When you should and shouldn't take Multimedia Arts as a course (Philippines, Taglish)

Hello, design fam! I've noticed that a lot of students are asking me if Multimedia Arts fit their passion or likes. Are you a bit confused on what you should take in college? Let me explain my own perspective on choosing the right design course in college.

For me, the main reason why most will enroll in MMA is that it provides a Bachelor's Degree. If you specialize, the closer you will get is a certificate. Now, not all of us can afford to be in business or freelancers right away, you have to be employed to sustain our daily needs. Most companies will still look for DIPLOMA in their pre-screening process. As an artist, let's try to ground ourselves in these realities while we want to show what should be an ideal scenario. Because, ultimately artists are the extension of God in creating. Let's all make this universe how we feel our Creator wants us to give our talents and skills.

Here is my take on this matter; as Robert Heinlein famously wrote 'Specialization Is for Insects', when it comes to media industry if one wants to get big then learn MMA, besides, most disciplines in media like art, photography, videography, animation, etc. are interrelated. Whether which one you focus after finishing the study, you can be more equipped than just having specific knowledge of specific media art.

Hi, I'm grade 11 ABM student. Tbh pinili ko po yang strand na yan because I want to have a business in the future, a cafe for example. But at the same time I want to be an artist, I love anime, manga, manhwa and mahua so I always draw 2D characters, I also do digital arts. But I'm not really that skilled though and I want to improve both my digital and traditional art but I don't know what course should I take, kasi po kung fine arts, more on traditional art lang at kung mma naman po more on digital naman...

Okay so I hear you. If you really want your career based on one thing like making movies for example then take film BUUUUT for me it’s different I really like everything that comes with being a creative like film, photography, editing, animation etc and that’s why I want to take MMA. I want to widen my skill set but I would also like to make it big in animation, game developing like areas and if I just go to animation school I won’t get the other MMA qualities I want to learn about. It’s still a good idea to take MMA right?

Yes getting MMA is right! If you still want to have a specialization on animation for game development (and if you think you still lack the knowledge for it), you can take masters or extra classes after graduation.

After searching and searching I think I get it a little now. Im sure that my passion is art but I cant help second guessing that I really need to take a side course for back up,now that the government is thinking of remowving G11 and 12 I need to be sure what course to take Im thinking after enrolling to take HUMMS I might have made a wrong choice instead of picking arts and design. Getting opportunities really depends on your skill/portfolio and resume. All you need to do is give the best you can in setting up your portfolio and writing your resume. That's pretty much the weapon of a fresh grad :) But in terms of opportunities, sobrang dami nyan.

Hi po ate I'm planning to shift course po, yung naunang course po napili ko ay "information technology" pero hindi ko po talaga gusto at parang hindi po ako nag excel, pinaka may interest po ako ay more on editing videos hindi po ako ganun kagaling pero nag eenjoy po ako sya gawin. nadiscover ko po ang multimedia course dahil sa friend ko po, hindi po ako magaling mag drawing, zero knowledge din po ako sa graphics design or kahit ano po na design. pero nacucurious po ako matutunan ito at gusto ko din po idagdag sa skills na pwede ko matutunan. pero parang medyo nag aalinlangan or natatakot lang po ako na baka hindi din po ako mag excel tulad sa drawing or design.

Hello! Hindi rin ako magaling mag drawing. Tapos wala rin akong alam na gamiting graphic design software dati. Sa powerpoint and free apps lang ako nag eedit. Natutunan ko lahat sa college. Basta willing ka matuto, mag eexcel ka :)

do you think getting into orgs is a great way to get extra learning for things outside of your chosen program? I don't want to take the extra stuff MMA has to offer because I really want to learn and master animation and concept design. But I also want to have ENOUGH knowledge in using photoshop as a means of making graphic design outputs. As for graphic design principles im confident that animation teaches that too. But more on the animatic side of things. I do have another question. Do you have a mindset to suggest for people who want to take programs specialized on one thing but are afraid of only being stuck on it?? Because that's my current fear. I want to get better at art and animation but I'm afraid that I might only be stuck in that one place when I wanna do things like AE motion graphics, digital assets for online entertainers and the like.

Hello! A month late but hope this still helps. I didn't join any org when I was in college. In terms of extra learning, it can help. But what you'll get here would be network and support system. You can learn and study with org mates, improve skills together. At the same time they will be your network after graduation. It's great to have but not a must. For taking specialized courses: This pretty much depends on the person. I'm more of a generalist because I like doing different types of projects. I don't want to stick to one thing. Good thing about this is you are marketable. You can be flexible in different types of tasks and work. Con is that some great opportunities require special skills. That's where taking speicalized courses and masters comes in. If you're the type of person who wants to focus on a specific type of skill, take courses for that. It gives you the edge to take on bigger projects on what you really want, which is animation, but still have a chance to take on simple projects on motion graphics and digital art.

I'm a gr12 student and til now di pa rin ako nakakapag decide which course shall I take. Di ko rin kasi alam kung ano ba talaga gusto ko maging. It's too frustating. Just a couple of months ago, I was planning to study law, switched to political science, then if not, architecture nalang. Kagabi ko lang ni-consider taking mma pero nung nakita ko yung mga gastos napapa nvm na naman ako. In my situation, gusto ko sana yung mga courses na at least related sa arts, kahit papano kasi marunong naman ako kaso hindi pa enough in terms of skills and creativeness. And the funny things is, everytime my fam asks me what course I like, I have different answers, nakakabaliw legit.

You don't really need knowledge sa arts if you want to take MMA. But yes, it is quite an expensive course. If passionate ka naman, maraming ways to apply for scholarship and ways to earn. In your case tho, di ka pa decided sa gusto mo. I guess, you have to think of what you enjoy doing first. Yung hindi ka nagsasawa. Kasi 4 years mong pag-aaralan yun so kung hindi mo talaga gusto, you'll drag yourself in college. Baka there's something you never get tired of doing, something that you take the time to read about, then look for a course related to that.

Hello :) Yes. Advertising is more on strategy, promotions of product/service, marketing and media communications. There is a bit of design to it. MMA on the other hand is focused on how you execute collaterals: production and post-prod. There are also marketing and communication subjects but mostly focused on design. :)

It's alright if you don't have much knowledge in arts. If you're interested to learn, you'll be able to do it. And if you keep on practicing, you'll notice that you'll effortlessly get good at it. :)

Im a 23 year old slack off. Kami ang first generation ng K to 12 at noong college ng drop out ako ng school dahil kinuha kung course is Entrepreneurship kahit na ayoko. Nag drop out ako kasi mahilig ako gumawa ng Videos, Film, Video Editing, Music composing, photo manipulation, Drawing, Writing stories etc. Fit ba sakin MMA? Kasi ito talaga gusto kong work at pangarap ko maging trabaho ito. Well minimum wage earner lang ako at nalulungkot ako kasi ilang taon ang nasayang sakin. Yes merong painting and other traditional art subjects. Interviews and docus are part of MMA pero hindi siya main focus since very wide yung scope ng MMA.

I think your main interest is IT with a bit of graphics. You can go for Information Technology but take an elective track/major in multimedia arts. I also suggest Entertainment and Multimedia Computing. This is more on game and web development with design. :)

Honestly there are so many opportunities. But popular and in-demand design jobs related to your interest are motion graphics editor, illustrationist, animator, graphic designer. Including marketing into the scope, you can get into social media content creation or digital marketing (external), people experience communications (internal).

Maraming nag start na zero to basic knowledge. Ok lang na hindi ka marunong mag edit ng videos or hindi ka pa ganon ka galing. Basta willing ka naman matuto at magpractice, kayang kaya yan. Marami akong hindi alam nung college pero sinipagan ko lang talaga. Kaya mo din yan :)

You can also take Film if you're into creating short films and movies. In your other comment you want to become an art director. MMA can get you there if you also want to venture outside the world of film - maybe advertising, corporate, etc. But if you want ot be an art director in the film industry, I think that film will suit you better than MMA. :)

Hello! In terms of illustration and digital art, hindi masyadong focus yun ng MMA. Pinakamalapit na talaga yung animation na course, pero hindi lang siya static illustration, papagalawin mo rin yung characters and elements mo. :)

Hello :) Yung fine arts naman ngayon may halong digital media na rin such as editing, photography, video, etc. Important na kasi ang digital marketing and online media sa generation natin. Hindi ako sure sa industry ng fine arts when it comes to traditional arts like painting or drawing, pero maraming opportunities for graphic artists and digital designers. :)

Hi! although hindi pa ako graduate, but this might help. Try to find another skill other than sa arts, pang plan b lang ganun. Let's say, try doing stocks/self business/food service work. For me kasi, I really wanna make music, but MMA pinili ko kasi mahal tuition sa music, rn hindi enough ang MMA saakin kasi even though nagddrawing talaga ako, naddrain ako. So, I'm gonna apply for barista bcos I can see myself working with coffee and I like studying coffee. If I failed at MMA, may back up ako and by then, professional barista na ako. Ganun din if I failed at music. Actually, I don't think you can fail at anything, let's say It's just not working out that well AT THE MOMENT That's my suggestion! Hanap ka ng other skills na practical :)) altho pramis being a multimedia artist can be both a career and a passion ;) just surround urself w supportive ppl para consistent ang motivation! tho medyo mahirap, pero remember ikaw lang din ang magddecide para sa sarili mo!

Hello! Multimedia Arts can get you a job and good salary after graduation. Taking the degree is worth it, ang mahirap lang talaga yung gastos habang nag-aaral. As early as now maybe you can find internships where you can gain experience and at the same time earn. Marami akong kakilala dati na ang daming gigs or racket habang nag-co-college. Baka makatulong :) Tapos after graduation, mas mataas na yung marketability mo kasi marami kang nagawa. Goodluck sa journey! :)

Hello! Some schools I know that offer Multimedia Arts: iAcademy, CIIT, Mapua, and Enderun. Pero iba iba ang focus per school, so you might want to check yung program and curriculum that will fit you best. 😊

Hi! if ever na online school, I suggest STI may multimedia arts kasi sila doon and less expensive than Mapua/CIIT/iAc/Benilde. Pero kapag f2f, for sure I'd suggest CIIT and the others for school experience na rin, pero tbh pare-parehas lang din ang programs nila eh (I have a friend kasi sa CIIT, same subjs lang kami) I heard din na meron din sa LPU, rn I'm in STI and we've been doing a bunch of drawing plates every week, some digital arts posters and traditional ones, filmmaking na rin for skits and short films, tsaka photography :)) Nakakastress pero nahasa ako lalo esp sa drawing, kaya ko na magrealistic (1st yr palang me)

Hi! I'm not exactly sure if there's another exam for scholars. I think they undergo the same extrance exam for the university and have to reach a certain score. If you're applying for academic scholarship, your honors/grades in high school will be submitted for consideration. Some design schools offer portfolio-based scholarships. Your artworks and achievements related to design will be taken into consideration. 😁

Frosh year is all about traditional art and basic concepts. You might want to start with drawing and painting, basic photography, camera handling. Major subjects will slowly show up in sophomore year. But from experience, a lot of GenEd subjects will require you to submit art related projects since you guys are design students 😅 So you can also start learning basics in graphic design and video editing.

ICT is very technical while MMA is design heavy. Design is subjective and compared to something technical, there is no one answer. Expose yourself to diverse art forms and styles, experiment, and maintain an open mind. 😊

Yes, MMA is great so you can at least get a chance to experience different art fields. At the end, you can choose which one to focus on. :)

I really love how informative your videos are! I graduated with a degree of Psychology but I really want to learn design, that’s why I decided to study Masters in Multimedia Arts. HOWEVER, i did not anticipate that the Masters in Multimedia will be more on the theoretical and research based side rather than the actual, technical and practical aspect. Since I’m just currently on my first year first term, I’m having doubts if I will continue because I really want to learn the technical and application aspect, I want to learn how the technicalities of design and experience creative shoots. Right now, I’m also still waiting for my UP Open University application result in Associate in Digital Design and Art. Just want to ask po your professional opinion regarding the following: 1. Will a degree in Associate in Digital Design and Art give me enough background on the application aspect of the art and design, which is the use of editing softwares for animation, graphic design and creative production? 2. Hi! Here are my thoughts: Taking up a full blown course might not give you the needed skills and knowledge you need in your first year of study. There are a lot of general education and theoritcal subjects that you will discuss. Incase you already have background with design or at least know some basics, maybe you can try out short courses (3-6 month duration), specialized/certificate courses related to multimedia arts/specific art discipline. These ones have subjects that are already focused on design. 😊
