I worked for a company that "won" a contract to provide a Russian steel mill with a modern control system shortly after the Soviet Union fell. Besides having to constrain the computer system to something the US State Department would approve the real issue was payment. The Russians had no money - at least no money that was worth receiving. Ultimately the solution was the Russians would pay in coal tar sands, a broker would monetize that and we would get the money generated (minus some fee for the broker who would sell the tons of tar sands somehow). It worked but gold would have been a lot easier to put a value on. Russia is asset-rich and still manages to be poor.

"Which in German terms isn't all that fast because there's a lot of paperwork"... I had to laugh at that because I'd just been talking about how complete blueprints for the WW2 battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz exist to this day because the Germans had so many copies that had gone to so many different discrete design committees that when they were staring defeat in the face near the end of the war they literally couldn't burn them all fast enough. While not a single complete blueprint for the Japanese battleships Yamato and Mushashi exist because the Japanese destroyed the very few that were ever produced.

3:35 I had to do a 5 second double take when Peter commented that the Indians are quietly admitting (according to him) that the partnership with Russia on Brahmos has been a disappointing waste. I looked at this as a key weapons system for the Indian military. As I understand it, the Russians were supposed to partner to create a next generation version with longer range and better accuracy. It shouldn’t be surprising to hear that the Russians were peddling their reputation and basically stealing the money for vaporware, but I would want to hear more about this and whether it bears any impact to the first generation missile system.

@@spartancrown as far as I know Brahmos is the most successful JV so far and the NG version too is not facing any such problem and DRDO itself has successfully tested HSTDV, so in my opinion there is no such struggle regarding any missile program. @RD-jc2eu Жыл бұрын
@4umy What the OP is referring to is a post several months ago about what happens to Russian oil wells in Siberia if their markets for oil were to dry up to the point they had no where to ship what they're producing. If this were to lead to overrunning their in-country storage capacity, they would have to begin shutting down some of their wells. The Russians would start with the more southern oil fields first, in that case, but if they were forced to begin shutting down wells in the permafrost, those wells would likely never be operational again (or, at least, in the foreseeable future). This is because they would freeze up, and the Russians don't have the know-how and experienced personnel it would take to get those wells back on-line again. (Those fields were not the work of the Russians in the first place; they were developed by Western oil-field operators (using their experience from developing the Alaskan North Slope), who have since pulled out of Russia, with no plans of ever going back.) This would lead to a permanent decrease in overall Russian production capacities.

The weapon he is actually alluding to is _BrahMos-II,_ the second version. The first version of BrahMos was a supersonic cruise missile in the Mach 3.5 range, which you are correct was developed and is in service in some limited numbers. The BrahMos-II was supposed to be a follow-on hypersonic version with fundamentally greater range, capacity, and guidance, for all intents and purposes it was a brand new design. this is what the Russians and the Indians were developing jointly, but progress has been stalled on that for the last four years at least, and there have been no new developments. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BrahMos-II This is also not the Indians first joint development experience where they eventually pulled out after spending billions because the Russians could not deliver on their end and kept all the money, the PAK FA (i.e. Su-57) being the archetypal example.

You might be confusing the BrahMos 2 with BrahMos. BrahMos is a ramjet powered supersonic missile already in service with all branches of the Indian armed forces, and is based on the Russian Moskit cruise missile. India has worked locally to enhance the range of the missile, and added firing ability from its Flanker jets and from its submarines, aside from the ships and ground launch systems. Its range has been increased from the original 290km to 500km and 800km, and plans to increase it further to 1500km. BrahMos 2 is a project hoping to build off of the Russian Zircon hypersonic missile, which itself only got inducted in Russian forces in January of 2023. Russia may be foot-dragging on that one, partly to keep its upper hand on tech and partly to placate its girlfriend, China. India is developing its own hypersonic missile and has tested a hypersonic glide vehicle in the recent past.

A good point here, Eventually, after all of he chest thumping has subsided, lives lost, the reality of folks just getting on with life sheds it's ugly head.Should one look at many countries around the world, one can see how folks are just getting fed up with being under some form of tyrannical governments rule, they simply would rather get on with life than constantly always be in turmoil. Harmony can never be achieved so long as folks keep living in their own heads, this goes for what piece of land they want, have, way of life, haves & have not, whatever rendition or form of worship. It is, all between the ears. I cannot say that men are entirely at fault for most wars but in general, they are. I agree, Andrew. When the dust settles, days, weeks, years from now, the reckoning begins. The US simply needs to remove its self from all of this. We are not the parent, watchdog, police of the world. Everyone has their own way of doing business and living, we should at the very least, be respectful of this. Our borders are being over run with folks wanting to have a better life. It would be in everyone's best interest, across the globe if we all shared some commonality of keeping all countries with some sort of dignified stability rather than transcending across continents. We have only one planet that bears our existence. We know better yet seemingly always repeat shooting ourselves in the foot or cutting our nose off, despite our face when it comes to moving forward with our evolution. This is why, our species continues its dragging of the knuckles with the content of intellectual transparency. I would coin this as, the chain is only as good as the weakest link. Yes, the hierarchy for survival still is the makeup of how we ultimately continue. Are we destined for extinction? A question as seen from but a simple context. Brings much sadness, I would truly want to believe we could somehow forgo much of this pettiness & find what our true potential as a species, could do. Therein lays the problem though of that weakest link syndrome. Selflessness if pure, could embolden our virtues for succeeding only in a relative form. Would AI be a consideration? Look at all that plays into this. Something has to change in order for humanity to continue, it is just that simple.

I think you may be incorrect. Most of the missiles the Yemenis (Houthis) use are actually from when they were a communist country with significant supplies of missiles, rockets, ammo and other arms. Iranian engineers have simply showed them how to modify their supplies for better targeting when Saudi Arabia and UAE had invaded Yemen. Iran has shown them to update their electronics. That is why most of their missiles and rockets and anti ship missiles do not even look like what Iran produces. Houthis had also purchased large supplies of Chinese antiship and other weapons. Iran has never been a large suppliers of anything to Houthis. But, Iranians PROBABLY, had asked their Hezbollah proxies from Lebanon to come down (since Yemenis and Lebanese they both speak Arabic) to advise the Houthis. Iranians do not speak Arabic.... In other areas that Iran had helped Houthis was to repair their fighter planes and air to air missiles when Houthis were at war with Saudis and UAE. These are what I could gather from open sources.

I see a lot of people asking if Ukraine can win the war with Russia but it seems to me that the US strategy is often to bleed our enemies over long periods of time, rather than actually defeat them outright. Looking at the Ukraine war, we continue to arm Ukraine well enough to prevent a Russian victory but not well enough for them to drive the Russians out. This bleeds the Russian economy and military, while keeping them labelled an international pariah for as long as the war continues. It has the added benefit of making Europe ever more dependent on the US.

Everyone, male and female, was encouraged to get degrees and PhDs and the state fully funded it. Remember in the early 80s Israel bombed the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Tuwaitha in an Israeli bombing called Operation Babylon. The French were assisting in the transfer of nuclear know-how, but they were doing it to a scientifically advanced people. It was Iraqs industrialisation, electrification, and mass peon qualification, that was the real reason behind our Gulf Wars. The Philippines haven't gotten what they paid for yet. The Indians will deliver, of course, but what Peter is saying is that the Brahmos program & sales will be going forward without Russian participation in any of it. The Indians got scammed by the Russians again 😂 & Peter's right; they're not going to get their money back. That's similar to what happened with the Su-57 development deal between Russia & India, but with a 180° twist. The Indians realized after a couple Years' work on it that the Russians couldn't hold up their end of its build deal. They walked on that project, too. The main difference between the two programs, the Brahmos & the Sukhois, is "who kept the stuff" after each deal died.

Not quite, he's just going through his usual habit of not giving the exact correct details because he's not a military or technology guy.

Tangent: - is Russia at risk of major infrastructural decay? After seeing centralized heating systems burst and have entire neighborhoods first flooded and then frozen stiff... it got me thinking: with much fewer men, and a lack of skilled labor, is Russia at risk? Hear me out: not only are they throwing massive quantities of men at the war, and have resulted in an exodus, but the real estate owned by these hundreds of thousands of men are, I'm guessing, sent back onto the real estate market, which maybe will later trigger a spiraling effect on real estate. But also... if you have hundreds of thousands of people mobilized at the front, every other few guy who dies will not be tending to his apartment's heating system, and occasionally cause damage on entire condo units, all of which is hard to repair properly when there is a shortage of skilled labor. Maybe I'm making too many ties between individual factors, but I find it interesting that the possibilities are even there.

Russian women are pretty capable, Stalin used them in his armies and Russia is relatively egalitarian in terms of skilled labour. And Russians of all ages and genders have a "fix-it" mentality after years of living under Soviet shortages, they know how to repair things and make them last long beyond their usual lifespan. They are imaginative improvisors as we have seen from images of their adaptations of military equipment. But the short answer is still yes. They have lots of resources but ultimately all of them are finite - men, missiles, tanks, gold, microchips, foreign tech. They might not run out for a few years but they will run out.

I love the efficiency of Latin. Pardon me for geeking out on this, but seeing your quote made me think of Cicero’s De Re Publica. Classical Latin did not use commas, but the ecclesiastical Latin used today by the Vatican uses punctuation as it does help with readability. But, I digress.

I was in Al-Khobar Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War when an Iraqi Scud missile killed a couple dozen Marines in their barracks around two miles from where I was sleeping in my Expat. compound. The whole area was ostensibly heavily defended by Patriot missile batteries.

I think the "why" is pretty obvious... I was going to say the "where" was a more interesting question, but actually that one is pretty obvious as well.

'the burn rate of shells is orders of magnitude more than they can produce'. This states a high firing rate, yet 2 years later no shortage? Zeihan's statements are incoherent.

@@tim211292 I looked it up and found that Russia is firing 5 times as many shells as Ukraine, in addition to massive amounts of missiles and drones and aviation bombs.

after watching PZ for a few year, i’ve come to realize that when he says “orders of magnitude” it is rarely meant to be literal. Which is unfortunate for a professional communicator …

@@hyhhy now read what i said again and then read what you said, nothing you said contradicted what i said. if ukraine fires 1 shell and russia 5 then russia is firing x5 shells, but they still have dramatically reduced their consumption from before. i swear you people dont know basic maths or reasoning
