is canonically autistic and creator of the show is autistic - highly recommend.

I’ve told myself that I’ve simply paused my Rowling consumption purchases until after she has personally passed away and does not benefit from my money, then I can start officially engaging with Harry Potter franchise. Liking it, the first editions I ALREADY HAVE are fine to read and lend out, nothing in the book is anti trans so it’s just keeping the fantasy safe for the good fans now until we can take it back. I totally understand not wanting to watch a show because someone associated with it won’t just own something bad being bad! How hard is that? 😅 But for it to ruin a part of a special interest really sucks. I hope it’s not all of it for you!

Yeah harry potter was my special interest and now it is ruined so i get no really joy out of it anymore. Then my next special interest Sherlock was ruined once i finally figured out is was queerbaiting...a year after the final season had aired 🙈 so yeah my special interests can be sad to get out of but with time i think if something goes against our values it is important that we are able to disengage.

Had part of both these experiences, I didn’t let them be completely destroyed but I had to freeze my acceptance of the fandom in my mind at a certain time and mental place. 🙂

I swear like 70% of the autistic community has been personally offended by Sherlock at some point for some reason 😂😭

I didn’t know that about Sherlock 😅 at one point about 10 years ago I knew some scenes BY HEART because I’d watched them so much… now I don’t enjoy it as much (I think it’s not aging very well tbh).

I don't know I never have special interests fully ruined. Sometimes they die down a bit for a while out of nowhere. I always dislike it when every interest has died down a bit and you need to find a new one/reignite an old one. A lot of my special interest that are series get less when there are no new episodes or films in that series.

It really frustrates me that I don’t get to enjoy the Gryffindor robe I bought at the Harry Potter world before JKR publicly announced her bigotry. It was expensive and I was excited to enjoy it for years and years and it just sits in my closet, completely unlovable. I don’t want to throw it away, I definitely don’t want to sell it. I can’t even pretend to enjoy it at home - my partner is trans. I’m bitter about JKR’s crap,

HP used to be my special interest but I won't be giving JKR anymore money following her awful comments. I was even considering a HP themed tattoo and am now relieved I was too skint to get around to doing it!! Have to admit though, I'm sooo curious to see how Strike ends, and charity shops are a good option for used books as it's win/win- help a charity, boycott a terrible person! It's a strange mixture of curiosity and annoyance I now read her newer books with though, they're page turners and I'm finding myself engaged to see how they end, but there are terrible views of hers coming through with some of the characters and storylines. In the past I put it down to, oh, it's a whodunnit, the characters aren't supposed to be likeable, everyone's a suspect, but now the rose coloured glasses have lifted. Her books are not the happy, safe space they used to be, more of a morbid curiosity iyswim. Like watching a documentary about something dark and being gripped with curiosity to see how it ends... idk if I'm expressing this well but I hope that makes some sort of sense! So many former favourites have disappointed me over the years- Morrissey, Joss Whedon, Marilyn Manson, Marion Zimmer Bradley, with the latest one being Neil Gaiman.

My ex-wife and her bff once did a HP movie marathon for me since I was the only one who'd never seen/read any HP. When we got to the part where the goblins were shown on screen, I was kinda shocked. I'd grown up in a pretty racist household, and knew more slurs than I ever wanted to. I brought it up to my wife and her bff, and they didn't even see it, simply because they weren't raised in that and their brain didn't make that connection. I figure this is kinda similar. There are things I still engage with from terrible creators, but as long as they aren't benefiting from it 'it's ok', and as long as it's not actively triggering a trauma response from me to read/listen to it, 'it's ok'. Instead of so much, 'I don't like this creator, therefore their works are bad'; it's more 'what was it about them that was bad, and is it too much for me to get through their work?'

Can confirm if you make ya whole life about HP, I will trust ya less 😂 that said I won't begrudge anyone watching or consuming the media, just try and avoid paying JKR. For me, minecraft is one, the original creator is a absolute a hole, I use to want to make games for a living so I looked up to indie game devs but turns out hes a nasty peace of work
