Can't speak for other countries and their tax laws, but the IRS doesn't have all your information to file taxes. That's why they need people to volunteer their own returns. I make just over $100k a year, which is not even top 10%, and if I had to trust the government to keep half of the records required for me to file taxes, and everyone richer than I had a return as complex as mine, the IRS servers would instantly crash. The fact that they have your W-2, I-9 and a couple 1099's does not mean they know exactly what you owe. That is a myth.

Your little throwaway line, "you actually know exactly how much I owe, so you could just tell me, and I can pay that exactly," is so true and infuriating. These comments are making me nervous though. “I’ll just throw them away and they can print new ones if they’re that important” No, you’re going to get audited and lose your shirt in the process because the government (at least where I live) doesn’t care about you.
@friendlyfilmz Жыл бұрын
@@eileensnow6153 I 💯 agree. And I have several cabinets full of these idiotic nightmare “records” to cover my arse if needed. But I still think it’s very very VERY stupid. Stressful, unnecessary, and just pedantically stupid. Like, we as a society living in the digital age can’t come up with a more realistic and easy solution?? Really? REALLY? Yeah, okay. Let’s keep up this dumb grownup charade. Ugh.

Yeah, leftover from another era, when we cleaned out my grandparents house we had to destroy like 50 years of documents, they kept Everything! Like back in the day, did you know that banks would actually send canceled(already cashed) checks back to your bank and they would give them back to you to keep, for your records.😂
@shaynaformity1384 Жыл бұрын
Back before payments were digitally scanned, that was actually necessary. If an employee made a clerical error, you could send in a copy of the cancelled check to prove you made the payment.

The only reason U.S. and many other governments don’t offer a “we think you owe this much” pre-filled tax document to sign from the data they have is because the companies that prepare them for U.S. lobbied against it. It’s a lovely “true conspiracy” of accountants and bookkeepers.

Business manager/tax attorney here. This is funny stuff and pretty on the nose for some of my entertainment clients. One note: the IRS can generally only audit back 3 years, not 7. The exception is for 'gross' understatements of income (understated by more than 25%), which adds another 3 years. HOWEVER, you should keep things like home purchase/improvement documents as long as you own the home. Doing that makes my life much easier when you sell. And thanks for the great content.
@MisterItchy Жыл бұрын
I like that she's gonna audit you which means going line-by-line through your records for the last seven years and it's going to take a long time. The records that you just said you don't have. Good luck with that.
@DanKaschel Жыл бұрын
The IRS has its own records. According to its records, you owe a lot of money. An audit is your opportunity to prove that you don't owe all that money. If you have no records, you pay the huge bill and that's it.
