First flat white I tried in the UK was about 3-4 years ago at a Pret-A-Manger, of all places. Started really getting into them a couple of years ago. For me (as a milk no sugar guy) they have the optimal balance of coffee, milk, mix and texture. Cortados are great too. I do diversify with others (e.g. pour over) but a flat white is my main go-to.

for me a flat white is based on a shorter double shot (f.ex. 18 g in 30 g out), the milk is pulled till 26 degrees Celsius and rolled up to 50 degrees to keep it more fluid, served in a 150 ml cup, latte art optional :-)

@Wholelattelovepage7 жыл бұрын
BWWGL9 congrats on the grinder! Hard to give an exact setting number. Variables like coffee type and dose weight will affect grind size. Start in the espresso range, pull a shot and time it. You want it in a 20-30 second range from first drip. Use the double shot single wall filter basket. That’s the standard non-pressurized basket. From that, you want 2oz/60ml in the 20-30 seconds. If it’s coming too fast, grind finer and try again. Too slow, grind a little coarser and repeat. As you go though this process of “dialing in”, keep the coffee dose and other variables like tamping pressure consistent.

Hi CL, Many call it a wet cappuccino. Depends where you go but most people (especially high-end cafes in US) are making capps with a very fine latte style froth - like you'll see latte art on a capp. Key difference between a flat white/wet capp and latte is the espresso to milk ratio. Typically a double shot in FW and cap and single in a latte. Marc

Just thought i'd let you know that this is the American interpretation. An Australian and New Zealand flat white is a single shot espresso in a standard tulip cup (cappuccino cup) with no foam at all, hence the 'flat' part of the name. It is often not filled all the way to the top of the cup because the lack of foam would make it very easy to spill. I have no idea where this mis translation has come from. I feel like Starbucks probably made it up. Src: i'm a barista in Melbourne Australia
@kaylackattack9 жыл бұрын
That's what I assumed! At my coffee shop in America, people order "flat" lattes all the time. Just espresso and steamed milk, but no foam. Never heard of it being called "flat white" until I went to Starbucks. Interesting...
@waltersteinmann87889 жыл бұрын
I agree I live in Australia- I agree with TurnipRecords. Americans don't like it when someone else does something better than they. They have to change it so it is their version, then keep the original name and say they invented it. Could you imagine American rules AFL?

Hi a, Thanks for the question. 2oz/60ml is a liquid volume approximation for those not using a scale. Sounds like you are using a scale which is far more accurate! Not unusual to extract a 1:2 ratio from 18g of ground coffee and have an initial in cup volume of 60ml or more if the crema is included in the measurement with a weight at 36g. What you should do is forget about the liguid measurement and stick with weight. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi, thanks for your comment! Thought the con leche was made with strong coffee - not espresso and scalded milk?
@chaoticdog858 жыл бұрын
+Whole Latte Love that is why I added the " from spain " part. most of Latin America has their versions but in spain they poured a small shot of espresso and brought the steamed milk to your table and then added the steamed milk in front of you. I've been looking up what we would call it here, and according to your description video, it's called flat white...soooo how did aussies invent this in the 80 if it's just espresso and steamed milk with out foam?
@Wholelattelovepage8 жыл бұрын
chaoticdog85 Right... Many drinks are very similar and there are variations depending on location and barista. Espresso and steamed milk could be considered a latte (technically a cafe latte) as well. Big difference with a flat white for most is it typically uses a 2:1 milk to espresso ratio while a latte is often a 5:1 ration. That 2:1 ratio is similar to a cappuccino. Also, latte milk and cappuccino milk are frothed a little differently. Capp milk is airier than milk for a latte. What the Aussies/NZ's take credit for is basically making a capp with latte style milk - why some call them a wet cappuccino.

@Wholelattelovepage7 жыл бұрын
Hi 68404, I hear you. US tried back in the 1970's when I was in elementary school and it didn't work out. It is the standard in the US scientific community. We do try to include metric measurements in most of our videos and always refer to grams when talking coffee doses. For liquid volumes ounces to ml is very easy 30ml = 1 ounce. It's actually 29.5735ml = 1oz but what's .4375ml between friends? For temperature we do try to give centigrade as well - been getting better at that in our more recent videos. But, when we get into brew temps, I actually prefer Fahrenheit as it has >2x the resolution of centigrade.

I will forgive espresso now that I know what a cappuccino is as of today - it is 67%not coffee - in other words a third that, and a third milk and a third foam. Isnt that gross? A drink which is 67% milk and foam? And fattening too probably. The introduction of the flat white is not a better idea. There is EVEN MORE calories in the flat white than in the cappuccino. That had 120. The flat white has 220. Thats a way to go!
@Wholelattelovepage9 жыл бұрын
John Bilsbury Different strokes for different folks. Flat Whites are typically 2 parts espresso to 3 parts steamed milk. That's about 2oz. espresso to 3oz. milk. Milk expands when properly steamed. Not sure how you are getting 220 calories from 3 oz of milk.
@JB-sz4wy9 жыл бұрын

I was just wondering about the difference between "cortado" and "flat white", I agree "cortado" has less milk, so the taste of coffee is stronger. My favorite one ☕

Yet another program using stupid Imperial measurements. Please show us the metric equivalents. Thanks.
@Wholelattelovepage8 жыл бұрын
Sorry, that's what's common in the US. In the nearly 2 years since this video was made, we have made an effort to include metric measurements in all our videos.

This is not how we (in Australia) drink flat whites,,,,,,

+Stephanie Nelkovski Hi Stephanie, please tell us how you do. Any differences in how they're made depending on cafe?

There was no mention here of Ristretto or what it is. I thought that was the whole idea behind a flat white. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm perusing youtube looking for how a flat white is made.

J Quiznos Hi JQ, There are different interpretations depending on where you go, but in general it's cafe latte style milk froth at 2:1 ratio with espresso. Think Starbucks marketing started the ristretto thing when they jumped on the FW bandwagon a year or so ago. As far as we know ristretto is not a thing in the origin of the flat white.

Well thank you! I don't really know anything about coffee so it's good to see where other coffee houses stand on this. I'm just doing research to know how it's made. I've had a flat white from Starbizzle as well as a local place close to me and they taste VERY different (sweet vs bitter). In my search for the definition of a flat white, I've found many say it's supposed to be slightly sweet, without the addition of any sweeteners. Is this correct?
@Wholelattelovepage8 жыл бұрын
J Quiznos You are welcome. Heating and frothing the milk increases the apparent sweetness without the addition of added sugar etc. Milk temperature is critical however. We recommend 140 - 150F to get the best flavor from milk. Go much hotter and the sweetness quickly fades. Those newer to milk based espresso beverages often insist that a latte capp etc be as hot as a straight cup of black coffee. If made that hot flavor is not good. Can't tell you how many bad cafes take milk way to hot!

Old imperial units... Old, old...

Hi Jan, Thanks for the comment and I hear you! Here in the US we kinda of sort of use metric for many things but not all. I was a kid in the 1970's when it was pushed in schools and failed in widespread adoption. In most of our videos we now include both imperial and metric measurements in order to better serve our worldwide audience. If my choice I'd prefer that US was totally metric! Sorry we missed including in this video. Marc

@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks, you right - best way to go is use both systems. Your great video deserves to be widely understood.
