I stand corrected your 2k sandwich guy was there finally.... but hes not as good as the 2.5k guy on pompadour near Noi Cafe or the $1 one on wat Bo (fish & pate). the $1 one (fish & pate) not far from end of concrete drain (your area) is good also. My apologies.

spot on. tourists need services that's good for us. tourism=gdp=infrastructure, that's good for us. Hard pressed to find a seller that doesn't take card. (all part of the sinister plan to turn us cashless)

Yea Dave -- Cambodia certainly makes it very hard not to consider their over 55 retirement visa for older expats ! --- "Cash is King" perhaps remains for the best deals in many cases ? Some in the Philippines negotiate rentals with a cash 6 month or a year in advance payment for example ! One I know has an $80 / mo rental the past 7 years that way - on a very comfortable 1 br. he spent about two grand on - ''making it his" - the way he wants it ? > Imagine - $960 rent - once per year (!) is the way he looks at it (?) for half the price in his former US home. Makes his $2500 / mo. military pension go a long way !!! Runs his AC 24/7 for another $80/mo. and lives only 20 miles from the VA Clinic for his medical........... Siem Reap looks really good to me too - but it is much hotter than the Philippines. -?- An adjustment to early morning living for essentials appears to be a necessity there ? 🤔 ❤ 👍 🙏 ✌ 👌 👊 👋 🤞

My main complaint about Cambodia is how foreigners are scammed/ripped off with the price of electricity. The local price (per kWh) is below $0.20, but landlords and condominiums are charging foreigners $0.25+ and sometimes even over $0.30 per kWh. That’s at least the case in Phnom Penh… not sure about Siem Riep and other areas. That alone makes me question whether or not it’s worth returning to Cambodia.
@Hea9lt9hy92 ай бұрын
The landlords charge 1/4 the cost of apartment in Siem Reap vs. the landlord in USA. Water is so cheap… Everything else are so cheap… Cambodia has to buy electricity from Thailand making the cost high for the landlord. If the cost of electricity is $.25 or $.30/kw is a deal breaker for you, then go somewhere else. Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines or Indonesia may have lower electricity cost but VISA, taxes and other things are more difficult and higher but you are OK with them.
@DamienGWilson2 ай бұрын
@ You evidently have little to no understanding of the value of real estate in Siem Reap. Those landlords aren’t giving you a discount on the value of the apartments there. And only a fool would compare Cambodia to the US as a metrics for price/value. The fact is the infrastructure/property is cheap because it’s built to accommodate the local economy, wherein the average salary is $150-$200 per month. Therefore, said numbers set the baseline for the local economy, meaning the price of goods, rent, et cetera. In most cases, foreigners are overpaying to rent the apartments not the other way around. That said, nothing justifies being scammed. Of course everything is cheaper than living in the US, and rightfully so, but that doesn’t justify being overcharged for anything. If you were smart then you’d lookup the official electricity rates instead of trying to justify what you’re being told by greedy landlords. I’ve been traveling and living as an expat for over 20 years and have lived in several countries on multiple continents, and have learned through experience that your type of mindset is what ruins an expat destination. If you’re living in a place as an expat then the goal should be to pay as close to the same price as locals for housing and utilities. Why would you relocate to a developing country to pay above market prices, which only encourages the locals to further inflate prices.
@Hea9lt9hy92 ай бұрын
@@DamienGWilson I bought a suitcase that was higher price and tax in Atlanta vs. my state in the same store. I get scammed every day from big businesses or state/ local tax. I accept these scams living in USA. Per my statement earlier, if Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines or USA don’t scam you then live there. Higher cost of electricity seems to be a deal breaker for you… You will be miserable and making everyone else miserable in Cambodia.
@mimibigdy19172 ай бұрын
@@Hea9lt9hy9agree,there are bigger scams from higher VISA costs or other added costs with renting apartments in other countries or taxes or other difficulties by big businesses etc.. We don’t define them as scams. Expats have many countries to live in … don’t live in Cambodia and make everyone around you miserable… Cambodia is building its electricity infrastructure and canal so that it will be independent to reduce cost.
@DamienGWilson2 ай бұрын
@@Hea9lt9hy9 Let me explain this as simple as possible so that you can understand. Most of the rental listings in Cambodia, or at least the ones on the popular websites frequented by foreigners, come with utilities active under the landlord’s name. My problem is landlords tend not to send the official bill (with the regulated price) from the power company to the renter. Instead, landlords create their own invoices for the electricity upon which they markup the real cost of electricity. Only a fool would ignore such an egregious act, especially when you’re overpaying by 25% or more. And it’s no coincidence that almost all rental properties are doing this without the option for renters to put the electricity in their own name to pay direct to the electric company. I’m not here to make anyone miserable, but I’m also not here to sell dreams/lies and/or hide the truth. If you’re happy in Cambodia then fine… pat yourself on the back and have a good day, but don’t attempt to delegitimize known facts that don’t fit your agenda. Cambodia isn’t a perfect country and despite its ease of access (visa), it still lacks in several categories compared to many of the other SE Asian countries… since you continue to mention them. And not everyone places ‘how cheap it is to live in a place’ over ‘quality of life’ or ‘access to Western amenities’ and not every expat wants to live the type of lifestyle offered in Siem Reap. However, every expat I know does want to pay fair prices for their housing and utilities at the minimum. This is why most expats enter into long-term rental agreements instead of renting AirBnBs month-to-month, seeing as their goal is to pay prices commensurate with the local market in whatever country. Furthermore, you’re using examples that have no correlation to the aforementioned. I’m not discussing prices changes due to different government-directed regulations such as a difference in tax, and I’m not talking about a difference of price in consumer products-that which the respective retailers paid for said products. I’m talking about greedy landlords reselling electricity to tenants at a higher price than what’s been regulated by the electric company and government. And that’s a problem.
