I'd returned from 2 years in the COP Platoon based in Armagh and was back with my Battalion in Edinburgh. We when we were called back over to be Province Reserve Company for the marching season. We went to Long Kesh to pick up all the Saxons and we were to move to Portadown where we would be operating from. So my OC said you've just spent 2 years here I want you to lead the Coy Convoy. The problem was, I was a brand new LCpl, however even though I'd done 2 years over there, I didn't have a driving licence so never drove around the place I was normally in the back of some van being driven in the dark to places all over the province. So to cut a long story short, I ended up in the middle of a housing estate with the whole company behind me, but somehow had managed to take us down a street which was a dead end, resulting in utter chaos and by the time we all turned around and got to camp we were about 5 hours late and needless to say my name was utter crap for the rest of the operation which thankfully was only a month and funnily enough I was never asked to lead a convey again, so I suppose there is a silver lining.

I once waaa'd the RSM (2PWRR) when we were at Ballykelly. I used my mate's mobile, called the razzmans office & said; "Is this the RSM?" He said "Yes!" I said "WAAAAAA!" My mate got ripped to shreds without really knowing why & I got away scott free. Jack I know, but very amusing.

I remember serving in a Reserve UKSF unit many moons ago. We went to the ranges and someone forgot the weapon bundles. "I thought you had brought them"!!! We also one again turned up at a range and the ammo was forget!! Once did a course with the regular Blades who promplty turned up again at another range minus half their equipment. A blade sheepishly walked over to us and begged for our spare kit. It helps to have a sense of humour. If I had a pound for every recruit that tabbed into an RV minus his weapon ! or left an RV minus his weapon. I would have a few bob. That used to be a regular occurance when blokes start switching off. Best drill was to always lay your weapon across your feet. That way you cannot set off without tripping over it. Brilliant concept Phil. This will have loads of legs in it. Pull up a sandbag. Carry on.

I was 17 in 78, was Assistant Air Traffic Controller, the lowest of the low in Ops at RAF Honington and had the week before just passed my driving test . Squadron Leader comes out his office and looks at me and says Airman you can drive, come with me, so off we go, with Squadron Leader driving we get to the lights crossing the runway on Red but he calls up to the tower ' Seagull going over to the Chipmonks, we get the OK from tower straight away. We get there and he gives me the keys so I can take the car back.. I am in a hurry caus I was already missing lunch, so as I get to the runway the light just turn red, so remembering what the SqnLeader did I radio the tower and say , as I had heard my boss say ' Seagull returning to Ops' as I drive past the tower I can see everyone in there staring down at me so I wave. As soon as I get back to Ops, everyone is giving me the eye and some laughing and I am told to report straight to the Wing Commander where I get the bollocking of my life, I had used the Squadron Leaders callsign so they thought it was him instead of say 'Seagull Driver', they had had a 4 ship of Buccaneers coming in on finals , and had them overshoot and around on another circuit, I had pissed off alot of pilots, the tower as well as wasted a ton of fuel. On dear, great way to launch my Air Force career!

Hi Phil. I have a story. I was a Royal Green Jacket cadet. I was on summer camp, one night we all got cold. So went out to Rob some coal. I was crawling to the pile. I was taking some I looked up a saw the captain looking at me. So I dumped the coal and ran. I hid under the billet on the metal beam. With a Sargent after me, he could not find me. Ha ha😂. He got such a bolking of the captain. And the captain said to him. Well he escaped from you didn't he. My taste of escape and evading 😊

I was a Royal Green Jacket 3 day school trip cadet… I broke the record for avoiding capture in a game … we were meant to report back in 1 hr if you were still free…. I stayed out of 4 hrs before I gave in and went back… Phil himself was all over me about joining the force after hearing what I had done 😂… he said to my mum on the last day I’m made for the forces sign him up he will excel … glad my mum said no! 😂

I have a confession Phil: I never looked into the background of any of the people that speak so highly of me. @ForceRadioHQ I started my service with D coy 4 para up north in 1990 and had some great times with very professional guys , with quite a few being Falklands vets , had a few years out due to divorce and the MOD disbanding our company. I missed the military so decided to join Reme as a VM around 99 I think as I was good with mechanics and 102bn reme was close to where I was living at the time . I wouldn't have classed myself as being anything special at soldiering but the professionalism between the Parachute Regiment and Reme were like chalk and cheese lol . I was getting bored there so enquired about joining SF reserve in 2002 and was told they would get back to me , I'd totally forgot and got a call out of the blue late 2002 early 2003 to go for an interview for the LAD which I passed with flying colours and probably because the Psi was friends with my brother who was I 2 para at the time . Anyway I went back to my unit and told them to expect some paperwork for a transfer which they tried to talk me out of but I kindly refused lol . The transfer was on its way through nicely and the gulf war broke out , and the next thing I was to find out that I had been mobilised to beef up the numbers at 5 bn reme along with another 250 ta , out of badness I think because I was transferring and there were plenty more from my company that were not mobilised that could of gone . Anyway on to my story Between being a VM in the workshop in shaiba log base , doing 24 hours guards,escorting oil tankers and picking litter I was nominated to be a duty driver which was a Friday night , one of two nights which we were allowed to purchase 2 cans of beer . Anyway I'd collected my personal weapon and kitted up and headed for the nafi to get some supplies for the night as we were headed to basra airport to collect a padre at 6am the following morning, I was waiting in the que to get some tins of pop for the night and one of my pals also on duty driver collected his 2 cans of beer , I said you can't do that can you , he said nah but I'll just stick them in the fridge for tomorrow night , I thought yeah ill do that too . Anyway I get to the front and ask for my coke followed by 2 cans of Stella and this voice comes from behind you are duty driver aren't you , I said yes but explained I was just getting them to save for the following night ,the staff sergeant said no your effing not , I said OK no problem and left them thinking no more of it . I'll finish this when I get back to hotel Ps phil do you know Charlie who was support psi at regent's park in mid 2000 , was a great fella but lost touch when I left and he disappeared to afgan.

I was mobilised with 5bn reme as a VM on op telic 2 from 102bn TA in 2003 to Shaiba log base near Basrah . We were busy most of the time with 3 days in the workshop followed by a 12hr stag and sometimes escorting oil tankers from the nearby oil refinery into Kuwait Anyway one Friday I was nominated to be duty driver so I collected my kit for the night and my personal weapon for a trip to basrah airport to pick up a pardre the following morning . I headed for our naffi to get some cans of pop and snacks for the night and while queuing to get some supplies one of the other guys who was also on duty driver asked for 2 cans of Stella which we were allowed on a Friday and Saturday night so I said I thought you were duty driver , he said yeah but just get them and stick them in the fridge we bought cheap off the locals that was in our tent , I thought yeah sound ill do the same and when I got to the front of the que I said 3 cans of coke and 2 cans of Stella, this voice from behind says your duty driver your not getting any cans of alcohol, I tried to explain that I was just going to put them in the fridge until Saturday night when I was off , the staff sergeant said I don’t effing think so , I said no problem and got my cans of coke , snacks and left thinking no more of it . Prior to this I’d heard the engineers had made a bar with palm trees and a dj at the airport so when I was told we were going there to pick up the pardre I said to the other duty drivers (4 of us in total in 2 snatch land rovers) do you fancy sneaking in a couple of beers at the engineer bar as we would be there at 2100 and not collecting the pardre up until 7 or 8 am the following morning , they all had no balls so I decided to go on my own and have a gander as you do . I had a lovely nice cold beer and it was a great atmosphere but something told me I’d best go just in case I got caught out or grassed on by one of the other guys . I went back to where the other guys were and my number 2 was kipping in the back so I thought fuck it and slept on the roof atop of my jungle sleeping bag quite pleased with myself that I’d got a sneaky one in lol . We got up in the morning, picked up the pardre and delivered him to camp , finished the duty driver in the evening and collected my two beers on the Saturday night to drink with the other guys in the tent . Started the next day as normal , wash, shave , breakfast then off to the workshop. On arrival our tiffie said sergeant major wants to see you and he is not happy , I’m thinking fuck someone grassed or clicked me at the bar , I’d already had two run ins with This guy who was ex regular parachute regiment, me being ex 4 para in the early 90s and all for asking a genuine question (they got us all on parade to tell us they thought there was an imminent attack coming and we were to draw our weapons at 1800 , when he said any questions at the end I asked what were we to draw ammunition as the weapons container and ammunition were half a click apart he went fucking nuts and said I was trying to make him look a cunt , genuine question I though , weapons no good without ammunition). So I proceed to his office and knock on the door corporal LAW sir , he said wait outside, a few mins later he calls me in and I stand to attention and he goes off on one again , out with it LAW , I said I don’t know what your talking about sir , all the while thinking someone grassed me for going to the engineers bar , he repeated himself “ come on out with it you know what you did “ I said again I don’t know what you are talking about . And then he tells me you were duty driver and you were trying to get beer from the naffi to drink on duty , the staff sergeant had obviously grassed me up but it was kind of a relief and I tried to explain that I was just getting them to put in the fridge for when I was off duty but he was having none of it and was getting more irate by the second, the next thing he ran at me from behind his desk and I’m thinking he is going to punch my and I was ready for him stood there stiff to attention with my fists clenched waiting for him to throw the first punch so if I had to I could defend myself knowing if it did happen we would likely both be on the next flight back to the UK on charges . His face was in mine , his nose was nearly toughing mine and he was spitting in my face gobbing off at me , and then he shouts , get out get out before I do something I regret, I turned about and left and actually felt quite happy I’d got away with my little sin , and funny enough that was the last run in I had with , maybe he just thought I was a lost cause lol , I’d taken quite a bit of shit out there I’d just got to the point where I wasn’t going to take anymore and stood my ground whatever the consequences might have been .
