I think I'd try to put a large farm tractor tire tube around it, then air it up, I'm thinkin this would add tremendous stability and buoyancy, only downside might some loss of ease of steering but I don't think that would be too difficult to overcome

I built a boat out of a sheet of plywood one winter (bored/ snowed in!) it worked OK, so I put an electric trolling motor on it.. and the Game and Parks guy gave my buddy (who was testing it) a ticket for having an unlicensed motorboat :( So, check your local regs, if it has a motor it may need to be registered.. I just went thru the process of registering my canoe, so I can use a small outboard on it (cost was $25 for title, $35 for 3 year registration in Nebraska FWIW)
