It's basically a Rythme with a bass line. I'm more curious about the origin of his very cool quirky vocal. Did he find the voice 1st & fit to the cords or visa versa. There's a "Who" song called "Eminence Front" released 10 years before, around 1971 that reminds me of the same thread that runs thru guitar & vocal. That one seemed to play off the keyboard. How ever Dave found his signature. it sure is unique.

Well, it’s not necessarily what he did. He didn’t start with that chord progression as an idea. He doesn’t think chord progression first and then figure out a more complicated (yet simpler and/ or better sounding ) way of playing it later. But we get what you are saying.😊

I would think he just went with fill and not the chord coloring. It’s funny when u find a sound and then do the theory behind it. Nobody is a classically trained musician anymore and u sort of stumble into the groove and then turns into “color”

That’s how any average guitar player would play it. But Dave challenges himself. He plays it the way he wants to play it until it sounds perfect to him. For him it dosent matter how hard the stretch is.
