Yes,accident do happen, especially at construction sites. And I hope the Ministry concerned should also be on alert, particularly with construction workers from China, who may injured themselves, inorder to claim for compensations. As a former volunteer with an Humanitarian Organisation dealing with foreign workers, I have had seen it all

Kudos to CNA for reporting on this topic. This is why regulations are so important, and that is why it is vital that those who issue regulations remain politically independent.

In the uk the whole work team would be suspended not just stop work order pending further investigation then comes termination after that And if anyone was hurt it would be prosecution

Because of "special" visa, foreign workers are very cheap, have no knowledge of safety and low skills, zero bargaining power, almost sub-human...

No worker do not want to work safely. Most often than not, it is the management who is responsible.

Management not fierce and strict enough because they don't want to piss off the workers. Plus trust me that the workers do not all have average IQ... Many are not very wise because of the place they come from. I don't mean to be insulting them.. it's just how it is. That's why they have to be sort to do work based on their abilities. You don't put blur sorting in high risk work.

There are lesser and lesser younger people to get in this field. Many countries rely on importing construction workers from oversea to build the high skyscrapers.

Worksite accidents and injuries / death usually arise from the following: (1) The company bosses, the middle managers, Site Managers, Site Safety Officers and workers do not take safety measures seriously. Safety measures are taken just to satisfy mandatory requirements. Workers may be issued PPE but nobody borders whether they use them and use them properly. When the company breeds such culture, accidents happens. (2) Some companies cut corners and do not replace machinery worn out parts or check and maintain machinery regularly to ensure that these are safe for operations. Also some cut corners by not providing temporary lights to kit dark areas or at night. (3) Many foreign workers may be from countries that do not have any mandatory safety regulations. Hence, the tendencies not to practice Sg requirements. (4) Long ago some foreign workers even purposely injure or maimed themselves to claim Workmen’s Compensation. Hope, there is no such recurrent. (5) Also contractors are exam smart. When MOM officers arrive at site, the site entry guards or workers will inform the Site Manager and Safety Officers who will instruct workers to put on PPE & do some immediate remedial actions like covering up holes in floor slabs, barricades etc. (6) Site Safety also problematic in completed projects. Mast times the MCST Managers may not spot check so ensure maintenance crews practice proper site safety. Perhaps it is time for MOM to incorporate new regulations to penalize Site Managers (say fines or deport or revoke PR) and revoke Site Safety Officers’ Licence etc.

I thought the video will show small and medium contractors who actually implement a proper safe practice as a good example for others, maybe in the next episode.

No point going after the safety supervisor to about his workers unsafe acts. Usually, their instructions or advices are being superseded by the Site Supervisors, OM, PM, PD. Even if you get a Safety Director also his/ her advices will fall into deaf ears. Why? That is because the entire safety team's pay master is usually the ones who allows unsafe work to continue. Don't believe me? Try pick a few construction companies and ask the safety team.

To add on, I have ever heard of a safety officer was repremanded by PM because the safety officer told the worker to secure his safety harness. But instead of listening, that worker went to complaint to his PM. So what powers does a safety officer has in the worksite? Basically, only MOM Inspectors have the say when they raid a site. But after that? Back to square one?

Because HDB is in a rush to build homes cos SGeans are screaming for more housing. Not blaming SGeans, just stating the facts and unfortunate reality. Covid halted construction for years, which is nobody's fault.

The root cause simply is due to rushing for deadline. Do u not know construction project has been delayed far far behind schedule and as day come closer to deadline, all are forcing their worker to work ot and if not, how much construction subcontractor have to paid for penalty. Secondly with limited manpower crunch, it worsen the matter. Lastly do not forget, b4 pandemic times, no rushing for deadline.. Now if construction subcontractor cannot meet deadline, all prepare to go bankrupt simply. It is reality that this pandemic has resulted many company be it any industry bust easily... Only hdb won't bust because they are the boss.. 😂 😂 They called the shot🤣 🤣 All contractor to subcontractor these 2 years cannot meet target, prepare surrender or bankrupt no money for compensation.. 😂 😂 🤣 Reality and truth...

Wow, the compensation is around 15-20 years of a typical construction worker salary. It make you wonder if some workers actually injured themselves intentionally?
