As much as I love the Silence, I feel like bringing them back would not only undermine Time of the Doctor, but also Matt Smith's entire era. They were meant to show a war that the Eleventh Doctor was in, that he wasn't even aware of yet. Their story begins and ends at the same time as his. Bringing them back would just feel like they were robbing Matt Smith's entire era, and how much his arc is only about him. No Master, no Davros, Daleks only being in filler episodes because they need to legally, his era has that uniqueness to it. Don't bring the Silence back unless it is an Eleventh Doctor story, or if they're not villains at all and are only in the background of a place with a bunch of aliens (sort of like what the Ood are doing these days).

I think the writers need to remember that each series is a continuation of the show, not a remake or an adaptation, so I don't think there should be any obligation to bring monsters back. Plus, it makes the doctor who universe feel very small if you say that the Daleks, the Cybermen and the master are the most dangerous things in it.
@ErinTheFennec5 жыл бұрын
That's not necessarily true, we get a lot more new enemies than returning ones, and the ones that do return often have some reason to return, e.g. the Daleks try to invade as many places as possible anyway, the Cybermen can technically originate from anywhere as they aren't explicitly a species but more the result of a process that many species have done to themselves, the Zygons chose Earth as a good replacement for their homeworld which was destroyed etc. not to mention the fact that the TARDIS has a mind of its own, and often brings the Doctor to wherever something is happening.

Completely agree about Davros. I felt like Doctor Who could've finished with Capaldi with the amount of perfect conclusions he had. Davros, River, Clara etc, and tying it all back to the first Doctor made for a nice round off to his character.

What if, instead of Missy becoming a grandiose villain again, she regenerates as a Master who wants to do good - and always fails. Give her some tragedy, there's a million ways to do this. What if in order to save Silurians trapped in the ice age she converts them into Cybermen? What if she becomes president of Gallifrey and becomes trapped in their bureaucracy, unable to save the universe when she needs to? What if in a dark reflection of the original plan for Ace's character, she tries to bring up a companion to the level of Timelord, but THEY become the new Master, possibly even another friend/enemy of the doctor, or a short-lived companion like Adam? These stories would allow the character (or her successor!) to continue the traditional role while not breaking Missy's growth in its entirety. After all, she wasn't even a good Doctor when she tried.

I never really saw witch’s familiar as a sendoff for Davros. I didn’t like that the whole thing had, arguably, been a trap. If that was an ‘enemies but nice’ episode I think davros could still do with an ‘evil but friends’ one. Maybe they have to work together because of... some dangerous circumstances. Maybe Davros has to try to make the Daleks not kill the Doctor so they can all get out alive. Okay maybe that’s too much. But I’d like to see Davros in something that’s not a trick or a trap.
@chriszone505 жыл бұрын
Yes, at first it felt like a send-off but at the end, it was just a normal episode where it was a trap, the doctor foils Davros' evil plan and Davros is pissed and comes back with his next evil plan. It is obvious that Davros survived, the doctor just trashed his world a bit. It also wasn't a memorable episode so it definitely didn't feel like a send-off.

Your final question is very interesting because in some villains, yes, and in other villains, no. I think a villain like Sil could work in an era like now because his initial story was, in hindsight, ahead of its time on a thematic level, and he could be used at least once more. Though I feel that ship has passed since I think Twelve/Peter's Doctor would have had a better interaction than Jodie's. However, some villains like City Of Death's Scaroth just works for Tom Baker's era of late 70s tv sci-fi. He is just written in a Douglas Adamd sense of wit and charm and villainy, I don't think Chibnall could recreate that. I think it's quite smart to have Jodie face new villains more than classic villains since she is the newest and biggest change to the show's history. I definitely do not want Davros back, and I don't think we need the return of the Yeti or even new who monsters like the Vashta Nerada or Slitheen. They are their respective eras and with gimmicks that played their course without the need of of a new story to make them pale.

probably not reading these anymore, but I’d LOVE to see the master return one day similarly to how they did in season 10. If you’ve ever seen Scream of the Shalka then envision THAT scene. A monster busts through the TARDIS doors to see a classic, familiar looking Master recast in the role (I’d go with Derek Jacobi’s Time War incarnation pre-memory wipe personally because he’s a fantastic actor). You think at first that the master has stolen the TARDIS offscreen, slowly realising he holds all the cards only to brutally eject the villain into the time vortex. I’d love to see someone return to the Master’s season 10 themes with a different incarnation. Having now proven to himself that his oldest friend CAN change, the doctor might try to change another younger master, even knowing it’s hopeless in the end, just to have more time with his friend again. Idk, sounds both fan-wanky and emotionally compelling, I love it when Doctor Who can do both so why not. Edit: Basically, I wanna see the Doctor try to rehabilitate Derek Jacobi’s Master, knowing it’s pointless but doing it to show him a better life for a time. Should’ve said that from the start, idk what does anyone else think?

the only way I can picture the Master coming back without either being his old self, or missy 2, (or yana 2) is if they try to make him take the lessons he learned, and apply them to his own world view, like, and i hate the term, a anti hero, vigilante whatever, trying to save places but still taking lives, like the "throw bill into a volcano" thing she mentioned. oh and villians i never want to come back, count scagoth, not that he would, but, honestly, with the choices chibbs has made, i wouldnt put it past to think "oh everyone liked city of death, lets get ANOTHER scagaroth and do the same plot again"

Regarding as to where else they could take the character of the Master, what if the Master was thrown into a Doctor’s daughter situation where they’re suddenly stuck with a clone child that they inexplicably have parental feelings for? But rather than them just being stuck together for one story, they’re paired up for an entire spinoff show where the Master tries to teach this child all the wrong lessons as they go around trying to take over the universe. I’d imagine it being like Walter White and Jesse’s dynamic in breaking bad, where the Master is just being really emotionally manipulative and even straight up abusive at points, yet for reasons that they can’t fathom, the Master still has some kind of an emotional attachment to the clone that keeps them travelling together. It could be a great opportunity to dive into how the Master views the rest of the universe and what their purpose in life is. And then it can be taken further by having the Master finally taking over the universe, but at the cost of the clone’s physical or emotional wellbeing, and so the Master is left struggling to decide what they really want out of life.

With something like the entity from Midnight, I don't see why you'd ever bring them back anyways. Bringing back someone like Sutekh on the other hand would just not work. And the thing with the Master I feel like yeah they kind of completed an arc but I also feel like you can't do without them. Maybe use a past incarnation we don't know yet or introduce Macqueen into live action. But I think it would also be intriguing to have the Master try and do good but realising that they are terrible at it. Trying to save people from something and ultimately doing something to them that's much worse or something like that. I just feel like there's more that you can do with the character
@SamyulDavis5 жыл бұрын
The problem with the ‘bad at good’ approach is that it really makes him/her look incompetent, which versions prior to Missy already had issues with. I think it could also become comical if extended to another full arc. Having characters revert to previous states of character development is incredibly sitcom-like. It’s so cliched that you may as well go and give the villain amnesia.

I think there's still room for a Rassilon story. The only thing is that it would have to involve the Other. If you're willing to dive into the "the Doctor is a reincarnation of the Other" mythos (you don't have to do it with Looms!), there's a story waiting to be told about the Doctor, Rassilon and Omega finally *reconciling* over, or at least coming to terms with the grudges of, what happened so very long ago on a jungle planet called Gallifrey. Concerning the Master, what would be interesting would be for the Master to have turned good and travel by his/her own, trying to atone and to be like the Doctor, but still doing it in the quintessential Master "style". That is to say, lots of schemes and cackling - except when the Doctor learns of it and tries to bring the whole thing down on principle, she/he realizes it was all working towards an unambiguously good purpose.

The tragedy is that they CAN'T be a good person they will always stop themselves. Make them a villain again but focus on that tragedy, that they were almost a good person but fell at the last hurdle. Most new who Masters have been conflicted, torn between good and evil. This time have them firmly decided on evil, have them make their peace with that finally. Have the Master realise that they never change, they do the same things over and over so just embrace their nature. I also think the Master would be a good foil for Whitaker as she seems to value her friends if nothing else- what if her oldest friend was a villain again? How would she deal with that? Plus I think the show should really embrace the hypnotism again. Harry Potter and Jessica Jones have shown that being able to control people is quite a dark subject matter. I'd like to see him start a cult or something.
@Herosmurf5 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree, only because Missy actually does change in the end. It goes with the whole "Without hope, without witness, without reward" thing that Missy at the end does act virtuously. She was about to go back to help despite the fact that she would likely die, that no one witnessed her doing it, and that there was no reward. The Master tried to stop themselves from being a good person by killing Missy, but ultimately they die having redeemed themselves. Or at least, that's how I see it.
@Ben-vf5gk5 жыл бұрын
@@Herosmurf She does change yes but she doesn't get to do anything to redeem herself. Redemption is doing things to atone. In this case it would be going back to the Doctor, helping him ect. She decides she wants to be good but that's only the first step so the tragedy stems from she never really got a chance to be good in the end because her past nature won't let her. But it's very interpretable, Moffat left a lot of wiggle room with that scene.

I'd 100% love to see more Davros stories. Not, like, right now, but reestablish a Dalek empire, give them a kick ass emperor for a while. Then, in like a decade, Davros is back! Davros instead tries to reengineer the Kaleds, but he makes them Daleky. I can see possibilities for Rassilon, but it depends on the context of the Doctor's relationship with the Timelords at that point (which right now is, uh, nonexistent I guess?)

I personally think the weeping angels should definitely come back. They have been criminally misused as they have the capability to be a b list classic villains like the ice warriors of zygons. And like those monsters they have adaptable purposes that can always be used for small scale horror stories that doctor who desperately needs. I suppose new villains could be thought up for horror stories but I guarantee you none of them will have a design as iconic or recognisable as the weeping angels.

The only way you can bring back the Master is to bring back the War Master. We never saw enough of him and Big Finish isn’t enough. I don’t know, I can see him with Jodie. It’ll work. Though knowing Chibnall, it’ll either be a new Master or no Master. Or maybe you can go the Loki or Nebula route and have the Master be a full on anti-hero. I think the Master’s better suited to an anti hero rather than a villain anyway! As for Davros, The Witch’s Familar would have been a perfect ending had the episode not gone ‘whoops, he was tricking the Doctor all along! Lol!’ That kind of signifies that they’ll just go back to the status quo and since the Doctor was tricking Davros too, they didn’t really learn anything. They had the perfect opportunity to end Davros’ arc by having die full of regret but they missed it! So I think Moffat left things open ended. In fact, if I were to do a Davros story, I would have him reluctantly team up with the Doctor against a common foe (maybe a species who was mostly wiped out by the Time War). I don’t know, that could be a perfect opportunity to explore their relationship by having them be allies for once. And I’d love to see Sil come back! The satire of reality TV presented in Vengeance on Varos is more relevant now than ever and he is one of Who’s truly detestable villains.

There are a few villians that I do not want to see and some I wouldn't mind seeing but give it time. 1. The Master - Missy's run is done. We saw her die, if she suddenly gets another regeneration I will be annoyed. Nope dont want to see him in the 13th and 14th Doctors stories. 2. The Weeping Angels - The Angels got worse and worse. Blink they were terrifying. Flesh and Stone "the image of an angel becomes an angel." This is a stupid concept. Why? Angels of Manhatten... we all know the issue with this episode. The angels keep getting more and more powerful but their basic abilities in Blink were the perfect. Don't want to see them again. 3. "Big" Daleks (Cult of Skaro, Emperor, Davros, etc) - It seems almost every doctor in the revival encountered a big dalek. I don't mind dalek stories. The episode Dalek was an interesting look at a lone dalek while the episode Resolution went on the other end of the scale and made a lone dalek a bit overpowered. Lone Dalek stories would be nice but dont bring back any of the "big" daleks. 4. Cybermen. It seems after the Battle of Canary Wharf, the Cybermen just got worse and worse. They picked up in World Enough and Time but anything between those wer kinda... boring. 5. The Monks. The monk arc was interesting in the 12th Doctors story. but they feel like they have already done what they can. If I was to bring them back, I would have the doctor arrive on a world that has already been taken over by the monks and puts a stop to them but learns that the world was happy under the monks control. 6. Ice Warriors. Cold war was the only episode that should have had the Ice Warriors. Any appearance after that wasn't the best episode. Empress of Mars was ok but also eh. 7. Stenza. These creatures were mentioned a few times during Series 11 as these world conquering creatures. But they are just not interesting. Tim Shaw was fine as a lone character but dont bring any Stenza back. The Remnants were a more interesting creature than the Stenza. Give me an episode of flying rags.

Missy is done but the Master may not be. I'd agree don't bring Missy back but the Master still has a lot of potential as an enemy.

@@Ben-vf5gk The problem with the master was shown in this video. He is either a friend and not evil or not a friend and evil. The master needs something new. He seems to have only two personalities. Evil or Best Friend. Also the master needs to have great chemistry with the doctor. 12 and Missy were perfect. 10 and Saxon were alright. 8 and Slimy felt terrible. etc.

I'd go further: I don't want the Daleks back. In 2005, I thought for a large chunk of that first series, that they'd genuinely written out the Daleks, for whatever reason. I can't tell you how disappointed I felt when they came back.... Knowing that every other defeat after that would be given just another escape clause. That they'd never be vanquished, just endlessly defeated and diminished... and still return!

I don’t feel there is one off limits to return if the stories are good. The problem is we have a lot of average stories weakening the characters. Think weeping angels or even daleks. Only as good as their last story

I kind of want for Davros to return as I don't want that joke of an episode be the last time we see him (also I want Davros to have at least one good episode in new who). But you right in a sense that no writers could top Davros/I, Davros stories and writers of the modern show especially. Master WILL return at some point, it's inevitable. As great as Gomez was in Doctor Falls and those last scenes of her were awesome, but her redemprion arc came out of nowhere and future writers will either ignore it or fall on "well I tried, it didn't work" explanation (which is actually pretty dramatic in its own way). I just hope they won't try to replace Master with Rassilion from Hell Bent. New series should just leave him alone.

I do agree the Master needs a Break, but it’s the Master. As much as I would love to see The Rani or even the Valeyard return, the one old school Rival Timelord I’d bring back is The Monk. I loved the Monk in the audio plays and he’s in my favorite First Doctor Story, The Time Meddler. To me the Monk isn’t Evil, but just a selfish SOB. He can have Companions and even his own rogues gallery of Enemies. He’s everything the Doctor isn’t. The way I always described the Monk was like this, The Doctor will always side with Nelson Mandela and encourage him to rise up against the Apartheid. The Monk on the Other Hand would side with the Apartheid Government, not because he necessarily agrees with it, but because the Apartheid is a stable government, plus they promised him a very valuable leopard skin rug with gold teeth. Also, I wanna see how tacky the Leopard Print desktop theme would be for a TARDIS and I think The Monk would be the one to have it. To save money, they could have a line thrown in about how the Doctor sabotaged the Monk’s chameleon circuit during the War and it’s now stuck as something. I was thinking a red Glasgow police box again to save money. I know how much the Beebs loves doing that. Just paint an existing prop red. This could become a point of contention between the two cause maybe the Doctor was really hoping it would have been stuck as a Porto-John or something. Also, Rowan Atkinson or someone like that should play him.
@FlatCapWhovian18655 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree with your opinions here. Davros I honestly don't know what else they can do with him except maybe adapting the Big Finish story Terror Firma. Sutekh he'd be so hyped up after 40+ years that he'd never live up to our expectations so maybe he's best left for the comics and audios. However with the Master, I actually made a video a few months back where I discussed how I would bring back the character, as you suggest in the video we could always bring him back as a past, previously unseen incarnation. My idea probably isn't for everyone but check it out if you want, would love to hear your thoughts on the video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3-coXSgltqLqJo

If there's one monster I never want to see again, it would be the weeping angels, there's a very VERY finite amount of things to do with them, and I feel like they were relyed on way too much in the series. Also, is it just me, or is Sutekh sort of the DW equivalent of Darth Vader? The only way we should see the master again is with no new master Geoffrey beevers should reprise the role, crossing his own time stream after his death, he is a timelord after all and can travel in time and as we follow the doctor, the master can show up at any point With the 60th anniversary approaching this would be the best time to have him show up, after all a serious master is the most dangerous master of them all, the pain motivates him This would also be a great time to see Ace as a timelord academy graduate and leela return also seeing president romana, dream story, it makes more sense to see the return of companions over returning doctors, connect the series more And yes there are alot of monsters that need to stay in the past, however I feel the axons, krynoids, guardians, toymaker, fenric are all good to return maybe even the mara and the draconians(long overdue especially as earth teams up with them) But I'm going to say it now the rutans are long overdue for a return, how about an episode showing the origins of the rutans/sontaran war we'd get to see the original sontaran or how about a episode focusing on the war Or how about the doctor having to set in motion the events before awakening by going to raaga where the tereleptils and malus could be (tereleptils were mentioned in stonehenge) Some of these ideas could work well with the right writer I should add mortimus(the monk), omega or how about the eleven-twelve-thirteen (whichever I want to see them-they are equal to the doctor in so many ways)
