One thing I learned was not allowing others to take advantage of my availability. Just because I'm retired and have free time doesn't mean I'm available 24 7. Some of my relatives try to manipulate me with that tactic. I'm 70 years old and want to live a peaceful life.Thank You so much for sharing this information.

Wow, sorry to hear that you’ve had to deal with sneaky manipulators to try and get you to do things just because you’re retired. It’s absolutely disgusting that some people have the gall to think that they have some kind of claim and right to someone else’s time, energy, and resources just because they feel like it. I’m glad you recognize their tactics and aren’t falling for their tricks.

My neighbour has even asked me who the people were at my house!! She’s commented on the fact I went food shopping 6 days after had been before. It feels very stressful knowing she’s watching everything I do, mind it’s all the neighbours because she gossips about everyone. I got my garden fence 6ft and double panelled so she can’t see through (that’s a U.K. garden). I hate nosy neighbours with nothing better to do.

The intrusive gossip, I just simply don't answer the door. Im too old to care about some one who doesn't really care about me, but, just wants to gather information. If I happen to see her outside of my apartment, I do talk nice, and, instead of answering any question that I don't want to answer, I smile and say, Sorry, gotta run. See you later.

A most positive straight forward video, I’m 82 years and I have deleted an obnoxious neighbor out of my life as when she retired she thought I was going to be her best friend shopping as I have a regular size car and shop for plants and groceries in abundance as she has to drive a small sports car as thinks brings her the attention she desires. I had to tell her that I would not be shopping with her. Thank you so much, I feel like a good person……my wants and needs come first!!! You are the greatest!!! As a fiercely independent person (perhaps to a fault), it sets my teeth on edge when someone, whether it is a neighbor, friend, or a romantic partner asks for too many favors. One lady I knew used to try to soften my guard by saying "Could you do me a flavor?" But of course it had the opposite effect.

Unfortunately not all relatives are mentally or emotionally balanced. Some have been alcoholics for years...and other things. Many are just plain NOT FIT enough to have a relationship with and some need professional help but never get it. All of which makes it impossible to have any kind of healthy interaction. It's just how the cookie crumbles but if you don't see and recognize that after several failed attempts, you are setting yourself up for years of heartache and disappointment. Access the reality of your relatives accurately and don't live your life hoping for something with them that will never come. And lastly, don't blame yourself, you are only one half. And remember that their emotional issues are not your burden. They have to get healthy first in order to function in a normal, rational, adult exchange.

My dad brought up all the properties around our house to keep neighbors at bay. One guy didn't want to sell. We never spoke to him. It's not just neighbors but the people you allowed into your home. Be choosy whom you let into your house. People carry energy. You don't want people with negative energy into your space. Make sure you have a garage to drive into. It prevents neighbors from monitoring what your purchases are.

My neighbor of 40 yrs has always been very nosy. When I first met her, she told me that my neighbor on the other side was a gossip and used selling Avon as a means to go house to house collecting info to gossip to the others about. But in the 25 yrs the other woman lived next door to me, not once did she ever knock on my door, though she was friendly when I would see her outside, but she kept to herself. Turns out the one accusing her of being a gossip was actually the one doing the very thing she would accuse the other woman of. This woman is nosey, prying, and will come right on in if the door is not locked. She wanted to see the new baby once and was told the baby was napping and now was not a good time. She pushed her way on thru and went to the bedroom anyway, promising to be quiet, and of course was not. She is 84 yrs old now and hasn't changed much. She will come over and sit for hours telling me every single detail of her medical procedures, even when I tell her to please stop because that kind of thing makes me feel ill. She even insisted on telling me every detail of how she inserts her enemas 🤦 She simply will not stop even when asked. I sometimes feel guilty that I don't offer to help her more. I've taken her to the grocery and so forth. But I drew the line when she asked that I carry a chair up her steep basement stairs. It has wheels and she wanted it to get around in when she had foot surgery. I told her I could not do it. Her stairs are steep, and tho I am almost 20 yrs younger than her, I'm still no spring chicken. I have arthritis all throughout my spine and I was afraid of hurting myself. So instead I gave her a walker on wheels that had a folding seat that belonged to my husband before he passed away. She said thanks, but I could tell she was not happy about it. Recently, I was feeling guilty, thinking I should try to help her more, then the next day she sent me a nasty text message because she didn't like something I posted on FB, saying she wonders about me sometimes. Then when she was going to have someone remove some branches from my tree, I went next door to tell her not to, as I was concerned that it would make the tree lopsided and possibly fall on my house. She used that opportunity to tear into me again about my FB post, and even accused me of having grand daughter's car towed, which I did not do. And then she claimed that she's always been a good neighbor to me. So I took that as my cue to just leave her be, as that all happened right around the time I was feeling guilty for not doing more for her. I unfriended her on FB, and I will no longer allow her in my home if she comes over again, since she has chosen to be quite hostile toward me lately. The hostility began right around the time that I was thinking I should help her more. So I'm taking that as a sign that I should not concern myself with her. She has a granddaughter in her twenties who can help, and also plenty of community help, having phone numbers she can call for help around the house, a ride when she needs it, and so forth, due to her health conditions and her age. So I think she'll be fine. Am I wrong to feel that way?

I live in a apartment rental senior residence . When I first moved here I was overly friendly with everyone, hoping to make friends. What a mistake !!!! When I realized that some of them were using power plays to see how they could manipulate me, or mocked me in subtle ways, it caused hard feelings when I had to extricate myself from them. I know I bordered on rudeness saying things like "I'm not much of a chit-chatter. Please don't speak to me."or even "The universe is telling me our energies are not harmonious, please don't speak to me." I know these responses sound harsh, but for my own self-respect I felt I had to break off any contact with them. That's the only way to deal with some people who mistake openness and friendliness for weakness and gullibility. Their disrespect was causing me so much emtional anguish I didn't care if they thought I was crazy or rude. Things changed over time and getting used to seeing each other. Now one maintains a respectful distance and we say hello to each other. The other one occassionally says "Hi" and I answer, but it never goes beyond that. I'm a woman, 75 years old, most of the women here are in their 70's, low 80's on average. The nasty ones (in a minority) gossip and do things to see how their target will respond, like 4 or 5 standing in a doorway into the building from the garden to see how the person they are focused on will react when passing them, which they did to me once. I regard them as "mean gitl grannies" When mean girls get old, their character remains the same. Don't be too friendly when first moving into a senior residence. In time, you will have the discernment about who you want to get to know better. And who you don't. Don't rush it..... Older but Wiser.

The daddy thing and parking at your door instead of his own are dominance moves. This guy is playing games and you are in his trap by living there. It's scary because you don't know how far he will go. The wife will support whatever he says. I hope you can afford to move. Contact a women's shelter if you need help or advice, and they can probably give you better advice on dealing with this guy than the police can.

I’m not a senior citizen but was curious about this video, so here I am. Honestly, I don’t think the suggestions are only for older folks, it’s for people of all ages. Nobody wants to be used by anyone, period, and no one wants to be around nosy and gossipy people no matter what age they are. I mean, who doesn’t want peace? Life is inherently stressful and difficult, no one wants added troubles from inconsiderate, manipulative, and self-serving people, whether they’re neighbors, family, friends, or relatives. I had to cut off contact with my entire family just to live a better life. I was too caring and loving and I was taken for granted and I just got tired and quit being a people-pleaser. I feel like a huge weight had been lifted off of me.

Well.the redheaded harlot, the husband stealer, the ultra inquisitive one, one competent normal neighbor, the talented drummer pimp for the harlot. the nurse gone most of the time. the family on corner lot, the dangerous loose dog owner. And the one who sits up cameras on trees pointed at your house to monitor all your life. In this situation I find a double fenced yard invaluable, also a quiet demeanor while tending to my yard and my own business. Never ever react. Always be calm with nerves of steel. Pray for my neighbors. Realise I may be the only happy person they know and it is why they act the way they do. Ear mufflers for noise, conversations, etc are also a cheap fix. Daily enjoyment is a must. Sometimes leaving a table of ripe fruits from yard helps.😊

Good advice. Especially about needy relatives. I’m 74, retired from U.S. government job of almost 30 years not counting active military service. Living comfortably with my wife who still works and the benefits and investments I’ve set up. But, I have a brother that’s 2 years younger than me who I’ve had to hand hold since grammar school who still can’t get his life in order and I’ve had to send him money several times to get him out of financial trouble. He won’t take advice on how to reduce his expenses but calls on me just like ever since 1959! Can’t keep it up. Impacting my own expenses. Need space without Catholic guilt I was brought up on by our mother.😞

Funny, that hubby and I had a talk about a ‘nosy neighbor’ and I told him to stop saying ‘hi’ with a smile. He said ‘I can’t help she seeks me out.’ I disagreed, that she is taking his ‘hi’ with a wave and a big smile as welcoming her to approach. I nod, And say ‘hello’, and keep moving with little eye contact and she doesn’t come over to me.

@@judywright4241Had to "not notice" when my neighbor comes running up to my car every durn time I drive by her home which is served by MY driveway. She holds a "maintenance meeting" once a year that isn't necessary. I pay taxes on the road, I pay fees and other charges but they don't offer to pay for it or any of the atty expenses, ins. Expenses etc that I incur for this property. I just want to live my life without them wasting my time or money. They want to set a "dust speed limit" on my driveway and only enforce it when I am in a hurry. I just get out my phone or dashcam and drive on by!

I'm 70 years old, and my next door neighbor had me arrested and sent to jail, what cost me $30,000 in bond and lawyer fees, my life savings as an electrician. I spent 5 days in the county jail, when I had done nothing wrong. All I did was try to be friendly and nice to them, but when I sent them a $60 gift card to a restaurant, they misunderstood my intentions. If you are nice to people nowadays, they don't know what this means. It scares them. They assume the worst, that you're out to get them. There was also a naive woman police detective who was part of this.
