I've helped coach my daughter's 12u and 14u teams the last three years. I've been an assistant, not the head coach. Trying to push the narrative of accountability, discipline, effort ... it's been beyond frustrating and futile. Softball is my daughter's sport so when it's her giving it her all and the other 9 bumblefooting and providing error after error while she pitches, is beyond demoralizing to see. She gives it her all and the rest love volleyball or track. Others do try, on the team, but, like you mentioned, it's just not their main school activity or sport, so they don't put in extra time. Plus, when you only practice 90 minutes a week, you can't build up a necessary skillset so be successful in anything. Thank you for posting this. My daughter will be literally beyond thrilled to see & hear this from someone other than me or her softball teacher at SZS.

Every athlete, coach, and parents should watch this. As a coach, this helps me to put together the words I wanted to tell my athletes for a while. Amazing, thank you for this video

Amen Coach. I feel like 20 years ago there was much more tough love given than nowadays in youth sports. Not sure what happened but we need more coaches like that.

We are so afraid of hurting feelings but we can still be tough while being encouraging and positive! It only makes them better humans in the long run.

This is great. My niece started playing travel team again. I have been helping her practice for almost 10 years. I realized some coaches know softball well but lack the skills to deliver and discipline the team. Team sports during the teenage years provide a great experience and teaching lesson on how to work together to achieve the same goal. Thank you for this video!!!

100%! It’s more than just softball. It’s life lessons that will take them so much further than softball.

We truly need to get on this way of thinking. We need to get away from the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality. I’ve coached for many years and you’re one of the very few of your generation that gets it. I use a lot of your videos because you incorporate old school techniques with today’s training style. Thank you coach. Keep up the great work

Thanks for a great video, I'm stealing the first part to use next time I speak with my team. I'm a "just a dad" coach and struggle with the kids who aren't trying. I'm much better with the baseball side of things vs human side. A followup video on how you run practices would be awesome.

Thank you! I actually created practice plans that took me about a year to create because the demand was so high. You get 10 8u, 10 10u and 10 12u practice plans, so 30 in total. There are 2-3 second videos next to the drill and you get access to my drill library if you ever want to swap out drills.

Let’s include school administrators in this discussion. We’ve entered a culture where school administrators hire a coach to run their program, claim they have autonomy, but the first call they get from a parent complaining that Suzy or Tommy was benched, they chastise and reprimand the coach. Administration need to support their coach’s philosophy, management style and methods for discipline. Administrators need to tell these entitled parents that they support their coaches decisions, unless of course they are demonstrating unethical or offensive behavior.

Travel ball is the problem. Parents paying for the team make them think they get to tell the coach what to do. It has ruined baseball and softball.

At five years old, this is when they need too learn the basics, hustle, respect, and more importantly that they don’t get a trophy just for being on a team. Teach them young so when they get to be 10 they are tuned up.
