Answer: Because theists will often use bullying as a debate tactic and the only way to counter bullying is with harsh retaliation.

Religion kept us in the dark ages for a thousand years. Many of us don't want to go back!

The dark ages are a western conceit. While Europe was regressing with the spread of militant Christianity, the rest of the world was doing just fine with their various and sundry religions.

The harshness, as far as I can see, comes from the religious side. Don't all religions call for the death of unbelievers? At least, separation from them.

Definitely not all. Many pre-christian religions had no such beliefs at all, because it simply wasnt a useful belief in the harsher times and environments, plus the way society ruled was different, far less authoritarian and centralized.

Sean has a very comfortable and privileged seat on the fence. Had my ancestors acted like Sean, it's not impossible, I would be a slave right now. Enjoy not being part of one of the many groups directly oppressed by religion, Sean. People like Sean aren't the problem, but they sure as shit are helping the problem persist.

I would go so far as to say that that mindset is a big part of the problem because it doesn't confront or want to deal with other parts of the problem

I have no problem with believers until they try to bring relgion into the science classroom or governmental decisions.
@MoszАй бұрын
Normalizing religion makes it exceedingly difficult to end extremism. (least controversial example : Westboro Baptist Church) Bad epistemology leaks to other facets of life. How is it possible to have religion not leak into governmental decisions without explicit discrimination against the religious?
@brianhay4024Ай бұрын
@Mosz It may come to that. I would be happy to start with removal of creationism from schools and removing biblically-based morality laws. If there is still leakage into government decisions we can address it.

@@brianhay4024There is no "if." There's no reality where people in general think to themselves "I believe a divine, all-powerful being is telling me what to do but I'm not going to let it influence my professional life." As long as we encourage belief in nonsense, that nonsense will play a role in how we're governed.

Sean needs to call into christian shows to let them know that their religion is just a social construct there's no reason to argue about it. I'm sure they will agree that their beliefs just are what they are and there's no reason to argue about it with people who don't believe in their religion.
@mirjov8323Ай бұрын
Why the harshness? Religion / beliefs are imbedded deeply in the mind, a coping mechanism and a way (fallacious) to explain our externalities and world view. It is essentially a crutch to lean on. Take that away and expect a violent reaction. Aka PLATOs Cave analogy Etc etc

Everything he said was 100% in line with very common atheist beliefs about the world. I find myself baffled that he experiences himself as in the middle. I get the feeling that the only disagreements he gets from atheists is them refusing his straw man arguments and likely not sharing his opinion that the benefits(personal and/or societal) to pretending to be a theist outweigh the downsides. Or his apparent opinion that opposing the evils religion comes packaged with is pointless, arguing for argument's sake.

@dalecs47Ай бұрын
Why do atheists argue against religion in our lives? What a stupid selfish question. Religion is all about money and power. It is not about what anyone says that God says. When a person says to you “Worship my god, do what god says.” They are really saying to you “Do what I say, worship me.” "Give me power over your life and give me your money."

"In my career being affiliated or not hostile to religion is a social advantage" Thats obviously a bad thing on the whole. A social advantage that is not earned but given based on ones inclusion in a social group is akin yo coercion. Also this is talked about all the time, just not in the positive terms the caller appears to want them talked about.

I don't have any good reason to think that gods exist. I'd go a step further and say the question is irrelevant and a distraction from my goal of understanding people and what myths and stories can show us about the compleixties of human nature. It nurtures compassion and empathy in a way facts and non-fiction can't. Street Epistemology is a lovely set of tools for having kinder conversations. Some of the people in the community unfortunately suffer from the same affliction of listening to fix a problem instead of ilstening to understand.

Buy-Bull quotes from the one translation of the dozens out there that makes you feel "good"...or are the feelings you get better described as "superior" and "special"?🤔 Why don't you switch it up and post the quotes in the original languages of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek? Oh yeah, because you would then have to actually get an EDUCATION in those languages and you aren't interested in actually educating or being educated. Remember that "Yahweh/Jehovah/Hashem/Adonai/Elohim/Shaddai/Ehyeh/Tzevaot" and it's offspring "Jesus the Christ of Nazareth" both love.....NOTHING, because they aren't f*ckin' real🤣🤣🤣
