At the recently concluded Olympic Games, we saw Jamaica dominate the female sprints copping 6 medals up to the relays. In this video we examine why the small island continue to dominate the Sport of Athletics.

I share your sentiment Richard. This talk about Americans have a choice to go on to other sports is completely rubbish. Name me another sport other than track and field that is there for females I'm America for speedy children. The undeniable fact is that where Jamaicans are children with Jamaican heritage may be in the world and they are fit for track and field, then you can look out for a superstar. The speed is genetic. Sanya Richards, Inga Miller, Asher Smith, Linford Christie, and a few other sure did not have a single thing to do with the Jamaican program but still they are all superstar athletes. It's much more than the sport program offered in Jamaica.

I am from Jamaica the children are train to run from the basic school level and the community and parents are very supportive especially on sports day so when they start primary school they are observed by the coach and encourage to run for their school. The biggest sports in Jamaican school is track and field, they compete against their club house then the regional schools and then to stadium in Kingston where all parish meet

Thanks for your commentary. One factor is our boys and girls high school championships held annually simply called "Champs". This is extremely competitive and where many athletes get their start. Now we even have a boys and girls preparatory/primary schools championships where children as young as 6 years old compete at our national arena. This is unique.
If we had the resources to juice up our athletes am sure we would find better use for it to use to help us more economically to help the masses. Simply put,we can't afford it because it would be a waste of scarce resources.

Let us not forget the legends of Jamaican sprinting in the 1948 and 1952 Olympics. Herb McKenley, Arthur Wint and George Rhoden mined gold, and silver medals in those games. Jamaica got gold and silver in the 400m and medaled in the relays and 100m too. So many journalists are writing about Jamaican sprinting prowess as if it just began since Merlene Ottey. Please do not forget Donald Quarrie also. We were always good at the 1/4 mile (400m) not just the short sprints. Remember Bertland Cameron too. This video article was not bad but more research needed to be done before arriving at that conclusion.

While well-intentioned, this video has ignored the 20 ton elephant in the room. In the 1960s and 1970s, the East German and the Soviet "women" dominated women's sprinting. In the 1980s and 1990s, American women dominated women's sprinting. Then the drug testing methodology got better. It is no wonder that Sha'Carri deliberately sabotaged her Olympic appearance, because whatever helped her run sub 11.1-second 100m times, would have been detected by WADA. Since then, the African and Caribbean women have began to dominate women's sprinting, and will continue to do so. Because sprinting at the world and Olympic level has managed to weed out the cheaters. So it is no coincidence, now that African and Caribbean women are competing in "clean" field. Can you believe that in the 1970s, the Bulgarian women's 4x100m team smoked the Jamaican women's team. Where are the Bulgarian women sprinters nowadays? Did Bulgaria suddenly not have the resources to continue training their female athletes? Poor Merlene Ottey, always got Bronze, because she competed clean against other women who weren't.

There are a lot of holes in your argument, but I will start with the question; how do you explain the U.S. dominance in sprinting before drugs existed. The U.S. did not become good in the 1980s, they were always good. Also, you are a fool if you think there is something intrinsically unique about Jamaicans that makes them incapable of cheating. The morals of a Jamaican is no greater or lesser than a human being anywhere else.
@HH-mw4sq2 жыл бұрын
@@therealscoobydoo - I was speaking about women's sprinting, more specifically the 100m. Since you clearly don't know the Olympic history of the US women in sprinting, allow me to rearrange your ignorance on that topic. The US got its first Olympic gold medal in women's sprinting in the 1928 Olympics, and its second in the 1936 Olympics. Jamaica sent its first woman to the Olympics in 1964. The next Olympic gold medal a US women won in the 100m was in 1960 by Wilma Rudolph. That means there were three Olympiads where the US did not medal. The US women again got the Gold in '64 and '68, thanks to the unheralded Wyomia Tyus. Then the doping era began, because the 1972 Olympics is when we began to see the East Germans and the Soviets begin to dominate the women's sprint events. In fact the US women didn't win another gold medal in sprinting at the Olympics until the 1984 Olympics, and that was because the East Germans and Soviets boycotted the 1984 Olympics. But doping became popular in the 1980's among US athletes. US athletes were taking so much diuretics, that their urine samples were nearly 100% water, to mask the PEDs. The Jamaican women on the other hand kept getting Bronze medals behind the East Germans, Soviets, and Americans. The 1988 Seoul Olympics was the peak of doping, and the Olympic committee began to clean up the sport. Even though a few like Marion Jones were able to evade the drug testing in the 2000 Olympics. But by this time, the German and now Russian women sprinters were no longer a factor. FYI, in the 2000 Olympics 100m women's final, Jamaica was cheated out of a gold medal for Tanya Lawrence, and a silver medal for Merlene Ottey, by the IOC who disqualified both Marion Jones and Ekaterini Thanou of Greece for doping. Now that the sprint events are much cleaner than the 1970s through the 2000s, we see Jamaican women dominating the event. Since 2004, there have been 15 Olympic medals on offer in the women's 100m event, and Jamaica has claimed 11 of those medals without any doping scandals associated with those Jamaican sprinters. No country in the history of this planet, can show such a dominance in the women's 100m sprinting event to date. Plus this is being achieved with the best drug testing regimens in place. Where are the German, Russian, and other eastern bloc women athletes? Women athletes from these countries use to dominate women's sprinting in the 60s, 70s and 80s. What happened to them? So your statement "The US did not become good in the 1980s, they were always good", is patently false. If you had invested the time to learn the US Olympic sprinting history you could have impeached your own statement. As for the Jamaican morals regarding cheating, we are not like Americans, who have a win at all costs (including cheating) mentality. There are no "Wheaties" box covers waiting for Jamaican athletes who win gold medals. Also, you need to appreciate how geographically small an island Jamaica is. It is not as large as the US, such that if you shamed your family name in one State, you could move to another State and start over. The Jamaican sprinters who have been caught doping, have had to leave the country, and therefore never compete for Jamaica ever again. So you can bank on the fact that our repeat champions are clean athletes, and their successes are due to natural talent plus proper coaching and training.

Having a strong support and feeder system that identifies talent early and hard work trumps money and so called genetics theory. We have built something that works and don't need to water it down to make anyone else feel better about themselves. We just need to have the same agency in other endeavors and we will be fine. Talking about fast twitch and big bumper make Jamaicans fast, if so where are the other predominantly black countries winning 1-2-3. Exactly.

Reading the comments, I was immediately drawn into the conversation. I have always been in love with track and field since a young child. I observed many excellent runners throughout my life time in the women's contest. My favorite runner of all time is Evelyn Ashford. Back in the day, you rarely heard about any runners from Jamaica, it was always the East Germans who seemed to rule the sport along with all the other sports in the Olympics. Those East Germans were something else along with the Russians back in the day!! The first time I heard of a Jamaican runner was Merlene Ottey back in the 1980's and 90's. Now, they seem to dominate the sport but that only means that they learned from their past and built on their future to produce top world athletes and WE should all be thankful that they have been a contribution to the advancement of the sport. Now its the rest of our turns to learn and built a future for our athletes as well.

It's not as simple as that. Most jamaican boys love and choose football/soccer over athletic and they also play cricket and even basketball. A lot of them also have the distraction of dancehall/reggae music where they can make fast money (no pun intended) without hard physical training and discipline. What people don't mention most of the time is the fact that the Jamaican schools championships are as big as most senior championships anywhere in the world.
