I shouldn't be spewing this out before watching the video, but in my own opinion Vito excelled at his conception of what an "old world" mafia boss should be. Family and friends oriented, listening to the little people in the neighborhood, having moral lines he won't cross. Michael, on the other hand, is new world. Cutthroat, somewhat cartel-like, anything for the sake of expanding his business and power even at the cost of family and friends. They're stark opposites to each other.

Also, Vito literally helped every single person who was willing to kiss his hand and call him godfather, even the people who could barely offer anything in return. He does even more in the book. (He helps a poor woman avoid being evicted with her pet.) He sends his consigliere across the country to personally help Johnny Fontane, a washed-up singer who couldn't sing anymore. He takes in an orphan kid because he was friends with his son Santino. And he was never overly harsh with his family, no matter how unfit they were, which was arguably his biggest weakness. Vito wanted to become a powerful man so that the pezzonovantes (bigshots and mafiosos) couldn't push him around. Michael wanted to be an emperor and to have sons to carry on his royal lineage. This question is a no-brainer to me. Vito is the Godfather.

Vito Corleone was born Dec. 7th. At the end of Godfather II, when you see the old family getting together (with Sonny still alive), Mike announces he signed up for the Military. Mike did this because the Japanese had just bombed Pearl Harbor. That was December 7th, 1941. While I won't use the derogatory term Sonny used to described the Japanese, he did say "the nerve of them. And on Pop's birthday too." Pop was Vito Corleone. And if you meant Happy Birthday to Marlon Brando, his birthday was earlier; April 3rd, 1924 to be exact. 😀

The problem with Fredo was that he was smart, but he was also weak. He was blinded by ambition in that he wanted what he hadn't earned. Instead of learning from his mentors in Las Vegas, he treated himself to entitlements like fooling around with waitresses who were supposed to be working. Therefore, he threw away the opportunity to prove himself. Michael did earn what he had by paying high prices like the deaths of Apollonia and his daughter. Michael - had to do the same to some extent yes, but had the benefit of already being in a country where he grew up in and to some extent accepted. He was given privileges through his father’s sacrifice and had an example of how to move. I give the edge to Vito as IMO he was loved and feared. While IMO Michael was feared. I also look at the way they both handled mistakes made by Fredo. Vito was shot 5 times and almost died while under Fredo's "protection" but there is no indication of any resentment by Vito against Fredo. Michael was betrayed by Fredo. However Fredo was duped by Roth and said he did not know Roth would try to kill Michael. Yet Michael could not put the betrayal behind him and forgive Fredo and eventually had him killed. That killing haunted Michael later in life. He would have been better off handling Fredo as Vito did.

I agree 100%. Vito was more analytical than he gets credit for, most things he learned through trial and error like you say, or watching others. It's all he had.

I vote that Vito was the Godfather and Michael was the Don. Two different titles for two different types.

🤔🤔🤔 VITO'S STORY WAS MUCH DEEPER!!!...HOWEVER, MICHAEL DID SOME CRUCIAL SHIT TO MAKE HIS SELF FELT!!!...💞💪💯

Totally agree CM with Vito as the winner. Vito did start it all pretty much on his own in a pretty tough environment fraught with pitfalls. Michael had Vito to advise him...a huge and powerful advantage. Michael built upon what Vito initially established but he take some bigger losses. Even though Vito lost his son in a costly war, Michael did lose his family in many ways, something that would have been inconceivable to the don. Vito was much more in touch with everyone being seen as compassionate man, jovial and approachable. He was successful in achieving that very difficult balance of being loved and feared. Michael was feared not so much loved.

Vito built his empire. He was respected , he ciuld be reasonable or ruthless. Michael inherited the family. He had to prove he had the same tenacity and intelligence as his father . Michael lost a fiancee, his marriage to kay and even fredo who betrayed him- his actions haunting him despite fredos deception

Michael did everything Sonny wanted to do, but he did it in a more calculated way. Vito made the entire family and grew it to the powerful force it was before Michael took over. Michael had both his father and Sonny in him as they were both dons. Michael is the greater Don because he had everything.

I love how the portrayal of Michael’s character took of the intelligence and patience of Vito, but especially in part II showcased Michael’s weaknesses. The fact that he became less of a family man, even striking Kay crossed the line, in addition to ordering the hit on his own brother Fredo, due his misusing him. Fredo might have been a traitor, but he had to have felt abandoned by the family, which was reflected brilliantly in the 1st movie during the scene with Moe Green when he didn’t even know that Tom was no longer the consigliere, his own father was semi-retired and that Michael had stepped over him as head of the family. No doubt Johnny Ola and Hyman Roth used that to influence him, probably even offering him some fake promises if he helped whack Michael in attempt to destroy the Corleone empire.

Let me put it this way: if I had to face one of them, I'd go with Vito. Vito has clear lines he won't cross. Michael doesn't, and regularly does things Vito would be appalled by.

Also as the video points out, Vito would actually try to earn my respect. Michael would see me as a pawn.

This was an awesome video of analyzing both dons. I had always envisioned Don Vito as being the model for any caporegime. To answer your question at the end, (honestly with my temper), I’d end up being more of a Sonny than a ruthless Michael, a calculating Vito, or a half-wit Fredo. You got to give me SOME CREDIT: I was also born dirt poor, no real parents, I also served in the military, and I have the calculated analysis needed to: strike when needed; meaning I honestly don’t give a $H*T if I have to kill somebody to get my point across. Hence: I’m SONNY!!! RIP: James Caan.

It's not really a debate. In legit business, startup artists often can't run and maintain the exploding size of their new business. Large corporate managers rarely could build the company they control. In this fictional account, it appears they both could startup and maintain. So they are just different and primarily able to adapt to the current situation.

A quote from the dark knight "you either die as a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villian." This quote is applicable to all the great characters (even Michael Corleone) except vito because his concious was hundred percent on right place. No matter what happened with him but he never went ruthless like Michael. If you have read the book you will realise that even small decisions taken by vito was so thoughtful he never got carried away be it friendship ot revenge

Vito had a sense of morality, "however twisted it may have been", he believed in the church, and in strong family ties, had a code of ethics, and had there were certain things he would not do. He believed in respect and honor. Michael on the other hand was brought up to believe in these things but saw the old ways slipping away. This moral code that helped keep Vito grounded, Michael didn't have, and led to his sadness and depression.

michael was better than vito just as vincent was better than michael but again had vito not prompted michael about the barzini meeting he might not have been able to see a trap there vincent was not featured for long enough to be able to bear a comparision with the 2 dons before him however vincent saved michael's life from joey zasa's helicopter attack

For me its Vito. Vito started from scratch and became the Godfather. Michael, on the other hand, inherited Vito's massive empire and needed guidance from Vito himself to succeed in his early stage of becoming boss. You could even say that had Vito not advised Michael against going to the meeting with Barzini, Michael might have went and got killed
