I had a student , young man in his 20's at the time , that had done some time in prison and he just could NOT get out of that mindset . Or maybe the mindset is what lead him to prison . Either way , if anybody even looked at him funny he would confront them , get in a fight and end up back inside . I was hoping training would give him the tools to manage his temper but it just never took and I had to drop him as a student. I hope he grew out of it . A wiser man than myself told me long ago " If you get in a fight you'll either end up in the back of a cop car or the back of an ambulance ." I want neither . I just want to go home at night and have some red wine and a cigar and my pride isn't worth giving that up .

something we ought to know and bare in mind is this physical fact... this next will be obvious for many if not most of us. when we lose our temper the body goes into fight or flight mode which means it begins to perform a type of triage on the blood flow, restricting the flow of blood to our organs in favour of feeding our muscles. the organ which most donates it's usual supply to our muscles is the brain. what that means is that our iq will drop a minimum of around twenty two percent and a maximum of around twenty six. this is why, for instance, in the heat of a domestic argument, on reflection, we have often said some real mean, nasty and completely out of character things. we quite literally "lose our heads"!

The old, out of shape guys talking shit and picking fights just mystifies me. I know they are letting their egos get the better of them but they are going to get mauled if a younger guy decides today is the day he's not holding back. I'm in my mid-50s but am still in decent shape, practice BJJ and move around pretty well (with the qualifier) for a man of my age. HOWEVER, I also know that I am significantly slower, less explosive and less resilient than when I was in the military in my 20s or even as average office guy in my 30s. I can feel the difference in my reaction time, it's kind of wild. It can almost feel like moving in slow motion. Everything hurts more as you get older - falling, rolling, getting hit, etc. and your recovery time is so much longer. Rolling in BJJ in a controlled setting against younger guys is a humbling, eye-opening experience, let alone a full on street fight. You quickly learn to appreciate how much more energy and explosiveness the younger students have just by virtue of being younger and halfway in shape. Testosterone is a hell of drug. And if that younger guy has any level of training in wrestling, striking or grappling, then your chances amount to slim and none. I've learned enough and am in-shape enough to defend myself if cornered but I never to want to pick a fight with some random person over silly bovine manure. If I lose, then I'm likely getting really injured or killed. If I win, then I'm still probably injured and may be looking at issues with the police. Lose-lose.

I saw a guy get triggered from across the street here in the US by a valet parking guy who was laughing at him. He charged the valet and the valet pulled a handgun on him. Both of their lives could have been altered forever in that moment but fortunately nothing happened and it was 100% avoidable by both sides.

You gotta be willing to go through with it, knowing you could lose. Determination to stand your ground is essential in my opinion. If it isn't worth the risk of losing and likely getting hurt, then don't do it. Being loud and threatening means very little to the guy with determination to see it through win or lose. But I'm not a fighter. Knowing how to fight can make a world of difference. But only if the fight it worth the risk to you. A man resolute in his convictions with some preparations can win against great odds, just because he is willing to take it all of the way to the end. Also fighting ability isn't the end all be all in this. A concealed carrier doesn't have to be a fighter as long as he is willing to stop the threat.
