In the early 80s when I was a young man, an older fella I knew wanted to go to Amsterdam and look at some diamonds. He asked me to go along with him so he was not alone. Having the day to kill the shops had allsorts of wierd and wonderful porn magazines. So I bought a couple wondering how I would get them through customs on the way back. Mild by todays standards they would have been illegal in the UK. Once we got back to the UK my friend asked if I had dared to bring them back. Yes, I said. Where are they? In your briefcase.

You’re such a great story teller! I’m afraid I’d get in way too much trouble if I confessed my sins. But I have a massive smile on my face everytime I think about the shirt we used to get up to.

I liked your tent story, Big Phil Campion? I love being up in high places so bad that I used to get up on the roof when I just a wee whipper-snapper in the late 80's early 90s, but before 1991. I would just jump off the roof and onto the willow tree branches like if I were Tarzan?

Me and my brother carried pagers back then, but for the Fire Brigade. We were up for adventures, so we joined the TA too - which was against the regs of both Uniformed Services. Oh dear... Now there was a lot of training in both services and of course we were tested, so the Headshed of the County Fire Service came down one Tuesday evening to see us put through our paces and tell us whether we had made the grade, and he did the usual big-wig thing of asking a bit about us, shaking hands, wishing us well - and presenting us with a pager each. At last, we could fight fires. Meanwhile in the TA... our unit was due to be Hunter Force for an E and E, so on Friday night we were out capturing Light Infantry, ambushing vehicles, and by Saturday night we'd caught all the squirters and penned them in oast houses at a large farm. Duty done, we handed them over to guards, had a brew and hit our Great Green Caterpillars in an outhouse. Close to midnight, the guy on stag ran in, shouting "FIRE FIRE FIRE NODUF NODUF": A barn full of hay bales had spontaneously combusted just across the farmyard from the pen. We rescued the prisoners, but what could we do about the fire? It was blimmin' raging. Well, nothing, the barn was doomed and nobody could get near it - but there was a brick building which was in danger of collapse from the heat. We had a platoon of prisoners, so my brother and I did what you do with a load of squaddies - got them to find buckets and organised a WWII-style bucket-chain to cool the wall, rotating the lads so they didn't get cooked, because it was melt-your-eyeballs hot. So the Fire Brigade turned up, a tender or two at a time (we were miles from any towns)... and eventually, their top brass because there were so many pumps in attendance. And in the light of this huge fire, the Boss of the County Fire Brigade marvelled that the Army had turned up (nobody would tell him why) and they had saved a building with an old-fashioned bucket-chain and a pond. So he went looking for someone to thank - and he found a couple of Troopers who he was sure he knew from somewhere, but who denied having ever met him before... nope... he just couldn't think where... So... I confess. Sir, if you are still alive, we had met you on the Tuesday before. And yes, we were illegally serving two Uniformed Services. I sincerely apologise. We had to choose in the end. Sorry. We didn't choose the Fire Service... we had a lot of fun fighting fires but there was other fighting to do. Good times.😅

Phil, I remember you telling a story on a podcast which rich resulted in you skipping certain type of parachute training to take the weekend off because you had already "completed it" and then the following Monday you were carrying out the exercises for it...and you weren't ready what so ever! that story had me bursting out laughing... and sort of goes along with the confession stories aha. would love to hear more of that story in depth. great work as always!!

I remember Sidney A. RIP. Guest Instructor on my dems way back in 95 down at P. Make sure your double plugged guys and behind hard cover. This MIGHT be a BIG one. The earth moved as well as half the range!! He blew I think it was 10 kg instead of the 2kg limit. I might be wrong on the amount but it was def on the big side. The locals for miles around were ringing up and complaining. He was in the middle of inventing and testing the kit that went into service. Very clever guy.

Forgive me Campion, for I have sinned! 😂 I went to an all boys sports college in a working class area in coventry.. dont get too impressed.. the only team i made was the chess team! 😂🤦♂️ one of the trips we did was to PGL lincoln with the marines. We were out all day, all week in the rain orienteering, rock climbing, absailing, ziplining. It was great fun but we were KNACKERED! When we got back for dinner on day 1 we were a bit cheesed of that we only had a jacket potato and 3 beans each whilst the house masters (who didnt get involved in the exercise) had roast chicken dinner. Day 2 goes by.. same thing. Day 3 goes by.. same thing. Day 4, we really get annoyed by this. So we hatch a plan... Someone in our dorm could pick locks. That night, after a cross country, we sneak down the stairs after dinner, he picks the lock to the staff kitchen, we nick the bread and toaster (butter and marmalade too if im being honest!) We think we've hit the jackpot! We rush up to the dorm making our toast and marmalade happy as a pig in s**t. Before long the smell travels around the bunk and theres a queue of lads wanting toast! We're selling themfor 50p a slice. What could get better!? Then the fire alarm went off. I panicked. I picked up the toaster, opened the window and threw the thing out. Little did I know that a certain house master was on his way and was taken back to see his staff toaster flung at his own head 😅 Im sorry sir, but if youd have just given us a bit of your roast chicken, we'd have no motive 😂

no one wants a pager these days for some reason. On the aircrew winter escape and evasion week at Otterburn back in the 70s myself and a navigator both found tightly folded five pound notes in our kit and happened to find ourselves within a manageable hike to a wonderful boozer with a log fire.
