WHY BACHMANN *WONT* MAKE THESE CHARACTERS!?

My main reason is that mattel doesn’t have the rights to give them access to make those characters. Since they never were owned by mattel.

This is a really smart and constructive argument, BUT Mattel bought HiT Entertainment, which bought Gullane previously. Meaning Mattel technically should have the rights to every character from the TV series I feel like the actual reason we don't get old characters is because Mattel don't deem them relevant anymore, even the people at Bachmann mentioned how they like basically can't do characters that aren't approved by Mattel or something

Doug Blaine did confirm around mid 2022 that the company could make characters that were in from season 13-24 as part of Mattel’s requirements. As much as I would love to see Diesel 10 being introduced to the range (despite appearing in cgi) Pinchy would only make things more difficult due to scaling standards. What is certain that characters like Stephen, Sidney, Nia and Luke are highly likely to be announced sometime in August and into early 2025.

1:44 humans are technically classified as animals, but that’s beside the point. Anyways, the reason Bachmann is not making non-cgi characters is because Mattel isn’t allowing them to make them, with the odd exception of easy rolling stock.

I hope they can get around to making the hero of the rails characters Hiro, Victor, and Kevin. I especially want to see Hiro be made. He would be a damn good money maker for both Bachmann and Mattel. A bachmann hiro would also get japanese buyers more into HO scale model railroading especially considering Hiro is very popular in Japan.

People at Bachmann WANT to make the model era characters, BUT Mattel doesn’t seem to be interested green lighting them because of their vision for the brand. At least, that’s what I think is going on and why I haven’t demanded them.

this conversation has been going on since the early days of SiF and Bachmann forums, Bachmann can only make what Mattel approves of. plain and simple (this includes all characters since Mattel own the IP)

Mostly the no model series no Railway Series character rule if those rules have been lifted they would have been able to make them

duke was gonna appear in kevin the steamie but was cut, in 2015 sam wilkinson wanted to bring boco and duke to cgi but it didn't happen, andrew brenner also wanted to bring boco back to cgi but mattel denied it, bachmann wanted to make boco, duke, and stepney but mattel denied it because those 3 didn't appear in cgi

I do think they will make those characters. I think they said once that they do want to make stepney but they can't because stepney is a forgotten character (just with little children) and mattel gets a say in merch. I dont think mattel would want stepney also

Bachman makes existing ho models that can be turned into Thomas characters like Hank and Connor and Arthur and the bowled out diesel and spamcan and old stuck up and Yong Bao and Wilbert and 16 and Murdoch, they can simply go the beau route and for most of them they can simply reuse the toolings with slight modifications and in case they need some slight modifications for eye mechanisms just in case

Right, I don’t keep up with Thomas stuff often, and I know I’ll get shit for poking my head onto this side of the internet again, but: Bachmann will likely never produce any of the “old” characters like Murdoch, Stepney, Derek, etc, it’s not because they don’t want to, they *know* people want them, so they know they’d sell well, licensing issues wouldn’t be an issue either, the fact is that Mattel would rather they produce characters relevant to the *current* series, hence why we’re seeing models like Daisy, Ryan, Rebecca, etc, characters like BoCo, Hank, Molly, and so on, haven’t been in the series since before the switch to CGI, and so Mattel simply won’t let them do it Also, the point you made about not wanting to put in the effort for a custom model of a character which hasn’t been produced in ready to run form yet… Does that not defeat the purpose of railway modelling entirely? None of this “hehe they make it for me so I don’t have to do anything” stuff, railway modelling was, and to an extent, still is about making do with what you can get your hands on, making modifications to what’s currently available to represent a particular time period, region, or in some cases an entirely alternate world, and with the way 3D printing is going, home-made models which can actually rival the detail of the pre-made ones are getting more common, that kind of creativity is what keeps the hobby alive

The story I came up with for why it would be in the series is that my railroad (the BL&G) would’ve leased their k4 5448 (Hank) that they bought from the PRR to the Northwestern Railway while the NWR’s #4 was down for an overhaul. After #4’s overhaul was completed, 5448 was brought back to America. It was then sidelined during the BL&G’s dieselization period (1961-1966), and put into storage. It was then removed from storage in 2018 and finished restoration in 2022.

You’re right, but back in the early 2000s some of those characters were going to be in CGI they just didn’t make the part.
