When I first watched the TLoU series, I was disappointed with episode three. Only over time did I begin to appreciate it artistically. I don't have a favorite episode. I think they are all good. Some may be better than others, but the whole thing does the job... The only thing I missed in this series was too few "zombies". There are also some differences from game play. In the game, Ellie meets Bill. But the general meaning of the message has been retained...
@Saphthings
@Saphthings Жыл бұрын
The episode is about the main theme of The Last of Us. Surviving vs Living. Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live.s That argument in the street is where the game Bill and the show Bill's timeline diverge. In the game Bill says absolutely not, Frank starts resenting him because he’s an extrovert. Eventually Frank leaves, gets bitten, hangs himself to not turn. And leaves an angry letter to Bill, to which Bill swallows his tears and feelings and goes, “Well then fuck you too”. Bill will die bitter and angry having never lived at all. In the show Bill compromised a bit, and let Frank love him how he wanted to love him. Let him make a friend, Tess and Joel. Spruce up the neighborhood. Frank in turn compromised and settled for just that. It’s still an apocalypse, he can’t invite too many people or do too much. So they both died satisfied, in each other’s arms, after a full life. In either case their plot purpose is to teach Joel that surviving isn’t enough. In the game Bill shows Joel how bad and purposeless his life can be if he doesn’t open up. In the show Bill shows Joel how good it can be if he opens up. Bill lets the "danger" song play so that Joel and Tess would come, and get all the weapons and things they needed to have a happy ending like he did. If you read the rest of the letter Bill tells Joel which wine to use in order for Joel to woo Tess and start doing more than just surviving. But it's too late for Tess. Joel reads the letter and realizes that Frank died happy. And Tess died never having that chance. He looks at the key in his hand, and he could part ways with Ellie, but now Tess told him to save who he could save. Bill told him to protect others are what they're for. And he decides to open up a bit, the first time since the time stuck on his broken watch. Both Bill and Franks from the game and show are sides of the same coin. The bad ending. And the good ending.

Yours is the best description of what is happening that I have heard. I have been trying to tell people that with out this episode the whole thing doesn’t make sense. Joel has clearly already give up on mankind. He is only taking Elli to Bill and Franks because of Tess. The note is the turning point. The beginning of the journey. I love the episode, but at the river the exchange between the two should have been Joel coming back with “ Yes you are a commodity that has no value to me now. And I am only delivering you to Bill and Frank because of Tess” or something like that.

I think that each version fits the Joel given Remember when Joel was blocked by Malik in the bus and Tess is the one who had him sit down? "Oh, sorry Tess, didn't know he was with you". When Robert was the one chosen to do the mission? In the Show, Joel is the one who everyone fears. They are Marline's first choice. When Tess said, "There is enough here that you must feel some kind of obligation to me" - acknowledging that he loved her enough and she knew it In the Show, Tess said: "I never asked you to feel the way I felt" - which acknowledges he didn't feel strongly for her and she knew it. Game Joel was at a crossroads. He needed a narrative Warning of what could happen IF he closed himself off after Tess died. The Show Joel was already closed off. He was the Old Curmudgeon. There was no narrative need to provide a warning as Joel was already there. The Show Joel needed a narrative contrast to the scale that had Joel already at the screw the world stage. Game Joel wasn't there yet. He said "you keep finding something to fight for". He found it in Tess then Ellie. Show Joel did NOT find anyone until Ellie. He kept going until he connected with Ellie ("If you just keep going, you'll find something new to fight for".)

It really drives me up the wall. So many people treat TV as if it were a wikipedia article you watch instead of read. They never take the time to appreciate the artistic values of media, like themes and motifs. Americans generally tend to have pretty poor literacy skills in those areas.

After this episode, I had to remind myself that Nick Offerman was married to a woman (an absolutely beautiful relationship btw). He played a conservative gay man so well that I was convinced he was bi at some point. I think he's just that amazing of an actor and enough of an ally that he understands, as well as he could, what that reaction to being able to accept closeted feelings is like.

The best thing about the change is that it still serves the same thematic function. In the game, Bill is a dark portent of a future Joel could have if he shuts other people out. Show Bill shows Joel the value of letting other people into his life, but makes it positive and beautiful instead of tragic. Either way, Joel learns the value of human connection.

Just that i had watched something special that i propably will remember for a long time! This episode really showed the strengt of this series! Giving backstory to the side characters was an excellent idea! The story of Bill and Frank was very human and emotional! I will never forget that Piano-scene! Surprisingly moving! The actors did a fantastic job of creating this unique relationship! I think I shed a tear multiple times! The formular of the show might not be new, but episodes like this, makes it feel fresh and unique! Look forward to it!

They altered the story, but it ultimately leads to the same character growth out of Joel. In the game, the tragedy that befalls Bill with Frank is traumatic and he closes himself off from the world which Joel sees that if he keeps going down his path will end up possibly being like the paranoid Bill that can't find any enjoyment after loss. So it uses a more negative connotation. In the show though, they use a positive spin to relay the same message and it works really well.

@CasualGamerDude
@CasualGamerDude Жыл бұрын
I think this version of Bill and Frank are much better. In the game, you get to Bill's place, it's much more run down, and you help Bill fight off the hoard, and afterwards, Bill, Ellie, and Joel go to the neighboring garage and house and find Frank, who had hung himself with a suicide note essentially telling Bill to go fuck himself and that he never liked Bill. They had some fight which led to this. Personally, I didn't even catch on to the fact they were gay in the game until after Joel and Ellie left Bill, and Ellie had stolen one of Bill's Porno mags, and they mentioned it. I love the TV Show's versions of Bill and Frank much better.

Girls if you want to know what the scene of ellie cutting and killing the infected meant, it was to show if the infected are still "human" in some leves: if they can make words, feel things, communicate with others who are not infected, etc. You can see in ellie's face the curiosity when approaching and using her knife on the infected, she wanted to see if "he" could still feel something like pain, and upon a negative answer to her concerns she killed it. And trust me when I tell you, this won't be the only time you'll see this, because there will an upcoming episode where you will see with your very eyes if the infected people are still people somehow, and it is going to destroy you both just like this episode did. Great reaction as always keep it up 😁

Nationally, yes. The sadder fact is we aren't talking years. Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled on November 18, 2003, that gay and lesbian couples could no longer be excluded from obtaining civil marriages in Massachusetts. Outbreak is suppose to be in September. Gay marriage was MONTHS away in the state, not years. It got steamrolled by the Outbreak

But I wanted the magazine line from Ellie about sticky pages, but I guess it would have completely killed the sweetness of it. I also wanted to see a bit of their created story mixed with game content because the whole action and bloaters thing was a favorite for me. im not sure but i assumed he got a stroke. if you look at the painting he was making while he was in the wheelchair on the porch he couldt paint the right side of the face (maybe an artistic choice) but when you look at the other paintings and portraits in the house, like the one above their bed, you see a portrait with "both sides" painted. so i assumed it was a stroke that left him with perhaps some immobility on his right side and he obviously couldnt walk. also i dont think there is much of a cure now or in 2003 for a stroke but i could be wrong

I'm not sure why it seems so much more sad for someone to die of old age or something so mundane during an apocalypse. I feel like that should be a good thing, like they survived all the new perils of the world long enough to have the same ordinary and mundane death that probably would've met them had the apocalypse not even happened. Maybe it's cuz it feels like being killed by age or disease is "dying for nothing", and being killed by zombies or raiders or FEDRA at least means they died fighting for survival, or freedom, or something. Objectively, Bill and Frank managed to have the best life and death of probably anybody on Earth; they got to live together for 20 years in what was essentially heaven compared to the rest of the world, then they got to live to be killed by natural causes, and died feeling like their lives were totally fulfilled and complete.
