i think you forgot something important nick, where all the symbolism and character traits align with each other-- the colours of the clothes themselves Ryan in high school musical 1 and 2 before i don't dance has never been shown with a potential love interest. he has that innocence of not having experienced romantic love yet, represented by his mostly-white outfit. on his hat, he has black stripes. like fellow youtube film analyser "now you see it" explained, stripes represent a deviance in society and in film, to point out someone or something like no other. the stripes represent his sexuality, kept only in his head until tHIS MASTERPIECE OF A SCENE. the black could be interpreted as him trying to cast it into the void in his mind, feeling ashamed of his sexuality. but then he sees chad. chad who's so full of passion-- passion, represented by the red of his clothes. like ryan, he has that innocent white on him, though tainted by a fiery red (a colour that also stands for love) on all of his clothing, except for his white undershirt. it could be read as him having felt surface passion before, but not to the core of his heart, underneath all the layers. when they switch clothes at the end, i think the symbolism shifts just a b i t. ryan is now wearing chad's red and white, having felt chad's newfound love for him, knowing his passion. chad is wearing mostly white, his innocence of TRUE romantic love exposed for all to see, but like ryan before, the looming thought of how his sexuality might be shamed in society lingers in his mind. and t h a t is the colour symbolism of their short, sweet time together. -a not-so-serious-but-could-also-be-so analysis of their clothing by eyrist lee

Even at his most fervent, Chad never actually says he WONT, only that he doesnt. Hes stuck in this assumption that because he hasn't before, he cant-- but he never actually says he doesnt WANT to. He never establishes an actual rejection, merely a backpedaling from the idea because he hasn't before. Faced with "you could, if you wanted to", Chad cant actually bring himself to say he DOESNT want to, weakly repeating that it's not something he does, instead. If he had, the entire playful flirtation of Ryan would not have happened-- despite ostensibly being an argument, it remains friendly and playful, to the point Ryan is comfortable with sincerely flirting. If Chad had actually rejected Ryan, ryan would have backed off-- but Chad never did.
