In this video, Dr. Brubaker answers in more detail the criticisms leveled against him and his academic work by Yasir Qadhi on November 25, 2020. He begins by pointing out that some of the criticisms are recycled, having been developed by apologists and polemicists over the past year. Qadhi himself, in his critique, referenced a parody Twitter account displaying cherry-picked photographs of mistakes in Brubaker's 2014 doctoral dissertation.
With grace, Dr. Brubaker answers the general concerns and points out that the heavy spotlight on occasional mistakes in the form of a wrongly-parsed Arabic verb, or a suboptimal translation choice (all the sort of things that will exist in any doctoral dissertation - - and indeed even occasionally in published books that are otherwise excellent), while not unimportant, are largely irrelevant to the bigger picture.
Brubaker notes that he is unaware of anyone who has found fault with him for misidentifying a chapter and verse of a correction or a variant, misidentifying the portion of skeletal text (Arabic: "rasm"), and so forth. Indeed, the only thing that comes close is one of the items that Yasir Qadhi mentions: the mistaking of a red Arabic "lam-he" in his dissertation for the word "lahu," when it actually was a number according to the Arabic "abjad" numbering system. But this is old news, and Brubaker was aware of that for years.
Among the thousands of actual corrections he has documented are some that are the result of mere scribal error, others the result of developing orthography, and others (Brubaker believes) that are the result of true textual variations that were later drawn toward conformity with each other via physical correction.
Brubaker makes the suggestion that criticisms of important but non-central details (such as word choice in translation, occasional incorrect verb parsing, or pronunciation), in the way often expressed by Qadhi and others, are not only a diversion, but also a form of ad hominem attack, presented as an plea for hearers to discredit Brubaker as an authority in his area of research.
In the latter part of this video, Brubaker shows and talks through Yasir Qadhi's response to the email Brubaker sent him on November 26. Key topics include:
"islamophobia" and "islamophobe" as terms of rhetoric and (indeed) of cowardice
Whether discussion or consideration of ultimate concerns (i.e. theology and other matters that are beyond the reach of science) have a place in the academy (Brubaker suggests that the pursuit of truth via science and reason may legitimately include consideration of such things)
Who has biases? Everyone. In good academic work, it is important to recognize and account for biases.
Left largely unaddressed in this video are the matters of the legitimacy and worthiness of a PhD from Rice University in this area. It was inadvertently omitted during recording, is mentioned in text on-screen at the appropriate point, but will be discussed in a little more detail (plus some other addenda) in a short follow-up video in the next few days.

Dan, a very kind response to an individual who has become increasingly dishonest and even threatening. You’re a patient person. It’s interesting that Qadhi claims to be generally likable, while also false-flagging channels and publicly threatening an owner of another channel. That makes his comment about not wanting to be two-faced, two-faced.

If it wasn't for knowing about Yasir's, Mo Hijab's and your (if you are indeed Ali Dawah) threats against other people, I'm sure most of us would find you likeable enough and might even imagine enjoying a good laugh and bit of banter on subjects unrelated to Islam (maybe not so Ijaz and Farid as they're quite one-dimensional), so we do actually want see you and other muslims come to Christ, as the only way to your salvation. Wait, wait, wait. Dr. Brubaker does selective interviews and his material is used quite often by Christian apologists, so that means he is non-academic, theologically biased, and "repugnant". Examining the other side, there are various videos of Dr. Qadhi on youtube of him engaging in non-academic religious work (education for the layperson, religious instruction, etc.), he is interviewed by Muslim apologists (like Mohammed Hijab) for the benefit of common Muslims, and his works were (until the "holes in the narrative" gaffe) widely used by Muslim polemicists - but Qadhi is still academically pure and without theological biases? This is either some next level projection, or just pure, unbridled hypocrisy.

The “you don’t know Arabic” argument is so stupid and suicidal. The vast majority of Muslims are from non Arabic backgrounds. So in order to understand Islam, which is supposedly the truth, you have to understand Arabic? Well that means all the Muslim translators of the Quran are a bunch of liars hiding the disgusting truth of Islam. It’s actually the opposite, if you speak Arabic you can destroy Islam more easily, however it’s not necessary. Islam falls apart very quickly just by scratching the surface of what’s available in English (which is a tiny percentage of all the Islamic sources).

@@pa21thebeast Yeah throughout the email I just keep thinking of Qahdi's public statement of the red line which he will not cross, this is a frank admission that he must inject his biases into his work , which no serious academic should do , and to admit you do is self defeating on peoples perception of your credibility. I'd like to feel sympathy for him being in a difficult place but this smearing of Dan's work and ethics makes that impossible, it shows again Qahdi's academic values are misplaced.

He seems to suffer from narcissistic personality disorder; in that he’s honest because he cannot help but reveal how much knowledge he has, even though he knows his knowledge is supposed to be a secret. What’s fascinating is that he’s already exposed his current knowledge is more than enough to destroy most Muslim’s faith in Islam, but if he goes any deeper he would destroy his own faith. Any logical person would conclude that he’s admitting Islam has large problems.

@@pa21thebeast You are likely aware but just in case , there is a history preceding Qahdi's recent fluff, where he was in an private email circle and he talked of his academic studies leading him to doubts, the mails were leaked by one of the members and that itself caused similar drama to what we are seeing today. His public backtrack from that was necessary obviously , his credibility with the Ummh is more important than his intellectual and academic honesty , but if this backtrack was sincere I have my doubts. Like today, his backtracks are an arse covering exercise , I doubt they are sincere. He reminds me of pastors who have become atheists but given their livelihoods depend on their work , and their lack of skills to do any other work , they stay trapped in what amounts to a deceit. Qahdi's tactics in defending himself are as formulaic as any low hanging Muslim fruit, denial of intellectual credibility in their interlocutor, dismissal by using ad hom of calling your interlocutor a bigot, and demeaning ridicule. it must be in a pamphlet every Muslim must get on how to react to criticism of Islam.
@pa21thebeast

@@tdsdave yeah I was aware of the email. It was leaked by Farid in 2016, by a Muslim apologists who ironically later asked Mohammed Hijab to ask Qadhi the question that created the fiasco, then the same Farid tried to refute Qadhi and get other people to destroy Qadhi. As far as covering his arse, that pamphlet is the sharia. Everything he’s doing is guidance from the Sharia, including hiding things, threatening others, and refusing to interact with Christians. What Farid and other Muslims are doing is what happened in the 8th and 9th centuries. He was never an academic, his academic pursuits were just to feed his ego, now it’s coming back to bite him. His ego is too honest while his eman is secretive. Academia forces him to expose things that could expose Islam. I believe when he first started he thought he would be able to find evidence that supports the Islamic narrative, but as he kept digging, the hole was getting bigger so he had to take a step back and put on his Islamist hat. He realized if he didn’t dig others would dig, so the email in 2016 was a warning. In the email he said that the qiraats and Ahruf prove the fore founders (scholars) of Islam were not infallible, which if you understand sharia makes him an apostate, and is why people are calling him murtad. I’m confident he believes heavily in islam but is no longer in Islam.

Speaking many languages doesn’t make the Quran valid or invalid. The Arabic language has been preserved since 1400 years and before that, and the Quran is in the heart of man. If what you claiming is true bring anyone who entirely memorized any scripture except the QURAN. Jews, Christian, budist, hindusim, etc bring one person who memorized the whole book. If that is not the case than you wonder why Muslims enjoy and thier religion. Keep what you have and leave for others what they have, the judgment day will come whether you believe it or not. What are you going to gain pointing this word was wrong or this was right nothing. Muslims from China to Africa, Russia to middle east read the same Quran, so don’t waste your time there is no book that almost two billion people read the same way.

@@nasserhameed3828 Thank you. I believe it is important to consider that God has not (in my understanding) made people robots, even when it comes to the later transmission of authentic revelation. By analogy, if someone delivers a perfect speech and it is written down word for word but then copied wrong by someone else later on, the fault is not with the speaker. Christians have understood this for quite some time, and biblical textual criticism has generally focused upon finding what was first written. Best to you, and I appreciate the engagement. I am glad you appreciate my work and what you observe about me is what I intend to project to the world, so it is gratifying to hear that from you. This said, I also appreciate those who engage in apologetics or polemics (on any side of these questions or others), so long as they are honest. Even ridicule (if honest) can serve an important function. It is a different style of discussion than I have chosen, but I am a big advocate for robust and free speech, and I believe that it is healthy to protect it for everyone, even if it can be messy and makes some uncomfortable. Thanks for the question. Reading the old manuscripts is not always "effortless," even now, but it is routine. Learning was like anything: a little at a time, learning by doing. The old manuscripts are different from Qurans in use today in the shape and appearance of some/many of the letters, the way (and extent) to which diacritics are applied (these are partially or completely absent in some of the earliest Quran manuscripts), the short vowels (when they are written), and so forth. The standard work on the script styles is Déroche, "The Abbasid Tradition." There is much more to be said on this. Perhaps I will do a few videos on reading the old scripts. Best, DB

As a scholar his only recourse is to undermine your Christian biases or yourself personally. Your scholarly work stands for itself. And the attack of islamaphobe. Not only is it an engineered word for today's Muslims. It is patently untrue. A phobia as I understand it ,is an irrational fear of something. Seeking the truth should be fearless. So, you are operating on an academic level, you sound like my professors from College and Law School. As soon as you started talking about your area of study, I could tell this is your passion ....no axe to grind. Excellent videos. Interesting.

It is a standard criticism, leveled at non-native Arabic speakers who take a more critical approach. Thank you for recognizing the disconnect.

Dr. Brubaker I’m sorry this is happening to you. You certainly don’t deserve this attack, you’re a intelligent, thoughtful and precise professional expert in your field. All you have done is followed where your research took you, and then reported on it. I will be praying for you, God bless you, keep up the good work

In one of his recent videos, YQ called the Trinity "morally repugnant". Should we call him a "Christophobe" for that remark?
