The efficiency argument is disingenuous since it's divorced from a league that is constantly changing. Kobe was above average efficient throughout his career up until his achilles injury at age 34, while also being one of the highest volume scorers in the league each year. Kobe always gets penalized for playing during arguably the most defensively orientated era ever in the NBA, with heavy defense, low pace, hand checking that even after it was taken off the books wasn't called until he was mostly out of the league, before modern 3pt spacing, after illegal defense was taken out and during a time where you could get physical with people. Drop Kobe into the modern game and he'd feast all day every day and his efficiency would skyrocket.

Damn, no one is talking about Larry Bird. I'm not saying he is the best scorer of all time, but you could def make an argument for him. Could literally score from anywhere, could post up, score off offensive rebounds, create space of the fake passes (because he was such a great passer and had one of the best basketball I.Q's of all time). Literally his only weakness was he wasn't super athletic, but even that didn't hold him back. IMO if Larry had better athleticism, he would have been the greatest scorer of all time but I REPEAT, just my opinion.
@salacommander26746 жыл бұрын
Agreed. He could do literally anything he wanted to on the floor and trash talk the other team about it too. Bird was actually fairly athletic in his younger days as well, but still nothing compared to MJ or Kobe's athleticism.

Most talented scorer maybe but not the best/greatest scorer, those are two different things. The greatest scorer is more factual based on stats and that goes to either Jordan or LeBron, most talented however is more about how many ways you can score efficiently at a high level and depending on some stats and eye test it leaves the debate open for who wears that crown. It can be Jordan, LeBron, KD, Harden (although I feel like they both need to play a little longer), Kobe, Bird etc..
@jamesburgess2k6 жыл бұрын
I may be the in wrong here, but I feel that being the most versatile scorer doesn't necessarily mean the better scorer. I think the most efficient scorer should be the best scorer (when shooting in volume of course). Was Shaq a liability at the line? Of course, but he still could put up 30 a night in his prime. Was LeBron weak shooting the 3? Of course, yet he rarely shot 3s and found other ways to score. These are all just examples, but just to set up my point. You really can't eliminate big men like Kareem or Wilt just because they can't shoot, when they never even attempted those shots in the first place. It's just not a fair critique of their scoring ability. I'll take a guy who's 70% under the basket when that's the only shot they take, than a guy who's 47% all over the court.
@26Isoken6 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right. The ignorance spewed in this video was down right unbelievable.
@saberplaytop6 жыл бұрын
Most versatile scorer does mean the better scorer. Just because a player has high scoring totals and overall is efficient does not mean he is most optimal in every posession and every scenario. Even if Shaq was by far more efficient than Kobe, who was the go-to option in the fourth quarter? Kobe. Because he is able to make plays and score from every spot on the court, because he isn't a liability if he gets hacked and even if there's no-calls, he can still manufacture a good look. Even if Kareem or Wilt were such great scorers, who was leading the offense in clutch situations? Magic and West. LeBron was weak at shooting the 3, but he did not RARELY shoot 3's, his FGA attempts from 3 are the same as Kobe's. In fact his shooting was so poor that successful NBA defensive gameplans against Lebron was to let him shoot, and these gameplans, many time DID work, especially in the Finals. So it makes little sense to me that a player's flaws, which were EXPLOITED, not only costed him his overall proficiency and effectiveness from the floor, but it would often times directly lead to a loss, such flaws that another player doesn't have. A guy who shoots 70% under the basket is not the same as a guy who shoots 47% all over the floor. #1, the guy who shoots 47% all over the floor, actually shoots anywhere from 55-65% in the paint. He simply has more attempts from outside the paint which lowers his overall FG%. This is the case for Kobe Bryant, his relatively "low" inefficiency is not because he was inefficient at anything, it was because he simply took more a lot more jumpers than probably every great player in NBA history. Only 9% of Kobe's attempts are in the paint (in comparison Lebron's is 36%), but he is not by any means inefficient in each respective range from the court than any other player, and in many cases MORE efficient while taking much harder shots.
@guiga16056 жыл бұрын
Kobe attempted 21% of his shots from 3 feet or less from the basket for his career, 9% is a number you pulled out of nowhere

I think the main issue is the term “the best scorer”, it’s way too vague and leaves way too much up for interpretation, is the best scorer the one who put up the highest numbers, the most efficient numbers, were they the most dominant, most versatile, best shooter, best moves, most moves, etc

This is how I personally view it (MEANING IN MY OPINION) GREATEST SCORER (ppg+ efficiency) 1. Wilt (30, 54 percent) 2. Jordan (30, 49 percent) 3. LeBron (27, 50 percent) 3b. Durant (27, 49 percent) MOST TALENTED SCORER (mid-range, 3point, free throw, driving, post game, pull up, off the dribble, ball, efficiency, consistency and etc). 1. Kevin durant- kd is a all time great shooter can shoot from anywhere plus his length and height gives him a big advantage against his opponents he has a great pull up especially from 3 the only thing I would say he isn't just great at is his post game which even from there he doesn't have to do much but just shoot over you. 2. Kobe- I went back and forth on this one between Jordan and kobe it could honestly go either way but I went with kobe mostly because of the 3 pointer kobe like kd could shoot anywhere on the floor (kd is just 7 foot tall) kobe unlike kd had a great post game with great foot work and moves kobe really had no weakness has a scorer kobe just had incredible highs and some lows which is why I went with kd being number and being 7 foot tall. 3. Jordan- Jordan basically for the same reason as kobe he could hit the mid range anywhere on the court drive and got better at the 3 ball later on but kobe and kd were better 3 point shooters. BEST SCORER EVER (On this I factor everything that I listed above but intangibles or high on this one this is how I feel if I had to get a bucket for my life) 1. Jordan Nothing much to be said jordan has 10 scoring titles and although he isn't quite as gifted a scorer as durant Jordan scores more and is more efficent more crafty more moves as great as kd is we haven't seen him guarded against anyone like pippen with handchecking and the big men in the paint. 2. Kobe- Besides that one suns series were kobe was pouting I can't remember any other time were kobe didn't shoot or was afraid to shoot this is were I put kobe over kd as great as a scorer and talented a scores that kd is at times he is not aggressive enough I believe if he had kobe's mindset he would've never left okc and would've won titles there everyone always likes to blame westbrook but if you switch kobe and kd in that warriors series that they were up 3-1 I think kobe gets that serious home then gets a ring against the injured cavs. 3. Kd/Bird- kd is the most talented scorer I have ever seen he's efficient and has no real weakness the only thing that keeps from #2 and #1 is his mindset and that is were kobe and Jordan excelled. Bird- If I had one person to shoot a jumpshot to save my life it would probably be Larry Bird the trash talking and confidence of Bird comes second to know one Bird could shoot anywhere on the floor what hurts bird is his athleticism but Bird's heart and intangibles put him tied at third for best scorer ever for me.

Jordan has a higher career ppg and more career total points than Wilt on better efficiency , if you take into account Wilt ' s terrible free throw shooting and bear in mind that stats in the 60s were higher due to a higher amount of posessions per game . It shouldn ' t really be a debate between these two , MJ was a more talented scorer and a better scorer statwise . I could see the argument for KD

stiv - Even Jordan doesn't compare to what Wilt did as a scorer. Wilt was a revolution to scoring in the NBA. Wilt was shooting fadeaways before Jordan and Dirk were even born. He was the first player ever to have a 30+ppg season, and he did it his first year in the league with 37.6ppg which still has never been surpassed by any player other than Wilt himself, including Jordan. Wilt's peak scoring seasons aren't even in the realm of possibility for other players to do. When Wilt averaged 50.4ppg, the 2nd leading scorer was Bellamy with 31.6ppg. That's an 18.8ppg difference. That's 68% greater scoring output than the 2nd best scorer in the league. In 1963 Wilt averaged 44.8ppg and Baylor was 2nd with 34ppg, which is 10.8ppg more than Baylor or 32% greater. There's never been that large of a discrepancy between the #1 and #2 scorer in the NBA. That can't be explained by there being more possessions in the 60s. For comparison, Jordan's best scoring season was 27% greater scoring output than the #2 scorer in the league. Wilt dominated scoring to a degree that nobody else ever has.

KD has a much higher effective field goal %, was a much better jump shooter (infinitely better 3p shooter), played less minutes per game (especially where MJ played 40+ MPG 3 times). As for regular FG %, KD came in to the league much younger than MJ (over 2 years younger if I remember correctly) and his rookie year is where he had by far his worst FG%. Without that rookie year, his regular FG% would be 49.6%, which is 0.1% less than MJ's career FG%. Insanely impressive especially when you consider the 3s. KD is also about 7 feet tall, while MJ is 6"6. KD can shoot over people like MJ simply could not do especially against taller defenders, and the other advantages that come with being 7 feet tall. I also hate that people say the defense was SO much tougher back in MJs era than it is now when it comes to do with the ball handler, and they didn't call as many soft fouls etc. This is a general statement and not aimed at Dom btw, just saying it annoys me. Sure, the rules protect the ball handler more now, but defenders are simply more athletic, and SIGNIFICANTLY more skilled in todays game. MJ also got a ton of calls and got to the line plenty. One year he averaged almost 12 FTA per game. KD has only averaged 10+ once in his entire career. MJ averaged more FTA per game in his career than Durant has as well, so stop acting like stars didn't get calls back then especially MJ. That reminds me of one more thing which contributes to KD's case. He is a better free throw shooter than MJ as well. This adds to efficiency. MJ shot 83.5% from FT for his career, while KD has shot 88.2% which is quite significant. As for total points in MJs career, that stuff matters, but not as much as people like to try to make it. MJ was able to play a ton of minutes, played 82 games or damn close to it many seasons, and had nobody eating in to his scoring #s. KD has played with Westbrook 8 out of his 11 career seasons. and half of those Westbrook played all 82 games, and only one year did he play under 66 games. Westbrook routinely would run down the shot clock and pass it to KD with like 5 seconds left and KD had to create something out of thin air. MJ never played with someone like that in his career, and that no doubt ate in to KDs efficiency numbers. MJ had quite the opposite in Pippen who was an amazing playmaking point forward and was very unselfish. MJ also got a year off, and sure he was still close to the top of his game, but that year surely helped to rest his body and clear his head after grueling playoff runs, so it can be a pro and a con. Also one more thing. According to Basketball Reference, KD has scored 20,913 career points, while MJ has scored 32,292. Let's say KD plays 6 more years (so until hes 35, he could VERY well play more as his game doesn't rely much on athleticism at all), averages 73 games a year, and averages about 26 PPG. That's another 11,388 points, making his total 32,301 points, which would be higher than MJs total points scored. Even if he played 7 more years instead of 6, but only averaged 23.5PPG, that's still 11,515 points making his total 32,428 which is also passing MJs point total. We can't currently judge because KD's career is far from over, so I'll reserve judgement until then. It's funny because I'm actually the polar opposite of a KD stan or fan. I was a fan of his before he went to GSW, and while I still appreciate his greatness, I am not at ALL a fan of his because of that move. I am way more of a fan of MJ (from a bball standpoint) and LeBron (bball and he's just an incredible role model/person in general) than I am of KD. I just wanted to play devil's advocate here with the #s and this is coming from (like I said) someone who does not like KD at all so I'm about as unbiased as possible. I just think it's unfair to judge who's the better pure scorer until KD's career is over. I do believe that if he continues at this level or close to it for a few more years, I think KD would be a better pure scorer than MJ, and pretty much anyone who ever played the game up until that point. As an overall basketball player though, give me a bunch of people over KD. Give me MJ, LeBron, Magic...and I could sit here and name more but I won't. You get the point. This was just about PURE SCORING ABILITY. I doubt you'll read this Dom, as it's long as hell, but I was really bored at 3AM so decided to look in to this after watching your video and play devil's advocate here. My true opinion is that KD will end up being a better pure scorer than MJ at the end of his career though. Anyway, I'm a huge fan of your content and have been subbed to both of your channels for a long time. I hope you continue to put out extremely high quality content. Kobe had 6 60+ point games Durant has none, Kobe had 26 50+ point games Durant has 4, Kobe had 134 40+ point games Durant has 35. Kobe has way more scoring achievements like scoring 81 points, having 9 games in a row with 40+ points, having 4 games in a row with 50+ points, averaging 40+ points for a month twice, scoring 55 on a half(Durant's career-high on a game is 54), outscoring the Mavericks 62-60 in three quarters. Durant has done nothing quite as impressive. And to be fair, Kobe did all that on his first 11 seasons of his careers, the number of seasons KD is around. KD has 4 scoring titles while Kobe has 2, however KD won his two scoring titles in 2011 and 2012 averaging just 27.7 and 28 points respectively. Kobe had multiple scoring seasons like these two, like averaging 30 points in 2003, 28.5 points in 2001 or 28.3 points in 2008. However Kobe had to compete with elite scorers like Prime Iverson and prime McGrady. However KD has a career 49% field goal percentage compared to Kobe's 45% and that's all that matters right? 😂

KD is the best offensive player ever. Literally a complete mis match. Can do everything. 7 ft player that plays like a guard and he scores effortlessly. I’m a Kobe fan but a lot of his best scoring comes from taking a lot of shots and taking a lot of free throws. This isn’t an argument
@Hidden_Seeker_6 жыл бұрын
KD never had the mentality of Jordan or Kobe. If he had more dominant games then maybe, but he's a cupcake, and if I needed one person to take over a game and just score he would only be my third choice.
@jerelwedge886 жыл бұрын
Voltaire sounds like you are picking Someone to lead a team over who to go to for just buckets. KD is that guy.
@Hidden_Seeker_6 жыл бұрын
J Crossover, nah. Even just to get buckets I would take Kobe or MJ. Kobe has had more points in one half than KD's career high for a game. KD is the most complete, versatile scorer, but Jordan and Kobe are better scorers
@jerelwedge886 жыл бұрын
Erik Lerström the question presented was “who is who is the best scorer?” Not who is the best player or who is the best at leading a team. KD will tell you himself he’s not a leader. Once again who is the best scorer? The guy is 7ft and can break your ankles or shoot over the top of anyone with easy. The guy can hit from 35 ft out no sweat. He’s the best at putting the ball in the hole period. I don’t care that he’s on the warriors. As a matter of fact I’m glad he is cuz now he’s even more unstoppable. Steph will go off with his 3rd quarter bombs from deep but then at the end of the game in the box score you see KD dropped the quietest 31 pts you will ever see.
@jerelwedge886 жыл бұрын
Voltaire I just watch their games. I don’t look at stats to decide this. Kobe and MJ jack up a ton of shots. Once again you want to bring up how many points Kobe scored in a half? How many of those points were free throws?
@gunveersinghdhir61864 жыл бұрын
The 80s was an extremely fast paced era where teams averaged 111 ppg so I don't know where this notion of that era having the best defense ever came up. Obviously players in that era had higher efficiency and more ppg as opposed to Kobe's era which is most defense oriented era EVER so therefore this notion that hand checking being removed made offense easier cause the stats point in a COMPLETELY different direction. The sane goes for a player like Lebron who played in an extremely slow placed era with much lower efficiency from like 03 to 2014 and still managed to shoot over 50 percent. Something which DEFINITELY should've been considered. Dom has really worked on his basketball knowledge NOW cause most of his old videos like this one are terribly misinformed.

You didn't talk about how they added zone defense in the early 2000s. Zone defense makes scoring significantly harder, and Jordan didn't have to deal with that. Yes, he had to deal with hand checking and physicality, but there was no Zone defense. When he was on the Thunder, Opponents keyed in on Kevin Durant and designed systems to stop him. Jordan never had to deal with this. Jordan only had to deal with hard doubles, where you must leave your man, which are very simple to get out of. Despite this, KD still scored more efficiently. Kd has more moves, a better shot, taller, I'd even say craftier, so I'd have to give it to Durant. Also, I'm not saying he's really in the discussion, but Dirk deserves a shout for sure.

Looking at basketball reference, teams didn’t take an average of more than ten threes per game until after Jordan came back from his first retirement and league average from his rookie year until coming back from his first retirement was between 29 and 33%. League average from when Kobe first became an all star until when he tore his Achilles was around 35% pretty much every year on about 16 attempts per game in that stretch. The league averages from 2000 until now are all around 35 or 36%. People who say Kobe played in the worst spaced era would be wrong. So please stop putting those comments cuz they aren’t true

What nobody, and I mean nobody, talks about is playing against a Zone Defense. Jordan I've always said is the best one on one player that ever lived because that's all we saw. Him beating the hell out of whoever guarded him. After 2000, when they allowed Zone Defense removing the illegal defense rule, Kobe put up the numbers he did against that kind of D. Yea there was no hand checking and all that I get it but playing a Zone defense is tough for players who are primary scorers. Jordan never had to deal with that in his time with the Bulls. And as far as the scoring titles, exactly who were the primary scorers of the 90s? Like who were the best ones really. Jordan, Robinson, Shaq, Drexler maybe. Jordan always won that title with ease. KD and Kobe battled some great scorers for those scoring titles. Allen Iverson, Tracy McGrady, Carmelo Anthony, Harden, Westbrook, I mean these guys are crazy good scorers. One thing about the handchecking being way harder to score on but back then you couldnt really double team still probably quite a bit harder to score though

The greatest scorer is such a broad title. I mean Wilt put up 50 points a game, but can't hit anything past 8 feet. Steph Curry is the greatest 3 point shooter ever, he's an all time great ball handler, good mid game, and is one of the best finishing pg's in the league. KD can do everything at an all time level besides playmake on the offensive end. MJ is MJ and will score no matter what. And if we're talking about MJ, what about prime offensive LeBron? He's not going to miss inside, if he does he'll get the rebound right back and score, he's an all time great playmaker so the floor spaces out for him, and he can also shoot 3's when we're talking about 2018 LeBron.

MJs ppg averages in the 80s were slightly inflated because 80s basketball was probably the era of the fastest pace ever ran, even faster than today. If you look at teams back then a lot of them were averaging over 120 ppg and some of the highest scoring games in NBA history were played in the 80s. This could have been caused by the rise of the showtime era Lakers where teams may have tried to emulate their fast-paced style of ball. The defenses may have been more physical back then but they're certainly not 'better' per se.

KD may actually be today's Kevin McHale. McHale would have several opportunities to destroy teams with his scoring but he never had it in him to put shoes on the neck of the opponent like Bird.
