I'm a dog breeder of Great Pyrenees in California, and I love to share this video ❤ puppies need those omegas for brain development 🧠 EDIT- unfortunately I've been seeing a lot recently in the news about how the fish have extremely high levels of PFAS making it really hard to find non contaminated fish or even drinking water at this point the whole entire world is contaminated with PFAS, soil, water, air and food. Only clean blood was found in archives of soldiers who were not exposed to it yet.

They'd be fine as a treat, not really for food -those don't offer much nutrients. Remember to cook all shellfish to eliminate toxoplasma gondii infection. The chart I put in the video shows the risk factors (if any) of these as well.

Your videos have been so helpful!! I was wondering if I could freeze leftover organs after I’m done meal prepping and use them again for the next meal prep? I’m not sure if it’s safe to refreeze meat.

Yes, perfectly safe to refreeze and thaw. There will be minimal nutritional loss, and if you have a picky pet they may even be skeptical of a refrozen and thawed meat too, but that's really it. A way to avoid refreezing and thawing again would be to use silicon moulds or ice trays to portion out organ meat, freeze it once, then just easily remove them and put it in the prep containers so it's only thawed again when being fed!

I'm currently in the transition process to raw...still got a few things to get before I can make my first batch, but I got a better dry than the 9 Lives garbage I was feeding them which has no meat whatsoever in it, (it's what killed Morris!), that's for in the morning, then I feed them canned food in the evening...for breakfast, I've been putting a sardine on top of the kibble & they absolutely love them...only food that the little female, Nermal, will shove the little male out of the way for! I feed them in separate bowls, but she inhales her sardine so fast she's barely got time to taste it & then goes & shoves her face in the male's, Phoenix, bowl to see if he still has some left, but he's just as eager as she is & usually finishes it about the same time...

You say that herring and smelt contain thiaminase but you didn't say if sardines do so I googled it to be sure and it appears they do. I've been chopping up defrosted whole sardines when preparing a weeks meals so guess I'll be adding them when I add the pureed sunflower and pumpkin seeds and kefir. Thanks for all the the research you do, it's really helping to make the transition to raw much smoother.

Salmon poisoning also applies to trout, salmon and trout are related families so take the same precautions for trout as for salmon. Also, is the preference of wild caught over farmed salmon just because they are more natural or is there some nutritional benefit to wild caught?

Even in the 1980s we were feeding our Boxer dog pilchards and sardines tho he would have eaten any kind of fish or meat the atinkier the better for him, he was on a dry (high quality working dog type) and what would now be called raw diet. I think my granddad was feeding fish to his dogs way before that. We never used the commercial canned or popular brand dry food. Seems odd to me why everyone went to kibble only diets.

Hey! Just found your channel and I love it. Quick question, I catch quite a lot of fish for myself and in turn clean them. So I’m left with the organs which often get thrown away. Could I supplement (some of) my dogs secreting organs with, say... mackerel liver and heart? Obviously to the right portion size for her weight and activity level. You don't even have to cut the fish. Just give it as-is. Cat's jaws are made to chew up small animals like fish, and they might enjoy the fish for longer as well.

I fed my cat raw salmon for the first time ever today, and I wish I watched this first 😭😭😢😢 He loved it, but it was fresh, and now I’m super worried. I should have researched, before listening to friends. O•M•G I’m going to have a heart attack. I only gave him fresh, because he didn’t like the frozen I had bought, but I didn’t think about getting fresh, and then freezing. I hope I didn’t just make my baby sick. Sockeye salmon is the best for humans and the most highly reccomend for a keto diet. Not sure about dogs.

I know I probably won’t get an answer cause this video is so old, but trying just in case: why not feed farm-raised salmon? You never gave any specifics and I’m not having luck looking into it myself. While it’s only an idea, I was thinking that raising salmon in one’s backyard with the right set up would be better environmentally (less emissions from travel, not supporting fishing industry that pollutes hugely, etc) and would provide a good source of food for humans and pets. Do you think there would be issues with that in terms of raw feeding dogs and cats?

Fish are extremely sensitive and don't thrive crowded in farms. They have to treat them heavily with antibiotics antifungals etc. Farm-raised seafood is one of the worst food you could eat or feed.

This may be a dumb question, but; if my dog is showing signs of fish sensitivity or allergies, is shellfish still okay since it’s a whole different type of creature, or should I just stay away from all sea creatures? I tried canned mackerel (in water & no salt). Loose stool for a full day. I tried the fish formula from Just Food For Dogs (they use cod). Loose stool for three days. I won’t feed him that formula again because I DO think it messed him up. However, could it just be a coincidence since the mackerel was SO different a food protein and then that formula bothered him? The entire time he’s been with me (Nov ‘22) he was being given Vital Essentials freeze-dried raw fish as treats. He seemed fine until the mackerel.

I’ve come to terms that someone probably can’t come up with a 100% balanced diet with raw feeding but we can get close. There’s so many different raw portions I’ve seen fed; how do dogs thrive among the possible unbalanced feeding?

I may catch some flack for this, but dogs are resilient. Healthy animals aren’t going to suddenly stop thriving because their diet is a few percentage points off from their ideal intake of one nutrient or another. If you’re worried, I’d personally just mix it up. Extra organ meat one day, extra fish on another, less of both of those but some extra bone another day...if you’re feeding good foods in a variety, a healthy dog will be fine. I say dog because cats are different, their needs are more specific, and I’m less comfortable commenting on their needs.

this was so helpful. i'm looking to transition my 3yo scottish fold from only dry food to a mix of cheaper wet food+ziwi wet food+some raw food (unfortunately i don't know much yet nor do i have enough money to cut out cheap wet food completely) i was looking into maybe giving my cat a bit of unfrozen raw tuna today, but i see maybe it's not the best. i'm deff going to keep that fish graphic though!! and today i'll speak to the vet about this ♥️♥️♥️ if anyone has tips PLEASE let me know. is it ok to mix ziwi with cheaper "so called natural/grain free" wet food and some raw food? i can't do full ziwi or full raw because time/money. a lot of times i blame my cats gut sensitivity and laziness to his breed and personality, but maybe it's more related to drastic change of routine, lack of catification/experiences and nutrition!

@@PawsofPrey The salmon I feed is wild skin on boneless Alaskan fresh which I actually cook unlike their other foods because I was afraid of the parasites it could have. I was feeding it as the protein source for one meal a week. Since it has no bones I thought that this would better preserve the meat/bone ratio vs adding it on top of their other food. I was looking for iodine, vitamin D and omega threes.
