I think another thing that really turned people away was not only did those tweets come out during the height of BLM but Normani’s response was super mature and respectful since she was also going through horrible online racism that forced her off of twitter. For Camilla to acknowledge she did it and for people to see she did not defend Normani in her hour of need was all the public needed to know to decide that she was no longer going to get the fame that was once predicted.

From the VMAs laughable performance to her music projects and her "I'm my Own Boss" movie. All I could do was cringe and avoid her projects and future movies. There's a difference between crappy (forgettable) movies and then there's early 2000s campy, self-discovery, self-aware movies that made you question, what's happening? Why is everyone high? Exactly. Those texts were vile as well, and she also disparaged the other members. Even though since most of her tumblr posts centered around racist language around black people, she targeted other POC as well. It's one thing if other's want to forgive her based off of the - for me - insincere apology but for me it's been a wrap since then. Even before the leak she gave off weird energy it seems when interacting with the girls in the group but before that moment I contributed it to management pushing her towards the center of the group causing tension.

Gosh I was so hoping you'd mention the much smaller drama of Camila seemingly copying Charli XCX's whole vibe from 2015-2017, like that whole coked out supermodel/cool-girl/party til the sun rises in East London aesthetic Charli popularized, the same vibe one gets from reading Julia Fox's autobiography (Charli and Julia are friends so it clocks, hence the line "I'm everywhere I'm so Julia"). The biggest comparison for months was that "I Luv It" has a similar cadence and beat to Charli's "I Got It" but just way faster, like if Alvin and the Chipmunks covered Charli's song. And then on top of that, the album coming is called C,XOXO. It's just SO close to CXCX, and it's theorized that it's Camila whom Charli is talking about in Von Dutch, when she says "It's so obvious I'm your #1." Charli was a huge part of the rise of hyperpop when nobody except a talented few artists were messing around in that field (obviously SOPHIE and Dylan Brady carried the subgenre but Charli is crown princess) so it's interesting that Camila's big rebrand is to drop a couple hyperpop singles, with the hot cokehead London party girl aesthetic, name the album so similar to Charli's call sign... And also Cinderella was SO bad.

"i luv it" directly samples rihanna's "cockiness" which has a similar chorus. i advise you to look at the lyrics to rihanna's. for being her sexy cool girl era, camila really watered down the original so it was tame and pg. inauthentic....

Apart from the past Tumblr posts, I also have a problem with how Camila dealt with Normani being horrendously cyberbullied by her fans to the point that they were photoshopping Normani's face onto images of l*nching. These fans attacked her over some interview clip of Normani describing Camila as "quirky and cute." While the other 5H members were quick to defend Normani, Camila took her sweet time to actually say anything (she ended up being very subtle about it rather than direct), which Normani later said was very hurtful.

as a person who's been a harmonizer for the longest - i think it's super important to also recognize how much the fans likely strained the relationships between the 4 girls and camila. even in their debut era, camila was pushed the most by far and therefore had the biggest and LOUDEST fanbase, that (through personal anecdote) was constantly attacking the other girls and comparing them to camila. most of the narrative about the other girls "hating camila" even while she was in the group was pushed by people who were fans of camila purposefully, in order to separate them. also p.s., the justification for continuing as "fifth harmony" is because they began to call the fans the "fifth" of the group. just a fun fact :)

The reason why Fifth Harmony didn't change their name once Camila Cabello left was because the group already established themselves as Fifth Harmony & I honestly don't think their label would let them change it. 7:00 I would like to add that another reason why Camila Cabello's racist past was controversial was because Camila had collaborated w/ black artists in the past from Dababy to Young Thug to more recently Lil Nas X & also Normani who is Camila's former group member is black & Camila did NOT come out & support Normani when she's was being hated on w/ racist comments.

As someone who loves hyperpop and alt music scenes in general, her new era seems so… soulless? It seems like she only likes the aesthetics of the scenes she’s taken inspiration from. yet again, some bozo here at it with the 'doesn't seem'. stereotypes and prejudices really do be the thing that causes war in the world- it's insanity the amount of comments that dont actually have a reason for why they camila, just the repetitive 'it just seems'. and thinking camila isn't talented is WILD- you have a next level type of ignorance to be ignoring all her very successful singles, and the masterpieces of her previous albums. it might not be everyones taste, but she has more success most of us will ever even have, she's successful for a reason- that is some way does equate to talent.

Huh?” Now it seems worse if it was a comeback from having to apologize for being racist as a teen.

About the racist tumblr posts, Camila's apology was a load of ass because she kept mentioning it was "years ago," However, at the time she was exposed the most recent posts on the account were only a few months old. @@dee12401 You need to re-read my comment. A lot of Camila fans give the bs argument "she said all those bad things years ago when she was 14." That was a made up narrative by Camila because when her secret racist accounts were exposed in 2019, you could see she had still been posting on them recently at that time which meant she was still racist af. She deleted everything and lied that the posts were from years prior when they weren't. Idk if you're a child or something, but by 2019 it was already normalized that being super racist online was generally bad. 5 years ago is not that long ago, and she was in her 20s. Camila Cabello is a great example of a pop star who works perfectly on paper, but not at all in execution. She's a conventionally pretty Latina woman with the potential for international appeal with a unique voice and personality who got her solo career start with years of industry experience/connections already under her belt. She is the kind of aspiring pop star record labels dream about discovering. But all of that can't compensate for the fact that she, ironically, lacks the X Factor. Her voice is irritating as hell. Lots of successful pop singers can't sing, but even in studio recordings, her voice is so shrill and unpleasant to the ears. Weaker singers like Britney Spears and Rihanna know how to utilize their strengths so that even if they're not amazing vocalists, they can sell the shit out of their performances to make for convincing, marketable music that will appease an audience. Camilla though, is just not fun to listen to. She also carries this strange anti-charisma where she does have an identifiable personality, but it's not a good one. Every interview it seems like she embodies the early 2010's millennial white girl stereotype of trying to be as quirky as possible, which was a personality type that inspired rage in people even back then. It comes off so forced. And then her music is just...blah. Havana was a fun song and she might've had more staying power if she recognized what made that song stick and found her lane doing that, but instead she clearly had aspirations to be a singer-songwriter type of artist, which she just does NOT have the chops for. Her songwriting is not good enough to get a mass audience invested, and then combine that with her ear-splitting vocals and often bland production, and you wind up with songs that appeal to absolutely no one. This album cycle seems to be her just throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks after years' worth of diminishing returns releasing music for the sole purpose of appeasing Top 40 radio listeners, but the new image change and songs are so half-baked and sloppy. I honestly don't know if there's anything she can do to get her career back on track because she doesn't have a lot of people in her corner. Usually I can think of some sort of way out of the hole for artists who are in a slump, but for her? I got nothing

If she was 15 around the 2010’s, then she was born in the 90’s a time where it was very filled with racism, misogyny, homophobia and awful stereotypes. And even if it doesn’t seem so far off, the 2010’s were also like this. Lady Gaga was very open of supporting the LGBTQ+ community and people thought she was crazy and would ruin her career, this was 2009-2012. Miley Cyrus was criticized and hated for changing her image during the Can’t be Tamed era, this was 2010, Glee was praised for having a diverse cast and talking about topics that are normally ignored, it was 2009. The 2010’s was a time when things started to change. I’m not defending what Camilla say/did but let’s not act as if 2010 wasn’t filled with ignorance.

Come on, if we can accept that adults in prison can change, I think we should be able to accept that somebody can change from when they were a literal teenager. There’s a reason that people under the age of 18 aren’t typically tried or sentenced as adults. It is entirely possible for somebody to go from, like, white power as a 15 year old to anti racist as an adult. That said…. She didn’t even admit that she was racist so she probably still is to some degree.

Lots of stuff have happened since the things you talked about (and with this i don't mean to say that her being r4cist is a thing of the past and shouldn't be talked about, but rather it should be added on). Because she has started to be significantly more hated on this year, i think it has to do with her new era, her new look, her songs that are quite bad, and how she shows more of her sort of "partying lifestyle" that the public is not as fond of her as they used to before.

This is off topic, but your comment about the use of "era" got me thinking about how a lot of terminology used among pop-culture fans at some point mixed with the K-pop (somewhat J-pop too) twitter community's lingo and are now confusingly used in a way where the word taken from K-pop fans is inherently the same but the usage got confused on the way. I am not saying K-pop fans created these words, many were first used in Western pop-culture, then used in a way that fits K-pop, and when Western pop-culture fans or mainstream media outlets take them back to use they don't realize the meaning has changed: see "stan", "fancam", "edit", "delulu", "anti", and maybe even words like "era" and "comeback".

I'm a fan of Camila's solo music - Havana (at least to me) is one of the most unique songs I've heard and when I first heard it, it was playing on repeat in my playlist for nearly a month. Beautiful, Bad Things, Never Be The Same are also some of my favourite songs ever. Imo everyone has different tastes in music and I resonate with Camila's journey in terms of the quirky awkwardness, trying to find her heritage, and generally I like her music. It's often got a dreamy quality that feels like a movie / fantasy and that's what I like about it. It also helps that I'm in a similar age group and the topics that Camila sings about are all stuff that relates to my life eg. Bam Bam is a comfort song for me and came out during a time when I really needed to hear it. As for the controversial side of Camila - it seems like the haters come from 3 separate things. A) Fifth Harmony fans who like the other girls and not her. B) Her reblogs as a teen on Tumblr C) Some people getting cringed out by her dating Shawn Mendes & the panned Cinderella movie. For me, A isn't a problem because I've never liked Fifth Harmony and the music that came from it - it always felt like all 5 girls barely liked each other and were constantly competing. The Fifth Harmony music felt generic mainstream (whereas Camila's solo stuff has always felt personal and linked to her own experiences). Basically when Camila left Fifth Harmony I didn't have a problem with it at all, and Fifth Harmony eventually breaking up also didn't make me dislike her B is the most problematic one out of the 3 and this is probably a factor that made me question Camila the most. I've scrolled down the Tumblr and it contains disgusting stuff - but Camila didn't make those memes or posts, she reblogged / reposted them. Reblogging is still bad but many people seem to think Camila wrote them or created those memes (which she didn't). It happened when she was a teenager (15ish) and she hasn't done it since, or showed any other racist behaviour since then. After she realised what happened, she has gone to a re-education correction course to fix herself and correct her behaviour. Imo for this one it's something to monitor, if she still does racist things as an adult or continues to do problematic behaviour then yeah I would probably boycott her music. But so far her problematic / racist behaviour seems to be just the reblogs on Tumblr as a teen, and not a pattern that she is continuing as an adult. For C - this one was really weird to me that she got so much backlash over it. Camila and Shawn posted a joke video of them kissing in a purposely awkward way, and for some reason the whole internet went mad over it (it was obviously meant as a joke but everyone seemed to think it was a serious video and kept saying they were bad kissers). And then some portions of the internet seemed convinced that Camila and Shawn were dating only for PR, which is again ridiculous because if you've been following the two it's extremely obvious that they have been in love with each other for years - they've constantly hung out together backstage, just look at the pics of them looking at each other and you can see it. Plus, Camila and Shawn's careers actually took a hit / declined after they started dating. PR is supposed to improve one's career, not derail it. The two stayed together for a hecking long time even after the backlash - if it was PR, they would have called it off much sooner than they ended up doing. As for the Cinderella movie, yeah the trailer looked very bad and I doubt it was a good movie. But one bad movie shouldn't be that controversial - even Taylor Swift ended up in the bad CATs movie and it didn't hurt her career. Basically I don't know why any of the things in this category became controversies and I'm guessing it's mostly people who dislike Camila for A & B, using stuff on C just as reasons to dump more hate because they already dislike her

She at one point was a massive hit and left the rest of Fifth Harmony in the dust. It would have been way more interesting to have this video show her downfall. Like this the video feels kinda uneducated (talking about shawn mendes " who I think she dated at one point" like excuse me? did you even try to make a useful video there are so many controversies alone around that - talking about the toe incident or the time they were making out after breaking up at coachella). This video really left me wondering - what is the actual reasoning nobody talks about Camila, cause the old twitter posts cant be it (looking at Senorita and Havana sucess).

Thank you for explaining the Fifth Harmony stuff. I never paid them much mind and am only finding individual members’ former music now. I had no clue they were on the US X Factor.

I think part of this is that we're not in the era of the "manufactured pop star." a lot of the more popular artists write a lot of their own music and come off as more authentic with more personality. when everything seems like a marketing move to appeal to the masses, it seems like the opposite effect happens. I think she will continue to be famous and have hits here and there, but she might not ever have a die-hard fanbase like other artists.

My problem with Camila, is the lack of personality. Yes, she is a common girl doing mass produce pop but compared to her pears she is just don’t stand out. There’s nothing about Camila style in music or fashion that makes her unique in her craft. Most importantly for being a pop start you need to stand out from the rest by creating your own personal universe and aesthetic around you and your music. Something that sadly she has never been able to achieve successfully. Lady Gaga first era established her has a character of pop culture that we still talk about this day. Britney Spears was her baby voice and juxtaposition of childlike fashion with a sexy edge. Halsey was her distinctive blue locks with her pop synth rhythm with melancholic lyrics, Hayley Williams from Paramore her edgy pop punk sound with rebellious lyrics and crazy outside the box hair colours and the list goes on… Besides Habana and Señorita she is easily forgettable in the industry has an individual.

I feel like if Camila stuck to Latin music and focused more on the latin-american music scene, she'd make it big. Her spanish songs were good.

You missed a whole bunch of stuff out that is so integral to her reputation, like the copy paste plagiarism which she has been guilty of numerous times. She literally stole an album art concept from Pang by Caroline Polachek, and it wasn’t just one aspect of the art style…the album booklet layout, the typeface for the track listing and lyrics, and the overall theming and design for the album along with one of its singles.
