Demon salvatore was such a horrible person, that's why i never understood why people shipped him with bonnie.

Or Elena! But I think, they shipped him with Bonnie to compensate for the writers' like of love/care for her character.

I always loved Damon's potential (and Ian Somerhalder's sex appeal), but I agree - the character itself paled, especially after the first few seasons. I mainly blame the tendency in US-based shows for main characters to suffer character regression year after year as a sacrifice made to the gods of series renewal. But I think some of his appeal was also down to the tropes of the time. Can there be a love triangle? There *will* be a love triangle! Or seven!! And it was totally normal to have a romantic lead be really rapey, unthinkingly racist, continually violent, and constantly self-centered. (These days, we'll still get the last 2 if it's a supernatural show, but they try to at least make the first 2 be more covert traits.) Because that stuff was so common in *lots* of shows on at that time, the good bits of Damon stuck out, while the shitty stuff faded in to the background. And for me, the character of Stefan was always too straightforward and earnest in the early seasons. I stopped watching regularly by the time he started getting more complicated.
