@@0vern9K oh but it was a terrible slur even in the 90s and it is very offensive. Saying the lgbtq community hasn’t been through as bad as African Americans is simply not true. They have similar stories and have been treated badly for a very long time. Just because you think the word isn’t as bad doesn’t mean that’s true. It’s still associated with a long history of hate. Ever since medieval times, and possibly forever, gay/trans/queer people existed and were tortured and killed. History differences shouldn’t justify saying a slur isn’t “that bad” as it is still hateful and offensive. I (as a bi man) feel like most of rap is just posturing and posing. I have a sneaking suspicion that most artists aren't the trappers and murderers they claim to be, but they're all putting on a show. I don't see why a gay or bi or pan or trans or whatever person wouldn't be able to do that too. While yes, homophobia is ingrained in the system, many artists outside of said system (Tyler and Frank, for instance, and I know Frank isn't a rapper but his fans are all in that general mediasphere) have still seen crazy success.

Definitely, if it's publicly announced, to certain extent marketed towards a certain audience, it's okay to assume it's exaggerated or enhanced to appeal. Although cases can always be individual. Not every queer person is built the same way. Not every queer person will be eloquent, extroverted and or charismatic enough to paint their internal image well for everyone who might pull their eyes into their work, therefore; not everyone will make an impression that matters in media. When someone outs themselves (And I don't find the term outing to be nice at all, just like how Tyler expresses... "why does it matter?". People often feel entitled to knowing those details they might be morbidly interested in) there is risk, inherently social spaces have variety of opinions on anything. But when somebody already worked on that first impression with their art, before their identity and s**uality come out, I would say has a better chance of having a better outcome. I'm not sure if you have seen it happen in real-time, but when someone represents themselves transparently from the beginning, there might be lots of discouragement, as well as rejection. Leading to nobody wanting to look back at them again. If they held their life details (and this can be about anything that's not commonly talked about openly), could be better.. but sometimes with queer folks, it draws the attention of bad actors. Those who might see "feminine persona.. but masculine looks.. bad", draw their conclussions and try to get people on board with the negative impression they made to themselves. It's definitely not something just about anybody gives themselves the luxury to do at least online. Although, in the right places; it's nice to finally be able to portray yourself as you see yourself from inside. That's one part of the beauty in art.

Also a big issue with the queer black community is their lack of general well-off representation in media. The only queer black character I can think of is Omar from The Wire but his homosexuality was used as a negative plot device instead of being let hang loose as a part of his character instead of a bargaining chip by which he lost his lover, shoots people, etc. The homosexuality card is played negatively there. If there was more black queer representation through subtlety, the problem would be closer to fixing (though most of my black friends are either pan or zesty as hell).

What's tough about this topic is that it seemingly has to be either one thing or another, but in reality it's both. Hip Hop is about the real, drill is a drill, trap is a place people really go, so is the down low. But guys like Boosie, I don't understand why the mainstream is casting spurs either. Whether you've been to the zoo, or the catholic church, not every expression of any sexuality is pure. Some of these men have trauma from witnessing a form that is more about control, power and even force (I'm talking about the zoo), I just don't like seeing people getting left behind due to something as valid as trauma. Because of the line of work that some of my roommates are in, I have to keep a lot of secrets for my entire region, I feel for these men, even the ones who present as homophobes, that is, until we address what is really going on with men who see incarceration. The genre itself used to tie in credibility to these same lived experiences, and yet we want to push the conclusion under the rug. Sexuality is good and bad, it is a source of love and healing, it can also be a weapon. Victims are still victims, even if they go on to do and say bad things. Pray for Boosie.

I feel like queer people should not try to be in hip hop spaces because the toxicity is just too much. I've heard that for some of the younger generation of black music listeners hip hop as a genre appeals to them less and less due to the homophobia, transphobia, and other phobias explicitly baked into the lyricism of so many classic albums. I feel like for their own self preservation queer black artists's should go where they're fully celebrated and appreciated. To be frank the hip hop community especially in the mainstream is just not ready for it and I'm not sure if they'll ever be because playing into extremely binary gender stereotypes is a huge part of the history especially in regards to men,. Taking into account how genre boxes mean less and less to younger people in a post Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Lil Wayne world I think many young queer black artists will blend their hip hop music with other genres naturally. And it will help them avoid the specific toxicity they would get just being a strictly hip hop artist.

Really excellent exploration of this topic! I appreciate the makeup and I'm looking forward to part 2! Another thought I had during this video is about gay rap lyrics. Of course in hip hop, misogyny that degrades women is prevalent. But if a hypothetical gay rapper writes bars degrading the men who are their sexual conquests, would that be just as bad? Or would that be some sort of progressive? I'm really curious to hear if anyone has thoughts on this.

@@lordmew5 - None. There are countless conspiracies that there is secret gay agenda in hip hop and Hollywood and that rappers/celebrities from old and new get into the industry by doing gay stuff or allegedly being in the closet, and rappers nowadays dressing feminine are further pushing said agenda. They're worried about how it's emasculating black men into being less manly/fruity or whatever. Usually this coincides with the Illuminati nonsense. Problem with the idealized differences in modern hip hop and rap is that the roots of hip hop were actually utilized by black panther party who literally would have lyrics talking about k1lling trans and gay people, which became the norm in the scene because a lot of artists were hardcore christians/muslims. And that only got worse in the 90s, when eminem added that into his repertoire and that went more mainstream, which makes it more complicated because bizarre would talk about f+-cking transvestites (The Underworld, Reel Wolf) and that's D12. So realistically hip hop is very slowly making a subgenre, not sure if its Queer Rap since that'd actually be more of an insult in the scene, more like LGBT-Hop, which would actually include lgbt artists who have their own scene in it. Personally seeing a dude who replicates HIZAKI (japanese guitarist guy, really skilled, but he totally looks like a chick) but in the rap scene with that attitude would be a change of pace but it's one of those things that I don't think the culture would totally want because of the aforementioned points. If you listen to modern rap, they STILL use jargon that's discriminatory in 2024.

Just remembered not so long ago I joined a "Hip Hop" (it was far from Hip Hop, but still within it's subgenres to be fair) discord server, that seemed friendly and alright. That same day, I found some people in on of their voice channels, using FL Studio, just messing around with sounds. Had a moderator and admin in there casually, and after some 30-ish minutes, they moved out of FL Studio and went on Hinge (okay, don't ask me why, but they were screensharing going through girls on Hinge XD, maybe to do with the whole masculinity shtick.. just especulation honestly), another person in there did the same, who coincidentially lived near the other person on Hinge. That dude goes "HEY DUDE, be careful, there's a dude pretending to be a woman in the area" "idk why these monsters get on these apps", and ofc as a queer folk i was like "Excuse me what did you just said?". Dude couldn't even back it up, and doubled down saying just nasty stuff. Both the admin and moderator were just laughing, commenting just as gross. Just to later get told "Yes, we are all kinds of phobic in this server, what were you expecting? It's a hiphop server". All to say; it went through my mind "Is it really?" (Just for the sake of it, it was actually not the only kind of phobic they were, will leave it at that) The genre doesn't define the artist, the artist defines their own representation of it.

I know you explained why, but i personally just don't like combining gay with queer. I could imagine a hyper masculinized male who is gay and uses that in a somewhat domineering way to be able to carve out a specialized niche. I don't see an openly queer person being able to do that.
@FatCharlie2152 ай бұрын
meh, you'll be ok.
@pansieisawesome2 ай бұрын
I think in this case he was using queer to mean any man who isn't straight, not necessarily one who breaks a lot of masculine gender norms. Queer would be a way of grouping gay, bi fluid+ etc. men (and people)

So in kamikaze the Eminem album around 2018 everyone was looking down on Eminem for saying anti gay stuff about Tyler. But now that the trans community has gotten larger I now see homophobia renter normalization. It’s like people like Tyler almost got us to change but now pro trumpers and the anti woke wokeness are like variants of old prejudice. It doesn’t help lil nas X but anti christ shit now Tyler is the only gay man not part of that agenda. It’s just a bunch of bs at the end of the day but I felt we almost became more sensitive but then reverted as a culture to our identities

the term, "gay" is another term white people forced on an entire community w/o everyone's buy-in. white people went/go around the world renaming people, places and things that the indigenous people already named. mt everest is a prime ex. the mountain's original name is Sargamartha. when everest climbed the mountain he needed the help of the people of Nepal to climb it. w/o their help the british guy would have never been able to climb the mountain. after he climbed Sargamartha it was renamed Mt. Everest because it is said that everest was the 1st person to climb it. so sad.

Hey, thanks again sir. Listening to the Internet, Syd be sangin. "I tried". Music is such a great mode of expression. Real talk, I was working for someone earlier, radio said "take me to church..." Dude said, "that's a beautiful song, who sings it?" My response" Sam Smith, I think he was talking about his lover.. he's homosexual, but apply it as you will if it's good music." Peace yo.(basically what happens in the personal space doesn't bother people not involved. Thanks again, I feel accepted. You took my joke, rocked it like a baby and honestly.... just blessings, life been kinda kicking my ass some.)
