@Wendy Regis I think that's narrow-minded and needlessly pessimistic. If the South Korean government didn't care for mentally ill mothers, then why would they offer mental health treatment? Additionally, many causes of mental illness stem from a lack of support (financial or otherwise), which this system seems to have handled in spades. I'm sure their government isn't perfect, but we as foreigners can't assume things about it if we haven't personally experienced it or heard from someone who has.

That sounds incredible. I wish I had that opportunity for support 2 years ago when I had my son. Maybe it might have made a difference with my struggle to transition to being alone with my baby that had a health issue and the sudden PPD. Obsessively reading all the baby/parenting books and videos while pregnant did NOT prepare me for that level shock and sense of ineptitude when I brought my little one home a week after giving birth due to complications. All good now, though :-) So life often finds a way regardless lol

It also depends on the state and your job. I'm a flight attendant based out of NY so my entire pregnancy and appointments was 6k. It could have been 3k but i signed up for medicaid late. I had a few extra test because im older and i had a ambulance ride and emergency c section. I got a lot of free stuff from my insurance company. I also got leave from 6 months pregnant until my baby was a year old. All paid for. Now that is completely unusual here but this is why I would only have a baby in NY or Boston. No where else in the US.

When living in Japan I had a “Help Mark” tag to get a seat for my internal disability on the train. I had very similar experiences that unless I had my crutch or was visibility falling some people often wouldn’t offer their seat. Ironically the elderly were the most likely to offer their seats, while young people avoided eye contact until I asked for them to stand. Rarely would someone say no and it usually didn’t go well for them. Elderly passengers would scold them in front of everyone, which honestly was a tad satisfying. Overall most people were very kind. Especially the grandmas and grandpas.

OK so as someone who works customer service at a power company, the fact that you get a discount on your electricity is actually really cool and makes perfect sense. When I take a high bill call, if it is not heating (it's almost always heating, I'm in Canada), the number of people and the general age of them (elderly, teen, baby) is the next thing that we ask. Everyone's power usage is very individualized, but there are some general trends that we expect to see. - People tend to fuss more about making sure the temperature is perfect for babies and the elderly, more so that if they were living alone, using more power to heat/cool/humidify/dehumidify. - With the addition of another human in general, let alone a baby, there is all the extra laundry, especially if you are using hot water. - As far as teens, the reason we ask that is that teens tend to take long showers. Using kWh, because that is universal, but if 1 person takes a 10 minute shower every day for 30 days, that alone would be around 120kWh on your power bill, so if your teen is taking 20 minute showers, expect that to double. With our rates 120kWh is just under 15$, so if you have 2 teens who like long showers and 2 adults in the house, that is 90$ before tax just in showers alone. The things that we look are temperature control (Including pools and hot tubs), hot water use (including are their any leaking taps, if it is dripping hot water, hour water heater is turning on continuously to keep the water in the tank hot) & major appliances (fridges, freezers, ovens especially, AKA the ones that heat and cool... ). Yes turning off your lights helps, but a single 800 Lumens LED bulb that is on 24 hours a day for 30 days uses around 10 kWh.

It doesnt have to be though 🥺 More woman should have been taught about the golden hour. I did it and it works! Babies come out with an instinct just for feeding but if we dont know how to allow the process to happen as soon as they are born.. its almost like a dream you forget when you wake it. If you dont allow the baby to recall the instinct immediately, often it gets lost. Thats when the classes are great.. cause then its like you both are learning this foreign action but all along it was instinctual! So thankful that classes are a thing. Happy learning and sharing 🙂

It's actually incredibly inconsiderate to decide whether to give a pregnant lady a seat based on how big her bump is. There are so many complications that can make someone unable to stand or engage in physical activity. It can be life or death for the baby💔

To me it’s crazy that it even costs 400$ for a room after you give birth, in Norway it is 100% free, food and a room for a couple of days included! 😅🙈❤️ So happy your pregnancy is going well! You look happy and healthy! 🥰❤️

Same in Germany, both of my siblings have two kids each and that cost them nothing. Of course the care still does but doctors visits are free and all others kinds of treatments are too until they are 18. Even then it's very affordable or even free if you are chronically ill. My nephew has ASD and ADHD and had a whole bunch of other stuff going on like a stutter so he really got the most out of his free coverage as a child. 😂

@@maryalice5772 maybe I misunderstood a little! Of course it’s good if everything can be paid with the card so everything in that way it’s free! I thought she ment she had to pay 400$ and the rest was on the card. In Norway you don’t have to pay for anything and you don’t need a card, that’s why I find it shocking to hear the high prices of things like this in other countries! 🙈

Thanks so much for this video Megan! Me and my husband are in the midst of deciding where do we want to have our future baby to be born. I’m from Canada and we have free health care and no cost on anything including surgery and delivery. And since saving money plays a big role maybe I’ll start thinking about Korea. Especially since we live in Korea. Thank you 🙏🏼 ❤️

Cynthia, if you’re living in Korea, you should have your child there, Canada is affordable but Korea’s services are incredible for an average family!! I protest comparisons but in actuality there is no comparison here in US unless you are wealthy.

@@deborahcarr9023 thanks! But I still have to think about my husband job. Cause in Korea unfortunately they can only get 1 week off (depending were they are working) or they have to quit their job. And I will need help with the baby in the beginning. And since my entire family is in Canada it would make sense for me to get more help there. Also my husband wants us to move to Canada eventually. And like I said Canada health care is free. In Korea you still have to pay for surgery or any kind of injuries but not as much like America.

It's nice to hear about good health care and how they do help with finances since America is not that great in terms of mental health Health care Dental care Respect for pregnant people and so on. Luckily your in good hands and have a good support system.

wow that is so awesome that Korea is so good to their mothers to be it's so refreshing because here in the US as you know it's not good. Very expensive and insurance companies will only pay for one overnight stay after giving birth unless you have a C-section. I kept taking my prenatal vitamins for at least 6 to 10 months after I had my daughter because I breastfed and my doctor said the vitamins were very beneficial for breastfeeding and I breastfed for almost 2 years. I breastfed for almost 2 years because my doctor said if you breastfeed for two years it gives the baby extra health benefits. Although some women have problems breastfeeding and getting the baby to latch or have pain in the beginning. I personally had no problems. My daughter latched on no problem, never really had pain. She did refuse the bottle though but she was just preferred nursing, she was kinda crazy for it I say that jokingly of course LOL. It was difficult for me to get her to stop nursing even though she was eating food but when she started asking for it by name I said okay we got to stop. She's 21 years old now and I'm so glad I breastfed her and was able to with no problems as I think it really helped with her health as we have allergy asthma autoimmune diseases that run in the family. I thought I'd share my experience because not all women who breastfeed have problems it was wonderful in my opinion. Not to mention it helps you lose weight fast even after having a c-section and not being able to exercise.

Here in Finland, the government pays "child benefit" for every child to the parents to use for the costs of having a baby. They pay it every month until the baby turns 17 years old and the monthly amount this year is 95e for the first child, 105 for the second, 134 for the third, 164 for the 4th and 183e for the fifth and up. And for a single parent, they give an extra 64e per month per child. Not to mention schools are free here (we pay high taxes). I don't know how the actual giving birth costs are but I don't think they are that much considering most of the fees are covered by the government. And ofc can't forget to mention the baby box which is filled with baby clothes and stuff the mom might need. The mom can also choose to receive it in money but most choose the box because it is more valuable in money. Plus for the first month or so, some moms use the actual box as the baby bed as it comes with a blanket too if I am not wrong.
