Sounds like part of Newey’s pay rise is shares in Aston F1. “Job” title of Technical Managing Partner could be a free hand in submitting ideas for the car and not having a line manager or needing to directly manage anyone. He’ll likely engage with Fallows, Krack & Cowell directly at the factory & track. Sweet gig 😸

Also, this should definitely trigger a review of the cost cap exemption (and maybe dev time) rules. For £20 million you can hire: 1 OAP, 100 extremely capable engineers at 200k per year or 400 extremely capable engineers at £50k per year. There's one option I definitely wouldn't choose, but it's the only one the rules allow. I would also include drivers in the cap. Pick 2: Newey, Alonso, an adequately staffed engineering department. That would make things a lot more interesting. But there would definitely be a lot of loopholing with sponsor work etc. Probably a lot of driver hopping too, with top drivers jumping to teams who spent heavily on development in previous years. That could reduce the prevalence of iconic driver/team associations.

People thinking with their head knew it was Aston Martin and not Ferrari months ago. He wasn't going to move to Italy, he want's more power in the department than he would have gotten over there, he loves working with Honda, which is now a Works provider at Aston. Plus Alonso is one of two drivers he wants to work with. Easy win for Aston.

I’m actually a believer that Alonso doesn’t give great feedback on a car. Teams he goes to always tend to have a dip after he’s been there a year or two. Still a top 5 driver of all time, and I truly hope they can succeed together

People trying to say FA made bad team moves are parroting an old/false trope: He’s only made one bad choice. 1. His move from Renault to McLaren was timed perfectly. 2. He didn’t chose to go back to Renault. 3. Ferrari was the best available option on the table and he’s a couple BS penalties and a Grosjean from winning 2 WDCs there. 4.The bad choice was McLaren, but the media all thought would be hot stuff w/Honda, @ 5: He didn’t have a choice of who to return with (Alpine) and 6. He made the right decision to ditch them for Astons. So, what are all these bad moves?

Why would Alonso have to stay past the end of his contract? Newey will be designing the 2026 car and he has the option to stay through 2027.

An option isn't a guarantee. So, he would need to choose to stay beyond the end of 2026. As for Newey designing the 2026 car, he doesn't start until March (2 months into the process), they may not get it right for the first year and we don't yet know how 'hands on' Newey will be - I assume very 'hands on' but who knows for sure? We'll find out soon enough.

@@The_ZeroLine No, it isn't the exact opposite. Alonso is notorious for his difficult team transitions. He was sacked by McLaren due to an incident that's tainted his career. Leaving Ferrari at the worst possible time, after one bad season, to return to McLaren for a disastrous stint. The move to AM was more a last ditch gamble than a moment of inspiration. I'm a big fan of his, but only the most ardent sycophants would bend reality to suit a glorious career arc. Even this AM move is unlikely to work out, sadly, he's got a very limited amount of time in the sport left. The signing of Newey is for Lawrence Stroll's son.

Would be interesting if someone plotted (non-Ferrari, non-Toyota, for reasons) team spending vs success. I suspect the correlation is extremely high. Newey is easily the most overrated F1 man in 30 years. Respect for securing the bag and fading into the sunset instead of retiring at the top, I guess. Will be interesting to see the mental gymnastics from his fans if "he fails" to turn their fortunes around. Back to blaming Lawrence, probably.
