Want insider info about where to buy a classic Porsche 911? Here are 12 specific places where you'll find well-loved air cooled Porsche 911's for sale.
I think we can all agree that what we are really trying to do when evaluating where to buy a Classic Porsche 911 is figure out how to get the best example for the best price.
The problem with figuring out where to buy a classic Porsche is that it’s solidly a seller’s market, prices are sky high and the money these cars are bringing sub-par examples out of the garage to be marketed as ideal cars for unsuspecting buyers.
So, in response to many individual messages I've received from viewers, along with what I've learned from my personal experience - both good and bad - in buying air cooled Porsches, I decided to put together this video to help you navigate the places where you'll find these cars for sale. After successfully and unsuccessfully searching for choice examples, I've figured out at least some of the best places to find good cars and I share that knowledge in this video.
I’ll talk about the Classic Porsche 911 prices, why I personally prefer working with private sellers and then I share EXACTLY where to buy a Classic Porsche 911…including giving you links to different sources along with the good - and the bad - about each source.

Earned a new sub with this one. Your entire channel is pure gold. I’ve been searching for a clean 993 coupe for over 6 months now. But I’ve kept to over-inflated auction houses and pca/rennlist classifieds. I will reach out to my local community to see if I can pry one out of the hands of a loving owner 😂

I bought a 1987 911 g50 in April of 2020 in Oakland California off Craigslist!!!!! The car had 176k miles. Full engine rebuild, high lift cams, Steve wong chip dansk exhaust, fab speed cat bypass with original paint, interior and Fuchs wheels. Found the car on Craigslist and paid $31k. Haven’t had an issue yet. Drove from San Diego to Chicago without a hick up!!! Couldn’t be happier!!! Craigslist did me good!!! The seller called me a few months ago asking if I would sell it back to him. I said no way too in love!!!

Bought my 89 2 years ago from a small independent dealership in Vegas . Owned by a mechanic at the shop …….he heard me talking to the owner of the shop and volunteered he had an air cooled 89 911 cabriolet with a complete documented engine, 5 speed tranny rebuild. Also, had a new cabriolet top ……no accidents original paint interior..all work was documented and photographed and included in the purchase. $16,000 plus in parts . Owner of the shop verified the work was done in the shop after hours over a period of time. Now the down side …..after market chrome wheels and 170,000 miles on the car gave me concern . I test drove the car all around Vegas and it went flawlessly. Paid $40 k and wife drove it from Vegas to Polson Montana for a few weeks of enjoying the scenic area then home to wenatchee Washington…….mechanic told her car is meant to drive hard …… what a mistake , she hit 114 mph and over 100 mph several times. Love the car changed the wheels and went back to Fuchs ……feel very lucky on a high mileage but newly done 911. Great car very happy

I bought a 1968 911, from my elderly neighbor. He sold it to me, at a low price, he told me he wanted to pass it on to the next generation. He's been my neighbor for about 2 decades. I was always curious about his car, I liked it because it was small and cute, didn't know that it was a Porsche 911 way back then. I came home, to visit my family, and bought it from him, after he told me he wanted to sell it, to someone who'll actually use it. It has 186K kilometres on it, so it has be enjoyed. Look forward to putting more kilometres on it!❤

Grateful for this video! I am starting my Porsche journey right here on this comment section, and here is why. When I got my first classic mercedes two years ago, I commented on a video of a fellow owner here in youtube, and that developed in having a great group of mercedes friends here in LA, so I am doing now the same, with Porsche :). I am planing to buy a 911 in the next year, so I am starting to get knowledgeable. Hopefully I find more Porsche friends here in LA! thanks for the video!

Great video Will - well thought out, good information and well conveyed (+ great B roll footage). To respond to your prompt - I don’t think air cooled prices will come down any time soon - as time has gone on, these cars have become more widely understood and appreciated. I fully agree that an independent Porsche mechanic is the best source to find a car for sale or future sale. My mechanic has hundreds of Porsche clients, he knows his clients and - of great value - he knows the cars (the good and the bad). I had a great experience buying my ‘90 964 through PCA classifieds. In 2010, when I bought the car, the market was not as hot as it is today. I investigated several cars before deciding on the one I purchased. All of the owners and I spoke the same language (Porsche) - it was a wholly positive experience. I offered the owner of the car I bought the price he asked - it was a fair price for the (well maintained) car and he was very responsive in answering my questions and forwarding copies of maintenance receipts. Buying a Porsche is no cheap venture. For that kind of an investment, I’m more interested in paying what a car is worth and buying a well maintained / loved car, than I am in bargain hunting for a car that someone doesn’t understand or hasn’t maintained with love & respect.

I agree with not trying to 'cheap out' just to get a good deal you can brag about. I overpaid for my 997 C2 by about 4k, but could not be happier with this great car. I could justify the premium price as it was a 1 owner car and the guy had clearly taken great care of it. Sure, could have spent less but that can be a quite risky roll of the dice!

I’ve found both of my cars via PCA classifieds. In both cases, owners were enthusiasts. Like you, have kept in touch with both of them. Like everything else, these quality relationships will lead you to other high quality leads. The other side of dealing with enthusiasts is they may think their car is worth more than it’s worth depending upon what they have done with the car.

Will, I agree nearly 100% with your prioritized list. I would only add, to reinforce your point, if you want access to the best cared for 911's where you will have access to all, or nearly all, of its history, you need to develop relationships with other owners and local air-cooled 911 mechanics. I have found (unfortunately after I bought my SC) that my local PCA chapter get-togethers and my local mechanic are excellent sources for some great cars. When/if I buy my next air cooled 911, this is the route I will go. There is nearly no substitute for the value of other Pcar enthusiasts and accessing their network of other air cooled 911 owners. Get out of the house, off the computer and get to know other people! Great episode and tips Will. Keep up the great work!

With the advent of higher prices we have entered into what I call the ‘Duesenberg’ phase where the curation aspect becomes a more salient factor in how these cars are traded, driven and maintained. For better or worse, and I happen to think for the better, it will require more long term investment and commitment on an owners part to enjoy one of these automobiles. Upgrades will occur more often and in ten years it will be hard to find many beater versions but the extant examples will still be daily drivers albeit expensive ones and the focus will shift to conserving as many as possible for the future.

Some may disagree, but I think it’s worth paying even slightly over market for the type of car you own. Paying up for peace of mind and the “positive vibes” of owning a well loved example and knowing the story vs paying fair market for a car without knowing the history and finding nasty surprises? It’s a no-brainer for me.

I bought mine of a private flipper who also owns a dealership and modifies cars for a living. I obviously paid way too much for my 88' Porsche 964 (yes, October 1988, one of the very very first ones) because it had A LOT of obvious faults and flaws and I ended up finding out that the engine needs to be rebuilt, which the previous owner either wasn't aware of, or probably more so hid it from me... I got scammed, and payed WAY too much but I still love this thing and wouldn't want to live without it, even though I didn't even got the chance to properly drive it since my purchase in October 2022. I document my journey with it on my channel if anybody wants to hop by and find out more about it. Greetings from Luxembourg, Alex

the 911 is the poor man's 928. the 928 won two Bonneville Salt Flats fasted production land car (1986 and 2020). the 928 is the only sports car to win European Car of the Year. the 928 is the biggest bang for the buck in exotic sports/poster cars as well as the entire Porsche classic car line up. Even Magnus Walker is quietly building his 928 collection. the 964 is 40/60 weighth distribution and fish tails - not the 50/50 weight distrubted 928. While a grand tourer, the mid/high torque 928 is a more complete car as the 911 doesn't has less horsepower than the 928 and even today, classic porsche enthusiasts do not value off the line speed even for the 911. and Porsche made a tenth of 928s than they made 911s. No disrepect - just calling balls and strikes. Its now or never for the 928.

How many of you use their classic Porsche as a daily driver? I am a 996 enthusiast and know its well documented history and have the urge to buy one. Their isn't room at our home for three cars so the one that I might buy will be my only car.

I've reached out to local mechanics but how do you get into Porsche community without owning yourself?

PCA has a test drive membership that will allow you to communicate with sellers on their classifieds page. Not sure if that would get you into events but I would be shocked if you weren’t allowed to attend and network with an eye toward eventually purchasing. They are interested in expanding their membership so I don’t see them excluding you.

A word of caution about Bringatrailer...while you can certainly find some unique cars on that site, be prepared to pay a huge premium for them. Over the last few months I have seen what appear to be more uneducated buyers stepping in to buy not only air cooled but water cooled 911s for what appears to be more of an investment than love of the cars. With that, bidding wars are quite common and cars will get bid up 20-40% over what their true value is. In addition, there is a cadre of "cheerleaders" that spend a great deal of time posting overly exuberant comments that can prompt uneducated buyers to spend more than they ordinarily would to purchase a car. With these auctions, they typically last 7 days, and while most sellers are responsive to questions, buyers just do not have enough time to do what would otherwise be proper due diligence (like a PPI) before the auction ends...so you are what can be a significant risk buying on BaT or PCM. Lastly, dealers (and some private sellers) will use auction results to justify the prices they are asking for the car(s) they are selling. Do your homework and make sure you are not overpaying because a seller is using an auction where a car was bid up to a significant premium over what the current market actually is.

Bought and sold air cooled 911s on ebay without issue. Ebay is one of the least scammy with the free insurance you get on the purchase ( up to 100k if the car isnt what as described to you). Your friend going through the ebay process but then buying it outside of ebay is really a bad idea since you lose out on that free insurance.

Interesting. I didn’t know about the insurance as I had never really researched it for the reasons I shared. Thanks for commenting.

Yes I have heard some as well since posting this video. It’s too bad. In my opinion they have a ton of potential…but that can go away when the brand reputation isn’t good.

Yes, my buddy just sent me that. I need to go look more closely but I feel like the car got ripped up in the comments which never helps the value. These have been going for more so someone either just got lucky and got a good price or I’m guessing they’ll end up paying up in repairs snd will be into the car $-wise for market value.

Seriously...this video took 21 minutes only to get to "word of mouth" as the super place to buy a Porsche - are you kidding, this is like watching a captain obvious commercials. I like the guy...but wow, could have summed up this entire video in about 3 minutes.

I hear you, but I think the value of this video might be for the newer air cooled buyers who may be tempted to jump quickly on a dealer or who are just weighing different options for sourcing one of these cars. I’m urging them to play the long game. Thanks for commenting.

What you need to know is don't buy one. The 911 is the poor man's 928. Sorry - I gotta call balls and strikes. the 928 was European "Car" of the Year 1979. No other sports car including the 911 has ever won "Car" of the year. The 928 has won 2 production car land speed record at Bonneville (1986 and 2020) - the 911 has exactly won none. Even 911 enthusiast Magnus Walker has started his 928 collection - its Now or Never for the 928 still the biggest bang for the buck in classic Porsches. Singer/RWB/RUF could easily reimagine 928s - its just a matter of time before someone specializes in customizing and outlawing 928s - There is no substitute.
