Never learned karate as it seems. There are short stances and short range strikes like sanchindachi and empi. Also karate and weapons should go hand in hand. In karate you also learn how to grapple and how to combat enemies with weapons. Nearly any martial art has all these components, if you just look for it.

Unpredictable is a result. The root cause is that it is not a game. Hence there are nu rules and you can do whatever it takes to win. (Until you get arrested and a court will tell you the rules ;)) If your fear is getting mugged.... carry 20 buxks in your wallet. If you get mugged once a month and just hand them the money, it is still cheaper than joining a gym. Safer too.

Well, it depends upon the street fight assailants we are gonna meet. Most martial art trainees / masters claiming their success in self defense in their street fights did not know that they had not met the right assailants yet. It is not easy like fighting on rules where several times the referees help us during the fight to prevent us from a serious injury from the attack of the opponent; but it is about the timing / opportunity that one can harm us in a real situation available in a street fight with the right person / gangster.

Why kickboxing on top of the list, and karate not on the list at all? Please explain. Karates great arsenal of techniques, also from kata, and the muscle memory it gives to repeat them year after year, is cruical in a situation when you have to act without time to think.

​ Personal experience: it depends on the specific training. Fma can be amazing. But it can fall prey to the same problems that a lot of other systems do.
