When You Taunt Police From a Jetski - Because They Can't Get You

Bodycam Footage of Man Taunting Police From Jetski
Florida Fish and Wildlife Officers were conducting uniform water patrol at the Lover's Key Boat Ramp on Ft. Myers Beach in a marked patrol vehicle. At approximately 1942 hours, they were engaged in a boater's safety inspection on an unrelated recreational vessel at the boat ramp when a blue and white PWC (personal watercraft) entered the docking area waters at a high speed, generating a significant wake. The operator of the PWC yelled, swerved the craft around, and quickly departed the area. The incident was recorded on the officer's body-worn camera. It's important to note that the waters surrounding the dock, outside the marked channel, are designated as a slow speed zone where vessels are required to reduce speed and remain off plane to minimize wake.
At approximately 1943 hours, while the boating safety inspection continued, the same blue and white PWC was observed along with another orange PWC, both being operated recklessly in the channel. The operators were observed maneuvering their PWCs at high speeds, swerving, performing dangerous maneuvers, and jumping each other's wake. This behavior violated Florida State statute F.S. 327.39(4), which requires personal watercraft to be operated in a reasonable and prudent manner at all times, without endangering life, limb, or property.
After concluding the safety inspection on the unrelated vessel and issuing a verbal warning for safety violations, at approximately 1945 hours, the blue and white PWC returned to the boat ramp area. An officer walked down the dock and issued lawful verbal commands to stop the vessel. Upon seeing the officer, the operator of the orange PWC immediately turned his craft around and sped away. The operator of the blue PWC disregarded commands to slow down and dock the vessel, instead accelerating away from the officer, exhibiting signs of intoxication.
At approximately 1949 hours, both PWCs reentered the dock area. The officer continued to issue loud verbal commands for the operator of the blue PWC to turn off the vessel and dock it. Despite identifying themselves as law enforcement officers, the operator of the blue PWC refused to comply with lawful commands and continued to exhibit signs of intoxication, leading to further reckless behavior and evasive actions.

I’ve have the marine patrol shadowing me a while back. I shut down within talking range of the officer and asked him if he needed to talk to me - “sir” He said no, and then I thanked him started up and started off up river. Around a bend I parked in close to a clump of mangroves. The area I’m talking about was devoid of building markers houses sea walls or speed zones. My girl friend said “what are you doing ?” I said “that cop is going to chase us and she she said “you’re crazy” 1 minute later here he comes at full speed. He saw us over his shoulder and whipped around and gave demanded that we stay in position and came along and put his sandy boot on my new boat. When he ask me why I was tuck off to the side, I said “because I knew you wanted to chase me”. He got refaced and did surly inspection, found nothing pushed off and went away without a word. That was at the start of police in the harassing people 50 years ago. Now, you can’t go out without being guilty

I know things have changed a LOT in thirty five or forty years, but my best friend has psoriasis and it would flare up a lot; sometimes even in ONE day (and I saw him daily as we worked together) it would just appear in large masses and often times it would go to his face. There is no cure but there have been advancements throughout the past few decades, and I remember him saying that his doctor told him the best way to combat a bad flare up was to get sunburned. He told him to go out in the sun and just get a sunburn and that would make the flare up not so bad and the itching would subside a little. He said it actually did help, but then you had to deal with the sunburn and the ill effects the sun's rays had on your skin. It's NO joke having a skin condition, but I get your point of the comment; this dude was just full of ish.

I just looked a breakdown of all of those and it appears that zero of them were the deaths of anyone other than the owner. The law should not be there to protect adults from themselves at the expense of everyone else. The law is there to protect one person from being harmed my another without their consent, and if a harm is done, then the justice system is there to serve that justice. You might already be thinking "well what if one of these drinkers hits someone else's boat or boat ramp? That's why there's civil law for people to recover damages. The same answer for if someone did that same thing when they were too naive, untrained, tired, or simply not carefully enough. Same goes for drinking and driving electric scooters. No one is getting killed by electric scooters being driven by those who might've been drinking. There's no way driving a 100lb electric scooter should be as illegal as driving a 2,000lb car or 4,000lb SUV down city streets.

Call me a boring person if you want but when I bought my new jet ski I went and got the list of every single thing that you need to have on board and bought it and it made me not worried about getting pulled over by water cops. It's typically a very inexpensive list of items. I remember getting stopped on my jet ski on the 4th of July one day at a local Lake and I showed em the fire extinguisher, whistle and all that good stuff and they went on about their day. The point is I don't know why people make it so hard on themselves.

Sometimes cops don't know the law and they are more or less harassing people instead of actually making sure people are safe...and they are not particularly nice as they go about their business. We have local cops who monitor the city beach but technically they cannot enforce any laws against people on the water as it is the jurisdiction of the sheriff. So if someone is in the water past the time the beach is officially closed they are committing no offense. You can get to the water from open areas. I always laugh about the lack of knowledge. Though I will admit, it is super creepy to be in the water when it is dark.

Funny that on growing up in GA hunting, boating, swimming and fishing NONE of my 5 brother-in-laws, 3 brothers and a father ever had one ticket or issue with wildlife or lake officers. What we had issues with were drunken boaters darn near running over people and kids swimming, or crashes into boaters and skiers. Believe it that these Wildlife Fisheries Officers save lives. Moved to MS and see babies and toddlers on boats without life jackets on as of 2 weeks ago. Dear heavens, the 4th is coming up with a night show of fireworks on the lake here. It is pitch black, if a youth appropriate jacket is not used, the only thing a diver can do is rescue a body.

Now someone, Yamaha? makes tiny jet boats with inboard engines. Turn the key and you're ready to go. Last summer someone here with 4 people in the boat plowed straight into a huge rock on the shoreline, all 4 dead. I understand hitting a log, getting caught in a wake etc but this was no docking gone bad thing, just plowed straight in. Autopsy showed no impairment so cause of death was just stupidity.
