My mom saw Prince in concert 12 times. I was thankful enough to see him once. Its covers like this that remind me how great his ability to write. In the hands of Rett (and friends) this is a completely different song in every way.

Wow ... mixed feelings about this one. Btw, great cover! Rett is a fabulous singer. Prince is personal to me, that particular song is a hard one to cover. But, the way SP / Stories covered it, shows me now just how fucked up the lyrics' story really are. I mean, you know, Prince couched the song in as a bubbly, pop R&B song; soulful, but fast-paced. Now I hear your cover, I realize the song's story is about a lover who doesn't care about experiencing infidelity during commitment, is bisexual, and is into lazy smut, and a girlfriend with a nasty lack of hygiene. This cover will have to grow on me, I am sure it will. I am glad you chose to work with Rett on this song, instead of an unknown, she has excellent vocal range and brings depth and soul that Prince also brought to the song.

You're right about it growing on you. I'm HAMMERING the replay on this, and it gets BETTER every time. I think it's Rett's emotion. I wasn't to familiar with this song, and have been compelled to search out every version I could find. Loved most of them, and was surprised about the Prince/Cyndi Lauper connection. Also Loved that Stories flipped it from being upbeat.

A news report suggested Prince's contract with Warner Brothers allowed him to bring new acts to the music label. Sinead O'Connor, Sheila E., The Bangles, and many more rode Prince's coattails to popularity. Except, Cindy Lauper only covered Prince's song, I believe she did not work with him.
