Uh, nice quote, but last time i checked Honda engines had crankshafts, pistons, connecting rods, oil pumps, oil sumps/pans, cylinder heads, valves and pretty much everything else a conventional internal combustion chamber engine has - all of which someone else designed and built. Hence, Honda imitated it ALL.

Oh I agree and I personally LOVE Honda anything. I drive a Civic Si and have garden implements powered by Honda engines. I also have owned my share of Honda motorcycles including a CR250 (fast!). Always LOVED Honda products and deeply respected Soichiro Honda. I just mean his quote is a little silly in terms of imitating. No one can avoid that. No one can start from absolute scratch. I've actually spent quite a bit of time in Japan. There's an old saying amongst visitors there: The Japanese aren't so great at inventing things thermselves - but they are unequaled at making existing designs better. That's the embodiment of what Honda accomplished.

drott150 What you say is true about the Japanese loyalty to integrity and passion as craftsmen. They are also good students of design and innovation. The only thing I would say is that 99.5% of people don't design new products out of thin air but some of us do. Inventors do exist. We are!

Considering Toyota started producing one of the most powerful non US engines (2jzGTE) in racing back in the late 80's early 90's. With stock motors capable of 1000whp and built factory blocks seeing 1500-2000whp. I would rather Toyota just build another real sports car. The only other non-us motor I can think of coming close is VR38 by Nissan.

I have both Honda and Toyota. I have a 2008 Honda civic si, and a 2004 Toyota Tacoma. They are a bit older so I can talk about them. The civic never fails me never ever once let me down. All I do to the civic is tires, oil, gas and battery. As for the Toyota, that thing is a beast ! nearly 200,000 miles of hard brutal work (I'm in construction and sites are not spick and span) and the thing starts up like the first day I bought it, just like the Honda, it only requires tires, oil, gas and battery. I still have those two vehicles today. In time obviously I upgraded to a Lexus GS as my weekend drive with my wife and kids and got a Honda pilot for the family as daily week driving and both of them are luxurious (even though the pilot is not Acura it is honda, I still consider the pilot suv a very luxurious vehicle) and both to be awesome vehicles too ! Mercedes and BMW may look nice up front brand new in the showroom, but after a year of wear its not worth it. Toyota and Honda are the true "the best or nothing" they are the best plain and simple.

Was it a manual or automatic on the Civic SI you own? Those gen Honda's and Acura's had transmission issues with their 5 speed automatic. The manual has issues with gear synchro's and clutch release issues. I had full of problems when I had an '06 Acura TL 6 speed manual and the door rattled like crazy and ready to fall apart at 10k miles from brand new. The engine was really good though it ran silky smooth trouble-free.

It's interesting to me how much love there is for Hondas, we've had really bad luck in our family with them. My Wife had a civic and we had to put over $5,000 into keeping that car running after it hit 120k miles. Her brother's CRV broke down all the time after about the same point, and her other brother is currently having issues with his CRV. Meanwhile my Matrix and my wife's Camry are both over 160k miles, and the most trouble we've had with these is her Camry draining batteries.

I previously had a Honda Accord with 260k miles. Only problems over the life was an alternator replacement, starter replacement, and an A/C leak. Routine maintenance was the key. After that was an Acura Integra GSR that had 235k miles while with me. Only non-routine maintenance was radiator replacement, rear bearing replacement, and the electronic component that was basically the coil.

honda made the piston rings for the zero fighter plane. I remember in the early 70s when US automakers were crying that they could not meet the clean air standards. Honda was already selling a 3 valve/cylinder engine that exceeded all the air standards as well as got great mileage, etc. I bought my 1966 honda CB450 motorcycle from long beach honda in long beach calif. it had 27 cubic inches and put out 43 horsepower. I drove it at 105mph a LOT. put 68k on it before selling it to a friend, he then sold it to one of his brothers. I would not be surprised if it is still going somewhere. run it hard and fast all day and NOTHING went wrong ever. No wonder japan took over the vehicle business. they EARNED it. How sad that our manufactures can NOT Compete.

Well to be fair most cars in America at that time had big v8's as American's drove big cars. This is because we have straight wide roads in most of America so there was no need to have a small nimble fuel efficient car till the 1973 oil crisis began. Ever since then small cars got more and more popular but the gas hog truck market still dominates

I wish they would go back to having engine oil coolers, it was a small radiator that cooled the oil. I think it prolongs the life of the engine. I'm also not crazy about plastic radiators, they tend to crack and really can't be repaired like the old ones made of metal. Maybe the car companies are saving money building them this way I dont know.

Back in 1992 my Grandfather went to the dealership, interested in buying a '92 Honda Accord LX. Tried to talk to the salesman down a little, but he wouldn't budge. He hung out for several hours checking out the car. The salesman told him that he couldn't bring the price down any. So my Grandfather went home and returned the next day and told the same salesman he was still interested in the car, but still the same reply, they couldn't come down quite as much as he had hoped. So my Grandfather hung out for a few more hours and the salesman talked to the manager and said, "Look, this guy is going to buy this car right now if we can come down a little more." So the salesman came down to my Grandfathers price and he bought the car right there and then. He took great care of the car and in the summer of 2001 he passed the car along to my Dad, who also took great care of the car. Then in 2003, the Accord became my older sister's learner car before she bought her own. Then, in 2005, my Dad got a new car and the Accord became my daily driver. 4 years after that, the Accord became my younger brother's car, and then in the summer of 2012, with all the kids out of the house, the Accord had just over 300k miles on it, the engine running very strong, but the transmission was shifting roughly, and there was a little body damage from a suicidal deer, sold the car for $700 to a Honda enthusiast who fixed it up. I still see it driving around the area when I'm back visiting my parent's house. Amazing cars.

Toyota’s 2.2L is simply marvelous. I have a 1998 Camry with a little over 270,000 miles on it. All I have ever done to this car is VERY basic maintenance. Regular oil changes, air filter, tires, etc. well about a week ago, I went to turn the key and nothing! What the...??? My precious baby never does this, so I ran through a mental checklist of everything that could be wrong. After 10 or so minutes of checking the basic stuff, I did a Google search and discovered the Camry has an anti-theft system built into the switch where I turn my key. Long story short, I discovered the car was not starting for me because the teeth on my 21 year old OEM key were so worn out that the car thought I was trying to steal it. Thankfully, I had my spare key (with excellent teeth) tucked away under the chassis. I put the spare key with new teeth into the ignition and turned the key and she started up just like always! I will always buy Toyota. ALWAYS.

The way I see it, they both can make impressive engines in their own right. Honda can engineer an engine internally. Above all Honda is an engine maker: they make lawn mower engines, automobile engines, airplane engines, generators, and slew of other types of engines. Toyota, on the other hand, has the resources and money to bring in other companies like Yamaha in their engineering pursuits. Either way, both companies have shown they can do the impossible: make engines that can handle incredible horsepower and still be reliable according to their applications. Honda: Legendary series of high horsepower/liter engines with R.P.M's ranging from 7500-9000 that are the most reliable in the market (I-4 to V6's). The Honda J-series engines, while a SOHC 24V architecture, has beaten the majority of equivalent displacement and more advanced DOHC V6 engines. Not surprisingly, Honda now downplays their horsepower numbers in engines like K24, J35, and K20C variants. What isn't know to the masses is Honda has made some of the most incredible and sought after V8 racing engines in history. They were so sought due to their over-engineered platform that commanded respect for Honda. To keep their technical expertise in engine building, internally, they never sold engines to racing teams but were only leased. Among competing racing teams, the Honda V8's were a nightmare: they got pushed hard and didn't break down. Again, above all, Honda is an engine maker that can rival the best. Honda=engines. Toyota: Their capable of any feat. Their V10, in the LFA, proved to the world that you could build highly exotic engines types with, of course, reliability (Honda/Acure first debuted this feat with the NSX and Toyota followed similarly). Furthermore, the LFA has themost glorious sounding V10, bar none. The 2JZ engine, even now, is the gold standard of reliability. Currently, even now, not even BMW has made an I6 that can rival it's horsepower capabilities and reliability. Toyota, with their current GR engines with sophisticated port/direct engines and advanced variable valve technology, have been the gold standard in NA V6 engines. Toyota, currently, has a new variant of their V6 engine with twin turbo chargers. Soon, they will introduce a 4.0L twin turbocharge V8 producing north of 600 horsepower. One thing is for sure, it will be reliable unlike similar engines from BMW, Mercedes Benz, and Audi.

I can't say I completely agree, but I will agree both make really good cars. My Toyota 4Runner would still be a daily driver if it wasn't declared a total loss after it got rear ended a few years ago. That engine was running strong! Currently, we drive a Honda Pilot that's close to 200K in miles and since we do routine maintenance on it, it wouldn't surprise me if we double that. I prefer those two brands just out of current satisfaction with them. It's always nice to hear that there's way more reasons to be appreciative of these vehicles that goes all the way to the engines being very well made.

Imagine this people. A car where Toyota decided to form a joint venture with Honda and created something that uses a Toyota chassis such as the current GT86/BRZ and only used Honda's K20c1 engine from the new Type R instead of Subaru's FA. Now that would be an incredible car.

You could buy a Toyota and drop a used Honda engine in it from a totaled car. That might just be the best car on the road. Guess the trick is to have the skills or know someone that can make it fit

Or get a 2zz it has toyota's version of vtec

@@fostinator69 toyota licensed, Yamaha built. 2zz was a failed engine buddy. 1zz was pretty bad too, built in buffalo, Virginia. Both these engines were put in the Matrix body as well as other vehicles , many matrixes of which are not around anymore today, they used to be eeeeverywhere. So yeah, there is a reason for that. They break. I can tell you from experience. At least those transmissions are bulletproof

And the build quality of the GT86 is shocking. The dashboard and interior plastics are pathetic quality.

@@jeanferret9497 if you want interior quality you buy a Porche Cayenne....and that's on the conservative side. You can pick one up new for the same cost of a loaded pick-up truck

My dad had a 06 Accord 2L and it has 300km on it and runs/starts like the same day we bought it brand new. We have been buying Hondas ever since.

That's my point that man drives like a demon and it doesn't have a rattle or a shake with instant torque etc no lag from the engine it shocks me every time ... the only thing he did was have it serviced ever 10,000 km and still does to this day. It's a work car btw he recently bought a new Accord last year and while the inside is more 'luxurious' it has more light and gimmicks than anything. But .. the car still feels like a Honda premium where it counts; under the hood.
