He always seemed insecure though, even when he had most things handed to him by his adopted father, he never trusted him, even when his stepfather attempted to just talk to him, would always be received with bitterness and hostility. I get the guy was a tyrant, but he wasn't one to Peter Tuberculosis. Also, though his step daddy did see Peter as a resource, it was vice versa. Peter Thompson also used him as a resource for his intellectual pursuits.

@@totalnerd5674 I know next to nothing about the War of the Beast so can't tell you much there. As far as the Iron Warriors themselves go, it would never happen both in and out of universe. They are far to bitter and stubborn to ever turn coat back to the Imperium and the Imperium would never take them back. If they did though, with Perturabo, the Imperium would have one of it's greatest legions and most intelligent Primarchs return. With all the knowledge he has on technology, as well as how to mass produce Astartes, he'd be able to stop the technological decay the Imperium suffers, and be able to drastically increase the number of Astartes throughout the galaxy. His legion having access to untainted geneseed from Terras gene vaults would mean they can begin mass producing Iron Warriors, pure blooded ones might I add. The IVth Legion was amongst the strongest of all the legions, with their return the Imperium would be far stronger. I am biased of course.

I agree, however his problem was with being enslaved by a chaos god. If he were somehow able to turn him self into a Daemon Prince through warp fuckery then I think it'd be pretty sick. This is, what most miss is that Pert was born as smart as he ever would be. He knew everything. At a glance. He outpaced everyone. As a child. He never knew what wonder was. He didn’t “discover.” Anything. He already knew how to deconstruct everything. He was so hyper aware he figured out he was constructed, not born. He felt The Warp looking at him. Always. He didn’t “get” friendship. He didn’t “get” social skills. There was only use and benefit. That was and still was the frame by which he saw life. It’s like if you tell a kid he’s dumb over and over again and he knows damn well he’s not but he realizes you’re not gonna stop telling him he is so he just accepts it and hates your guts the entire way because of it. Because he knows what he wants to do but he also knows you won’t ever let him do it. So the hate grows into Iron.

Perturabo is my favorite Primarch, so I've done a good amount of reading and re-reading of their lore. I think it's difficult to separate Perturabo's reputation from the reality of his behavior. He didn't get along well with his brothers and was only close with one of them, insofar as I can tell. So I think there were a lot of whispers behind his back. Also, the Iron Warriors fought in a very different great Crusade than his brothers did. He intentionally took on the most difficult endeavors. So the casualties the Iron Warriors sustained might not be comparable with what was happening in other Legions. I think everyone; Perturabo, his brothers, the Emperor, everyone, assumed the Lord of Iron was unbreakable. But in fact he was far more susceptible to mental health issues than anyone would've thought, much of which was suffered before the Emperor ever landed on Olympia. I think Perturabo was traumatized by the Great Crusade, especially with the Hrud, and he just snapped. There was no room in his worldview for getting help. And that's really tragic. I think if he'd had some time with Sanguinius, Perturabo might well have been redeemed.

Absolutely why I love him. He seems the most genuinely humanely flawed and more relatable because of it. But going alittle deeper with this, it’s also an allegory on the effects of proper parenting, nurturing and upbringing. Peturabo is Dorns dark mirror in more than just legion tactics. Even their development stories are the same. Dorn lands on a planet and is adopted by its ruler. He grows up being heralded and praised by his father and the planets people. This remains the same for after being found by the emperor and entering the crusade. Peturabo is found by a planets ruler and immediately him and the rest of the planet think how can we make use of this thing. He makes them beautiful works of art and they denigrate him for not using his talents to make engines of war. He finally gives up and becomes his fathers attack dog. And once again after being found by the emperor and joining the crusade as much as he hoped things would be different found out they much the same again. So these two rivals when you look at it are an example of the nature/nurture we saw in people in the real world. You can put the same child prodigy in different environments with different upbringings and see very different results. On one hand with a nurturing family and an Ivey league school you get a Genius and in the broken and abusive home you get Edmund Kemper. Wow. Now that I say that there are a lot of parallels between Perty and Kemper..

Part of the cutting-off-Chaosy-bits and replacing them with augmetics isn’t about the surety of steel, it’s because *fuck Chaos*. As I’m given to understand, Perty basically hates Chaos only marginally less than he hates the Imperium, and considers Daemonhood to be slavery (see his speech when he beats the shit out of Angron, and what he did to the Plague Marines that showed up to offer him Princedom under Nurgle). They don’t see them as “gifts” but as unwanted mutations, so they remove them as you would a tumour. Given they’re the most cohesive and functional traitor legion, I’d say the practice, if not the *attitude*, is working out for them. Frankly, as a tangent, given we know what he dreamed of, it wouldn’t be too far out of character for him to strike out alone, to build a genuinely utopian civilisation, purely out of sheer *spite*. “Fuck you, Dad, your Imperium is a hellhole and you’re a rotting corpse, but MY kingdom is perfect! Could your precious palace-building *Dorn* do that?!” We know he has the plans already drawn up to do so, the technological prowess to pull it off, and the siege/fortifications expertise to defend it. Would be hilarious. Funniest shit I’ve ever seen.

Then uses his own mastery of tech and enslavement of the warp and daemons to make himself a self made daemon prince by learning how to bring himself back to life after death via science and warp rituals and then enhanced himself physically by being the UR obliterator. A walking metal Fortress of guns and cannons. The old lore of him being a daemon prince of chaos undivided in spite of how at odds that is with his most recent characterization being in fact misinformation or bad intel on the end of the Inquisition and other traitor legions. I always see people debate on the idea of Perturabo being a daemon. I always had this theory that the chaos gods did it as their equivalent of a really cruel joke. He's (not by choice) chaos undivided, so good luck on all of them getting together to make him do something; However, them turning him into a daemon would make sense as people forget the chaos gods don't care about anyone (outside of Nurgle in a caring but sadistic fashion) and see the traitor primarchs as their playthings and anyone beneath them usually as cannon fodder and food. Angron was transformed against his will by Khorne and Lorgar. Fulgrim was corrupted by possession and was too broken when he got his body and mind back to be blamed. Magnus was tricked by Tzeentch. Mortarion was forced after hours of suffering in Nurgle's Garden to accept his fate. Lorgar is really the only one who chose to be a daemon prince of his own 100% free will.

Fun fact, that whole, 1/10th of the soldiers having to draw a chance to be beaten to death by their fellow astartes was actually a real punishment used by Generals in ancient Rome. It was called decimation. Roman legions who failed would have to draw straws and whoever drew the short straw would be beaten to death by their fellow soldiers. I believe Crassus, Julius Caesar and Marc Antony all enacted decimation to their legions at one point or another.

Paranoia and fear was what truly damned Perturabo. He refused genuine attempts by his adopted family, legion and brothers to bond because he feared being used. He feared mockery and being seen as weak so he never voiced his displeasure at how his legion was treated. He feared being judged so he never shared his passions or opinions. And he mainly joined Horus because he feared that the emperor would judge him for destroying his world.

honestly my main intro to the Iron Warriors post heresy was the book Storm of Iron. Damn bro the way the IW found out the range and accuracy of the Imperial defenders guns is pretty horrific, so what the IW did was they had recently taken a space port and had taken a few thousand prisoners, imperial guard mostly, and then the IW sent the POW's out into the enemy fortifications where most of them died and the few who scrambled back were gunned down by the IW including a not quite yet Warsmith Honsu. The Imperial gunners were then shown celebrating the fact that they had just thrown off the first wave of the enemy attack until someine saw that the IW were gunning the attackers down then the gunner (who had made a game of killing the POW's and had won said game) realized that they were the prisoners from the space port. Honestly this entire moment was a big win for the IW they got rid of the need to keep unnecessary prisoners who could be in a position to cause chaos in the IW camp and rebel, they learned about the enemies firing patterns, range and accuracy of the IG guns. To rub further salt in the wound the IW dealt blows to the IG morale and bought more time for the main IW forces to fortify the space port and bring in the big guns of chaos.

Want some help with the historical references? Historically speaking the word tyrant was just the word used to describe a Greek king in the early days Greece. And the death lottery is a roman military practice called decimation (literally meaning harming 1/10 in Latin.) It works similarly to how you described, if the army failed particularly badly 1 in 10 were picked randomly selected. However instead of killing them the other 9 would beat the 1 with sticks and then at night the 10% who got unlucky had to sleep outside the camp. Eventually roomers turned this into killing the 10%. (personally I prefer the dreadnought primarch angle because it's more badass and I'm not a fan of chaos.)

Didn't read about Perturabo yet, but from what you are describing, it was a roman-style decimation. Afaik, it was historical, where once a legion messed up bad enough, it was split into groups of ten, and every tenth man, picked by shortest straw, was executed by his 9 "squad-mates".

I’d just add that yes, many Iron Warriors do have quick praises to the dark gods before charging, many do worship the chaos gods and many do try to become daemon princes and receive and keep their chaos gifts, even if most don’t it’s still pretty common among most warbands (like with the Night Lords, where some warbands may have no taint and others where practically every squad has a worshiper or someone tainted)

I don't think Perturabo was fucked from the start just because he landed on Olympia, I think he was fucked because the only "parental figures" that he had were uncaring assholes who saw them as tools at best, those being Perry's dad and Emps, If any of those two were nice to him at any point I can see Perty growing to be just a dude with anger issues, not a damn sociopath, Primarchs who had NO chance and no Ifs to how much they were doomed are actually Angron and Curze. I can see someone reasonable coming out of Olympia, but out from Nostramo or Nuceria? No chance.

Love this approach you took. Personally I think the demon primarch path could be interesting and sensible for Perturabo again from a utilitarian view. I imagine from his perspective still having contempt overall with demonic stuff that demonhood as an Undivided prince would allow him to remain immortal and therefore have eternity to prove how much better he is, or to be able to be present when he is "ultimately proven right about everything" while remaining independent from each of the gods. As with the fall of Olympia and fear of dad's judgement, Perturabo probably understood that falling to the gods was gonna happen eventually in some way. The only one who seemed to "evade" corruption was Curze (and that didn't end great lol). So becoming a prince Undivided was likely the best way to become a demon on his own terms, rather than getting stuck by circumstance the way Angron or Mortarion were particularly.

One of the definitions I heard of the word "Tyrant" came from when I was studying classical theater for a course where the term came up repeatedly, and our professor said "Don't get confused, the term Tyrant doesn't mean what we think it means in modern context." So Ancient Greece was a city state world back then. Each city was essentially their own independent kingdoms. A King was someone who presided over his own City State. A Tyrant was someone who presided over two or more city states, be it from conquest or other means. It didn't have the same negative connotation that we have, basically it just means a King with several city states under his belt.

Falk ends up ascending to Daemonhood, so he's still kicking around in that sense. The rest of them end up dying in the book of course.

As far as my knowledge goes on their hatred of Chaos, it stems from how they saw it effect the other traitor legions. They saw how it by and large ruined them all both Astartes and their Primarchs (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZeYY2NpjpyNrdE) the III'rd is a great example. At the start of the Heresy the legions all followed Horus but by the end due to the corruption numerous legions were running off to do other things. The Iron Warriors saw how they lost so much discipline and saw such corruption to the Ruinous Powers as weakness. Perturabo saw how it changed Horus from being as he called him "the only honorable man in the galaxy" to going borderline insane and taking away his lead command position during the Siege of Terra and giving it to Mortarian who was now a demon prince. He also got his soul wound from Fulgrim ascending to a demon prince. He later came across Sons of Horus who gave into Nurgle and told him he wouldn't be able to defeat demon prince Angron without Nurgles help (they died very fast) and he then went on to defeating Angron and his legion, despite Angron being a demon prince and himself growing ever weaker from his soul wound. I know I missed some stuff but that's by and large what I know.

If you read Storm of Iron by Graham McNeil it showcases how the Iron Warrior operate. There were characters from the Heresy-era but surprise surprise: They died. The Iron Warriors sent Prisoners of War (captured regiments of hydra cordatus defence force) to probe the defences of the citadel. They basically made the defenders fire on their own people. Prisoners are used as slaves digging meticulously planned trenches toward the enemies defenses. They employ artillery and chaos titans but even those are used like disposable resources. The book also showes the ascension of Honsou to Warsmith and a lone imperial no good guardsman that survived by chance trying to turn his life around. It is the most gruesome 40k book I have read so far, giving insights how chaos marines operate. It is in a time where individual iron warriors also slowly fell to Khorne in a blood rush. It is a heavy but good read. I am continuing the omnibus and am stokes what Peter Turbos Boys have in store for me.

On the topic of the whole Demonculaba thing, I think it really speaks volumes to their sheer pragmatism that *the* most cruel and fucked up thing in the entirety of 40k, something so fucked that Ultramarine librarians were getting visions from basically the Emperor telling them to obliterate it from orbit, was done just for the purpose of getting new marines efficiently. Like it wasn't done as some form of fucked up revenge against the people involved or because the degeneracy involved would please any of the gods, the Iron Warriors did it purely because they just wanted to mass-produce new marines instead of scrounging for recruits when they could. That is fucking terrifying.

I think it big issue with Perturabo being a daemon prince isn't the daemon prince part. But the bigger retcon that GW painted themselves into a corner with daemon prince have to be one of the four Chaos gods, so Be'lakor can be more of a special snowflake. For a long, long time, Chaos Undivided meant more than just picking all or none of the 4 Chaos gods. It also covered minor Chaos gods and just Chaos in a general sense. But a while back (somewhere in 7th ed, I believe), GW seemed to not like the idea of Chaos Undivided and changed the rules to be far more restrictive, and frankly, orderly to what Chaos is. Perturabo and Lorgar just happened to be causalities to this change. And while Lorgar fits better as a Primarch the venerates all of Chaos, Perturabo is left in a strange spot that doesn't really work anymore.

3:08 I know I found this pretty late, but the way you say the definition tyrant is different in the context of the planet Olympia. That is actually how the word Tyrant was treated in classical greco-roman culture. The tyrant was a government type many temporarily transitioned to in times of war to ensure absolute control of territory. It wasn’t thought of as a power trip greedy authoritarianism, but it usually had serious implications, maybe sometimes like life under marshal law-in-effect. The definition you are thinking of is the modern one, more interchangeable with dictator, cadillo etc.

I feel like the iron warriors are one of the only factions in 40k that understand the reality of the universe: "in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war". They recognize the point that life is meaning- and valueless, which is a point of discussion in our reality, but is unquestionably true in 40k. And because there is only war, you have to become the best at war, and to become the best at war you have to play by the rules of the universe and they say not the one who fought with principles or gambled on outside factors wins, but the one last standing
