I agree with Brian. Hey, we're sitting around and consuming free, quality content made by good people - how good can it get?! Go easy on yourself and focus on having fun - then the stories will come naturally without having to squeeze water out of a stone! I enjoy just listening to you and your insights on various topics.

It's like this. I pull out my frugalfilmmaker T-shirt, stained, torn, housing a thousand stories, put it on and go about my day which includes some form of movie making. I still have several of your early builds that I use for a variety of jobs during the course of my time with the camera. Every day. Ups and downs. We all have them. Few can say they've been a guide and an inspiration. You are one of those people. You'll bounce back. Think of it as a period of gestation. We're still here.

Everyone gets burned out overtime. I shot weddings for 4.5 years and then just quit almost 2 years ago because of burnout. KZbin has changed the way they do things. It is harder to get subscribers. It is more difficult to make any money from a channel. There is a LOT of competition out there too. It also seems the more stupid channels get the viral videos and channels more serious like yours has a harder time to catch the attention of the gnat sized mentality these days. If you love it, keep going and do it just for you and when you don't love it, let it go. I see nothing wrong with breaks. Take as many as you need. I look forward to anything you put out so here is to the future.

Well I think the answers for everything are inside. If you really felt you didn't want to be in front of a camera, there is a message there. why is that? what was there before, that isn't there anymore? and why did you want to be in front of a camera when you did want to be there. I think this is a deep question in everyone's life and only oneself has the answer, but often times we stop wanting to do something because that activity was actually filling a part of us that wasn't real: ideals, prejudices, ego (not meaning it's your case, just mentioning examples). And then, because that wasn't real, or it didn't manage to fulfill the image or expectation that we had in the beginning, it all falls apart. I think you are in a deep natural process, and you are receiving messages :D I really and humbly recommend you (if you don't know him already) Eckhart Tolle His teachings are deep, simple, humble, and life changing. he even has a KZbin channel and speeches about motivation and so on. Just trying to say thank you through these words because you have taught me and helped me on my path a lot. :)

Hi TFF, I don't have any new creative ideas to add to those already here but I just wanted to say that I too come from a remote part of the world (Eldoret, Kenya) and I have learnt a lot from your channel on working with limited resources. I want to say a big thank you to you for all the time and hard work you have put in thus far to helping other aspiring filmmakers and it's not been in vain. All the best on your next project whenever you are ready to undertake it.

Sad to hear this Scott, hang in there! Man, I know a bit about this. Quite a while ago now, I had a blog (KZbin channels weren't much of a thing back then) which I basically posted (mostly reposts, but always with a personal touch) a minimum of 6 posts a day. All days, no exceptions. No weekends, no holidays, no sick days... I always posted, initially a couple of posts, and by the end of it 6 posts a day. I wasn't getting money from it, I spent a whole lot of time and my own money on it, and I never got a following. I had a considerable ammount of access coming from Google search itself because the topics were somewhat unique I guess (and I followed some principles of SEO that were more relevant those days), but not enough to pay me anything. I think I got some hundred bucks check from Google Ads for something like 3 years of this crazy routine, and I actually never managed to cash it in because I'm in Brazil and the whole thing got lost because banks didn't knew the procedure for me to do it. In any case, 100 bucks for something that I spent a good part of the day at everyday and far more money on hosting and domain upkeep, kind of a joke. :P Anyways, I ended giving up because I started a post graduation course, and then went for a completely new graduation course after that... couldn't keep the routine and study properly at the same time. But mostly, because I was burnt out. It was never meant to be a serious thing tbh... I started as an experiment to see how far it could go, and for how long I could keep it going, but I wasn't hoping to make a living of it. An older version of the blog is still there actually... I'm still paying for the domain after all these years for some reason I frankly cannot rationalize. xspblog.com/ Reminder perhaps, and a statement of all the hard work and crazy routine I managed to pull back then. Most of the content isn't there though (I have some on backup, but no easy way of restoring it), at least a full year of daily posts... a whole string of failures - backup failures, HDD failures, problems with migration from free to paid hosting, problems with Wordpress upgrade procedures, some hack attempts, some plugins that conflicted with new versions of Wordpress and killed the blog altogether. Man, it was really hell. The freaking upkeep of a Wordpress website is no joke if you are trying to stretch it's functionalities... well, at least back then, I know the platform improved a lot over the years. And I know the pain of trying to come back. It's been over a decade now and I made, remade, trashed, remade once again all these plans of coming back to it in some form or shape, but still didn't do it, still can't decide how. Initially, I couldn't do it because I was burnt out. Still think I am a bit traumatized, but nowadays it's just because I got into a different routine that does not include blogging... and changing routines can be pretty rough. Not very encouraging I guess, but just to let you know Scott, I'd enjoy your channel plenty, even for more mundane stuff.... tips, daily musings, some thoughts on news, stuff like that. No need for overly produced content, though I really do understand your point of view on projects really being the core that enabled you to come up with content in the first place. I do hope you find the way once again, it'll be a pleasure to continue following your work!

I can totally relate! But one shred of advice I have is keep a notebook for all your ideas while you do all the hustle and "paid" gigs. The notebook is your inspiration. I would read through all my ideas that I had in a month and it would inspire me to do new work and even improve my paid work gigs. Also, keep hustling. One idea to inspire your community is having screenings of films or start a small film festival. Start super small, super manageable and year after year it'll grow and so will the community. Run workshops eventually to help people discover a new hobby, in return you might have a crew at your disposal: them for you and you for them. Anywho stay positive. I went thru a huge depression spell about the industry/my creativity after an amazing experience working and hanging out with people in filmmaking for a long stretch of time. But now I know that the suffering I went through helped me launch myself to some great projects and Ideas for 2017. So stay healthy, take care of your family and looking forward to what you have next.

I'm going through through the exact same thing. I went from making 4 videos a week, every week, to struggling to get out one or two. Part of it is more work. Part of it is that the kids were home during the day and since they've been back at school (over a week now), I've only had one day to work on videos. Don't beat yourself up, just keep at it. You've been missed and you'll get out of the funk, but sometimes you have to behave your way to success. I don't want to get in front of the camera until I do it. I don't want to write until I do it. I just need to remind myself of that and keep going.

Scott, I feel for you because I've gone through the same thing. I found just taking the camera going out and shooting interesting things, locations and people doing things gave me enough interesting material to edit and get my juices flowing again. I've found stories in the people and locations I never thought were there. If you do something similar, you might be surprised at the amount of fresh material you can mine from your current location. NOBODY has what you have right now. Use that in a positive way and show us the great filmmaker we all know you are. (you just need to find it in yourself again)

Motivation gets us started, Dedication keeps us moving, but only Determination will see us through to our goals! Don't forget, a couple of us out here only came by for that one tip, that one trick, that one build - or even just the idea of it. You are already successful, because you influenced a lot of folks out there who needed to find an answer to an issue. I appreciate your efforts. Do what must be done to keep yourself and your family financially viable, and the ideas will come... and you will help even more of us out with that tip, trick, idea - and when we look, and find your video on the subject, we will appreciate that as much as we did the first time! Best wishes for much success, always!

Thanks for another excellent video. You're sharing real life issues that many creators face. As you note, habits are important. You have a unique advantage. You have a question and answer format. As long as the questions keep coming, you have ideas for new videos. You're also connected to people outside your physical location. Both are precious. You might want to continue with the Q&A to maintain a routine.

We had wondered how you would fare in a small remote place like that, and always wished that you folks would have gone to one of the "bigger" city's / towns up there where there would be more opportunity. But we are sure it will work out for ya! As a pro drummer of 40+ years one day I just said enough and walked away from it. Burned out, bored, any of the 1000 reasons that it could have happened for did not matter, it just did. 12 years later I am getting back into it with the energy I had when I started....well, almost, but ya get the drift... It is just good to see you back out here, and hope that things start working for ya, no matter what way life takes you!

If you're out of ideas, there's some filmmaker on KZbin that has a Short Film Idea Deck that may give you some inspirational ideas. I guess he still has it for sale. Just go to thefrugalfilmmaker's main page and search for it. It's a really cool idea that will help get those creative juices flowing again. If the slump has anything to do with living in the vast tundra of Alaska, put that to your advantage. Make a short film about an Eskimo heroine who fights the evil snowmen. (Yeah, I know that was really stupid.) Or an extraterrestrial UFO base about to be exposed by the melting ice and the government sends a hot pistol-packing female scientist/alien killer to look into it. Once you take your first step, things will begin to come to you. 'And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.' ... Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

I have always enjoyed the content on your channel. I think most of us that go the extra mile in terms of projects at some point get very tired of the same routine and when something in life stops our momentum it is very difficult to get started again with the same enthusiasm. I have found that if you keep going even very slowly in a similar direction that eventually more days become inspiring than not and eventually you get some small momentum again. You seem like a very good person and that is what we like so please do not give up. We will still watch whatever you feel like showing and telling us. You are the only person that presents material the way you do. Perhaps you do not realize how special you really are to us.

I reckon the ripples that have come from this channel in terms of creative spark, approach and utility will be hard to gauge, but they'll undoubtedly be responsible in part to a large number of waves of success in other people's lives- be it simply demystifying the technology of making a film, the means to craete their own tools, direction toward the right type of tools, the breaking down of the creative process and the practical techniques to make a vision come together etc etc. All gold. Hang in there. I lived in Alaska for a while and found that the combination of the high cost of living, which require a lot of work hours, the lack of a lot of infrastructure-type things that one takes for granted, among them, really slow internet in my case, and the lack of a vibrant tech community where I was, to be a constant source of frustration, irritation, and a constant drain on my creative energy. The only way I found to deal with it was just to keep slogging through.

ROI. Doing something you really enjoy and are good at. Doing something that excites you. Getting through the current creative cobwebs or changing direction... always an interesting proposition. I think, and just guessing here, some of the DSLR revolution has passed, but that's a good thing. Cameras are SO good now that T5i / 1.8 50mm footage can, and has been, cut into 5DMKIII / L lens footage without too much of a hiccup and not even noticed by most when watching the end product. I guess I'm saying stuff changes and we change along with it, or not. I watch this channel for the way you've taught as much as for the specifics of what you teach and show. Keep going or reinvent... that's the exciting revolution... for all of us. We'll be watching :)

Whip out the googly eyes!! Create a deck for the show! (Love the Writer emergency pack). We missed you. You know if you just take and extra camera with you on the paying gig, and set up to record with a wide angle. That's a show right there.

Resources---Actors probably---right? Try teaching an acting class--that worked for me--like 10 years ago I was having trouble finding actors, so someone recommended teaching an acting class. I promoted it as "Learn Acting from a Director." it worked. I still have actors from that class that I call on from time to time. I did a 4 session class for free--we met once week it took a month. But it was really great!!!

I totally get it. I used to be so driven as a kid to get where I wanted to be. Sacrificed quite a bit to get there. And once I was there... I kinda lost my drive to achieve/get new things done. This fueled by an environment that's not really sparking anything with me, I've just become complacent and in turn have become stagnant and perhaps even lazy ('what for anyways? That seems like a lot of effort, pfff'). I think at the moment I'm a snowball trying to get up hill here. I think what would be good for me is a change of scenery for that snowball to get some momentum again in the other direction. I need to find that drive to explore my other passions and do new things. I hope you'll find yours too!

Too bad you aren't in Washington State. You're close to my neck of the woods, but then again, we don't hear of much coming out of Alaska.... probably for good reason. But yeah, I've hit a creative block here in Washington too with being unable to find reliable help on projects. I live about an hour outside of Portland, OR, and since I'm not able to travel that far due to financial limitations, getting help there hasn't worked out for me too well either. I wish I could help another filmmaker on his or her project, but for whatever reason, there just seems to be this mental wall we all have where we fail to communicate. I know I personally lost my steam to do films or small projects when my preferred film festival spot stopped its hosting a couple years ago. I'll say this, and keep my word.... If you're ever in the Southwest part of Washington, I'd be happy to help you bring an idea to light. I too know what it feels like to be let down by others, and if I can change that for one person, I'll do what I can.

This is the cool part of the "B Team" where they seem down and out. Then you come up with a great plan and build cool weapons out of PVC pipe, duct tape, and take down the antagonist (in this case, burnout guy). Finally, "hero angle" as you Mr. T - style throw him on a pile of conveniently waiting breakaway crates. "I love it when a plan comes together."

Hate to say it, but I knew this was gonna happen. Alaska SUCKS for filmmaking & I knew you were going to run into a problem building a community & gaining support out there. I discovered this myself when I lived in a rural section of Washington State, so I feel your pain. Just know this Scott; you are personally responsible for teaching & molding a new generation of filmmakers, including myself. For this, your online filmmaking community thanks you and is forever in your debt.

Thanks for the video. The biggest source of motivation is being around other creatives. Cross discipline doesn't matter. Could be jewelry makers, could be a blacksmith, it doesn't matter. Look for a Makershop, Makerspace or similar in your area. They are cultural centers for creatives. Don't have one in your area, start one.

A bit late in commenting. But íve been following you for years. I've learnt so much from youre videos and dangit; i've had these creative coma's - or fallouts, as i call 'em - myself so many times in the five years that i'm active. Dude, take you're time and get creative again by stepping away from the KZbin weekly roster. Do things you actually want to do. KZbin is somehow an addication for creators. To be the first, to get the views, subs or whatever addiction that comes with this place. I tend to step away from time to time to refuel myself for new, fresh content. No shame in that; as creator, i feel you. Take you're time and take care!

Best thing I would suggest is if there's no current filmmaking thing in your area you may have to throw your hat into the ring and get the local community involved. Take advantage of your local environment you, create a story using whats around you :) Hope it helps -Anton

Hey Scott unless this is a needed income for you then I wouldn't sweat it. Just do a video a month maybe. The trouble is that the Film making boom that came along with the DSLR revolution suddenly spurred the need for DIY options on equipment, but now there's a lot of affordable equipment out there. I'd rather see you make videos off the back of doing something that you love, rather than doing it for some feeling of obligation to your audience.

I doubt this is generating any significant revenue which, I am sure, compounds the problems in finding the motivation to keep going. The numbers listed on SocialBlade for TheFrugalFilmMaker say he is making, at most, beer money from ad revenu and Socialblade has a tendency to be over optimistic in it's estimation of revenu generation.

Not boring at all and I do understand the feeling of just not having the energy to get started on something new. My family is not very supportive so when I whip out a green screen or set up lights I get eye rolls and remarks making me feel uncomfortable. I have been thinking of taking my videos outside. Actually you might benefit from going outside too. Go scout resources and locations. There are people in the film industry that want to shoot in Alaska. Maybe you can build a resource list of what you have there and tell other filmmakers about it. You could bring the film industry to you. You can be that guy who everybody refers to when they need that wilderness or snow location for their movie.

Scott. I figured you'd be doing videos showing what your Alaskan town is like? I've been waiting for some since you did a video way back last winter. Even if it's not a scripted film. So what? You have enough fans that they I'm sure they wanna see what the people are like in your town. I know I do. What do people do for a living? How do they relax? What's the local cuisine like? What's it like in the summer? Etc, etc.
