David's the kinda guy to smirk while he watches a young girl unknowingly eat her own father, all while his helping is five times the size of everyone else's.

While it was very difficult to watch, I thought the writers of the show handled the subject of SA very tastefully. David preyed on Ellie’s worst fear: that she will end up alone. When she leaves the building, having suffered an intense trauma, she’s convinced she’s alone until Joel shows up. Bella portrayed Ellie’s trauma response so beautifully, and Pedro’s delivered “Hey, look, it’s me, it’s okay baby girl” with such a gentleness and softness-I cried so hard. He’s finally embraced being a father again, and while he couldn’t save Ellie physically, he saves her emotionally in that moment. Pedro and Bella are perfect!

I think something that is even worse about David is that in ways… he basically is honest with her and even though Ellie still had her guard up at the beginning, he was pretty good at knowing how to read her and respond and was slowly getting her guard down. Like while sitting at that fire at the start even with Ellie constantly insulting him and cracking one liners, he’d just accept it and play along with it to the point that Ellie was even smiling despite still holding the gun, you can tell her guard is let down until he makes that ‘crazy man’ comment. Plus he uses it to his advantage and he’s both right and wrong about Ellie, this isn’t a bad thing necessarily but I think he’s right when he says that she has a violent heart. She also sees violence as a way to protect people she lives in this world. But the difference is is that Ellie has empathy and she does what’s right

@@clover2739 Nolan North, the guy who voiced the character in the video game (and is known for voicing a lot of big names in the industry as a whole) loved the role because, even though he is an antagonist, David never lies to Ellie. but at the same time everything he says is with the purpose of manipulating her. its great dialogue which gives a great canvass for a great performance and both Nolan North and Scott Shepard who plays him here run with it and make a really great performance.

James aka Buddy-Boy was played by the voice actor (Troy Baker) who brought Joel to life in in the video game! This includes both performance capture and voice acting. :)

Not just the voice. He's the motion-capture actor too. Most videogames nowadays use mo-cap (Avatar style), voice acting is not that prevalent anymore.

@@b.u.l.1734 Yeah, I'm going to edit my post. It was a pure performance capture. I would love to see the girls watch how many times they redid the Sarah death scene take to get it perfect in the video game. "The Last of Us - Sarah's Death Performance Capture"

The realization that the reason that guy attacked Joel is because they were def going to eat him. 😳 And probably the reason they let her heal him... So they could be heroes to the town by saying they avenged their friend, but also... So they could eat him... 😫 And when the guy asked why they can't just let the girl go.... It felt like they knew it was better for her to be let go or die rather than be taken back with David. I think they knew what was up.

Everyone thinks she's doing a Joel impression and trying to act tough but according to Bella Ramsey, that's not the case. This scene was shot during February in Alberta. The day of shooting the temperature was -17 degrees Celsius. "It was cold. My voice sort of changes a bit in that scene. Hearing it back - I've just heard the ADR, I haven't actually seen the episode yet - it's so hard to speak normally when it's that cold, like your mouth just doesn't work. And I was holding the real gun, because the rubber one didn't look real enough, or they didn't have it, or something. So I have this real heavy gun, and Ali Abbasi, the director of that episode, he likes long takes. Like, eight-minute long takes, holding this super heavy gun in the freezing cold, it was… everything you see is very real. I'm glad of it, because you can tell when something is legit. And yeah, it was cold, man. We huddled around the heaters."

one of my favorite things about this show is that they use some of the voice actors from the game and recast them into different roles. kathleen's friend perry is played by game tommy's voice actor, james from this episode is played by game joel's voice actor, and game ellie's voice actor has a role in the next episode (not gonna say who to avoid spoiling teehee)

It's always interesting to watch people react to this blind. The text here is that Joel is ruthless & brutal & his worst characteristics have rubbed off on Ellie. Going forward, this is very important. This moment is the fulcrum around which everything else revolves. The key here is that they didn't just defend themselves, they relished in the brutality. They enjoyed it. Bella said that the most traumatic thing for Ellie wasn't anything David did, but what she did to him. This is the thesis of the work, & it's what makes it so brilliant & true. We're trained to cheer for "heroes" being brutal...not here. It's viscous & gross & traumatic. Because that's what violence is, no matter who co.mits it or what their reason is. It does just as much damage to them as it does to those they commit it against.
@trickykondo1021
@trickykondo1021 Жыл бұрын
It's interesting how my reaction was pretty different from some of the others I've been reading that were more or less enthusiastic about that scene. While part of me was definitely rooting Ellie on, it made me totally distraught. It was watching her overcome by desperation and anger, and having to resort (understandably) to brutality the way you never want someone to have to. I just felt so bad for her with how unfair and horrific it was... sad and angry that she had to do it to survive.

It's interesting that after each episode there's a podcast hosted by Troy Baker with Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin where they discuss how the episode was written and what they were trying to get across, but most people seem not to be aware of this. Craig has made a very specific point about how Joel and Ellie are alike in that they both have not only the use of violence as part of their makeup but how much they enjoy being violent and inflicting pain on others. They are easy to fall in love with but they both have a monster inside them that can't be easily justified as just what must be done to survive. People hate David and rightly so but Criag said that David was absolutely correct when he said he could see the violent heart inside Ellie that he shared with her. He did not mean that she could use violence to save the day in a heroic way but rather that violence was something she enjoyed and would use to get what she wanted. Craig said that when Ellie watched Joel beat the FEDRA soldier to death with his fist she was activated by it. Meaning it affected something inside of her. What David did was even stronger than that, he unleashed something in her that will have extreme consequences in the upcoming seasons just as Joel's actions will have for him.

Knowing the ending it puts so many scenes with 'Buddy-Boy' into an entirely different perspective. Really good writing on their part. Buddy wasn't concerned about David when he left him alone with her during the deer scene. He was worried about HER and what David might do. Then the 2nd time is when he wanted to shoot her after shooting the horse. He wanted to kill her humanely because once again he knew what David would do. Not sure why you just wouldn't smoke the predator instead. The mere fact his group is so hungry they resort to eating people proves he's a bad leader. It's like damn none of you know how to grow crops and then preserve them for the winter?

Before this episode came out a lot of people were worried that the show would try to humanise David that we know in the game… nope they made it clear he is a disgusting person. In fact they made him even worse and creepier in ways. Kudos to the actor who played him… he did a great job and it’s must be hard not being disgusted with yourself while playing a character like that. Bella’s screams while killing David was chilling they are so good as Ellie I refuse to hear otherwise anymore, I couldn’t even cheer her for killing David, I just felt horrible for her while watching it like that’s so traumatic. Like other people have said, James in the show is played by the guy who played Joel in the games. So basically current Ellie gets to kill the original Joel! It must be weird being so involved in a series and a character, like he’s been Joel for basically a decade and now he’s in the same series in a tv show who’s playing a character who’s on the opposite side of Joel

This is when I especially love the show, when they go canon game moments. Not to be that watcher, but if you're doing the last of us, don't do it like fanfiction using the universe while using the characters only to gain reads, do you know what I mean? But 😍 my favorite Joel. Such a hot one. Watch Pedro on Hot Ones, so charming and funny. Bella needs that standing 👏 she was perfect. And I love that James was the man who did game Joel's movement and voice. Homage 💕

Honestly at this point in the show I was totally turned off. The infected are basically zombies, ok, granted, that’s disturbing and grotesque but kind of par for the course. But this episode features actual cannibalism, torture, sexual violence, and a really perverted cult leader view of the future. It was kind of…too much for me, to be honest (especially the shot of the human carcasses hanging). Great storytelling and I’m not faulting anybody who loves this show but like… why did I need to see all that 😂

@@micahsnow346 I'm an atheist but yes, it would be kinda refreshing to see a religious leader in one of these types of shows that wasn't total a piece of shit. Obviously it makes sense that some people would exploit religion to put themselves in a position of power and authority, but even in an apocalypse it's not like there wouldn't _also_ be good people who just happen to be religious leaders.
