Andrea Mendenhall From historical researchers Pereira & Seabrook, Global Parasites: "It still is common practice for [the descendants of colonizers] to blame disease alone for the decimation of Native populations, thus exonerating themselves [and lineage] of any moral blame. However, such deaths were seen, by the Puritans particularly, as the Lord having "cleared our title to what we possess." 130 million natives died over a 400 year period, or around 90-95% of the native American population. Now, if even 80% of those deaths ( which it is very hard to actually determine a precise percentage due to the complexity of the issue ) were caused by disease, that still leaves 26 million natives dying of violent cause, which is 6.5 million every 100 years. Also, those diseases did not kill both sides equally, the europeans had been dealing with such diseases as scarlet fever, typhoid, small pox, etc., for years, and they were a childhood disease for them, with most adults being immune. The natives had no such immunity to these diseases, which meant that it killed adults as well as children and disrupted populations far more than the europeans.

doobiewah357 it was an american colonel who told his troops" kill all the buffalo you can, every buffalo dead is an Indian gone". -American Environmental History: An Introduction. Native Americans came, from Asia via the Beringia isthmus over 15,000 years ago. And yet, the american bison population began its decline from 1600 to 1870, when they were declared extinct. Now, it may only be coincidence, but i do see the correlation between american colonization by europeans and the decline in the population of bison in america. As well as the already discussed fact that the native population fell, within the same time frame, by 90-95%.

doobiewah357 appeal to authority fallacy, your argument has no merit, its pure hearsay. "The species' dramatic decline was the result of habitat loss due to the expansion of ranching and farming in western North America, industrial-scale hunting practiced by non-indigenous hunters, increased indigenous hunting pressure due to non-indigenous demand for bison hides and meat, and even cases of deliberate policy by settler governments to destroy the food source of the native Indian peoples during times of conflict." -81] Records, Laban (March 1995). @Knightmessenger
@Knightmessenger 8 жыл бұрын
The argument is that an individual state government (like Utah) has no official representation in DC, while the country Uganda does because of the ambassador. The other thing is that senators weren't directly elected by popular vote because the founders didn't want most of the government to be direct popular vote based. The president is chosen by the electoral college, judges are appointed by elected officials. Only the House of Representatives was originally elected by direct vote. The fact that the Senate was not was yet another way they wanted the two houses of congress to contrast and balance each other. (House was intended to be more rash and impulsive and directly do what a majority wanted, Senate was supposed to be more thoughtful and deliberative which is why the terms are longer, the age requirement is higher, they approve judicial appointments and were never prohibited from doing things like the filibuster)

There was lots of loopholes. Almost nobody paid the full rate. And the high rate didn't apply to all your income - only to any part above $200k. But even so, it still had the desired effect, which was that almost nobody took income higher than that, since it was pretty much a waste. So they invested the money in worker benefits and factory upgrades instead, which is why the 50 year stretch with that high tax rate was also the only 50 year stretch we ever had without a major economic crash.

It's also not exclusive to the US, you can say that about every single country in the world. I think the world definitely was better before you left your dumbass comment, though.

The US was once the best nation in the World but the world moved forward and while all the other nations moved with it the US stand there and proclaimed "We are the Best in the World why should we change anything". This attitude is the reason why there are now so many Nations that are better then the US. People who just stand around and cry we are the Best are the ones dooming the USA while people like John Oliver (ironic a Britian) point out what is wrong and try to change it. That is real Patriotism.

@FrenkTheJoy
@FrenkTheJoy 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's really fair, though. Every country is going to have bad things in its history. That's just because of how humans are. America has contributed greatly to advances in science, literature, art, architecture, human rights, and accidentally shutting down Communist propaganda (USSR showing people a movie version of The Grapes of Wrath to show how miserable it is in the US, only for people to go "wow even the poorest American can afford a car!"). It's never been PERFECT. It's not the best country in the world now. But it's not like it's always been a massive sinkhole due to the racism and stuff. I mean, what country DOESN'T have a history of racism, xenophobia, and genocide? That stuff keeps the country from being perfect, but don't ignore all the good stuff because of it.

Those innovations are great that you spoke of but, you have to pull out a scale and weigh the sides. Does the bad balance with what was achieved? I feel like so far no but what do you think?

None of these people can give an answer to the question. When the Declaration of Independence was signed, blacks weren’t citizens, and weren’t even considered to be human - and they were treated accordingly. When the Constitution was ratified, it was not intended to give rights to blacks. It only recognized whites as human beings. In 1913, blacks were facing Jim Crow and the KKK, and women couldn’t vote. A few years later, the U.S. instituted the Filipino Exclusion Act. During WWII, we had just come off of the Great Depression, Japanese people were interned, blacks still faced Jim Crow, and the Tuskegee Experiments were taking place. Post WWII, white flight (a separatist movement) took place. Women still had no rights, and the prison industrial complex was still in full effect. Black war veterans had no rights, while white veterans were endowed with a bunch of social services programs to assimilate them into the middle-class - or better. During the 1980’s, whites launched a campaign to steal back the urban land they had abandoned by floating drugs into the cities, which also resulted in the needless deaths and incarcerations of young black and brown men and women - along with the destruction of thousands of black and brown families. Furthermore, if America has always been great, why are the words “make” and “again” used in the slogan? If America was never great, the word “again” has no applicability. No matter how you slice it, the words “make America great again” are a dogwhistle slogan meant to stir up racist whites. These people want to go back to a very different time-period, but they won’t admit what that time-period is. They’re a bunch of racist (and sexist in the case of the males), spineless cowards.

@@bornkinggamer3347 I agree with you (TO A POINT.) It's TRUE that many Trump voters had voted not just once, but twice for OBAMA. But SADLY, in my opion, Congressional republicans, directed by Mitch McConnell MADE SURE THAT President Obama would face OBSTRUCTIONIST POLITICS the likes of which America had RARELY seen before. Now, we could debate forever as to whether or not the primary reason for this occurance was RACE or HYPER-PARTISAN POLITICS, (or a rancid mixture of BOTH.) For me, the takeaway is that our political system is overrun with Career Politicians who clearly, & BLATANTLY put "party before country." And, the fact that our (44th) Commander in chief just HAPPENED to be (Non-white) & was IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED by a Trump-like populist is, to me A STELLAR EXAMPLE of what can happen when an organized group of MEDIOCRE white males in high positions feel THREATENED. ✔🗿🇺🇸

By saying “nobody makes it to the top without breaking a few pieces of china” he is essentially writing off minorities and the injustices against them as small but necessary sacrifices in the success of the United States. I don’t think the play on words was intentional, but people seem to be ignoring the fact that his metaphor is horribly ignorant and racist even without the accidental “China” pun.

TheSarahskaninchen Nowadays they use mostly “native American” because in the era of political correctness some people started to find the term “Indians” offensive. Just with the black population: Asthonishingly the term “Negro” was really ok during the (about) 1970ies, than “colored” was politically correct in the (about) 80ies, then that was suddenly offensive, too, and was therefore changed to “Afroamerican” and now it is for reasons unknown to me “African American”. But we already see a backslash to that and most people simply use “black” now. Ah, the intricacies of language....

In Britain the media basically portrayed Brexit voters as racist without really looking into all the reasons why they were voting to leave. I have no issue with immigration and think it benefits our country. I voted to leave because the EU is not democratic, instead its run by civil servants. People have given there lives for democracy, I was willing to risk a bit of damage to the economy.
