One other thing as well in Florida the water there also has a higher sulfur count which also helps give it that unique smell. The sulfur is most notable when you are taking a shower in you room you can smell it purely with very few added chemicals. If you live in a state with a low sulfur count you will be able to pick up the scent easier as well!

But he did not say anything about chemicals like Bromine, he mainly implied something about their wildlife interacting with their water and maybe some recycling of the water...

I was curious about the cost difference between bromine and chlorine and it doesn't appear to be a whole lot more. The video sort of implied that the extra cost might prohibit a consumer-grade pool owner from using it, but it seemed to only be a few dollars more for 1-inch tablets. Sure, this adds up considerably depending on how large your pool is, but when you consider that less bromine is required over time versus chlorine, the extra costs might actually be washed out or even slightly less. The real cost difference is in the process of getting bromine into the water since I understand it's much harder to dissolve than chlorine. But installing a device to do just that is a one time cost.

How terrible is it that Disney can afford bromine but they still fired all their American IT workers and replaced them with cheap H1B's .
@igfoobar7 жыл бұрын
Under the H1B visa program, big corporations like Disney can bring in foreigners to fill jobs that they supposedly can't find any Americans to do. These foreigners work at a fraction of the cost of American workers and are essentially indentured to the company so they don't seek higher-paying work elsewhere. Not only is it a bad program, but it gets abused. Disney, for example, *fired* a large number of their American IT workforce and then brought in H1B visaholders to replace them, simply as a cost-cutting measure. All good Americans will, as a cost-cutting measure of our own, not patronize Disney anymore.
@dynasty00197 жыл бұрын
Well, unfortunately you are late in this case, the plan to replace American IT workers was shelved a long time ago. All the workers are rehired.

Neat. They should make a Disneyland water scented candle.
As an instructor with the National Swimming Pool Foundation, as well as a former Jungle Cruise Skipper, this video is right up my alley! I actually didn't know that Disney went with the bromine choice. One thing that might interest you, though you may already know this, is that both Chlorine and bromine are degraded by UV rays. But certain chlorine types can be "conditioned" using Cyanuric Acid that slow the effects of UV degradation. Bromine is not protected by Cyanuric Acid, so it makes sense that they would use it on the dark rides that are mostly not exposed to the harsh So. California sunshine. Though, they may actually use straight bromamines to disinfect the water. It tends to be less harsh doses of disinfectant released into the water, but still making it safe for guests who may put their hands in the water and then, God forbid, get a taste of the water...Disney is very smart for using bromine for all the health and safety reasons mentioned in your video. Enough water and Disney nerding out for now. Thanks for the fun video!!

Even some other big amusement parks seem to have this particular smell in their water attractions. I remember the Pirate themed attraction in Gardaland, Italy, has this smell- How can I describe it? It almost smells like the inside of a cave with running fresh water, wet but not strong. Now I know where it comes from, thanks for the informative video!

Bromine is also a neurotoxin, and can create feelings of calm, mild euphoria, and compliance. Do the math. Just sayin'...

Some of the Disneyland rides have this distinct unique smell that stays with you whenever you think of the ride. I always loved the smell on the Pirates of the Carribean ride, but had no idea what it was. That's interesting to note that the Bromine isn't used to give that smell for ambiance purposes, but was really for anti-bacterial purposes. The Haunted Mansion also has a distinct smell as well too.

The smells instantly take me back and make me feel like a child. Thanks for explaining! Haha, I wanted to say, my uncle has worked at Disney for like 20 years as a mechanic (I believe he works on cars land now) and when my old car was having water problems (honestly I don’t really know what was wrong with it except it would fill up with oil in the water tank or something weird) and he used one of the chemicals that they use in the middle (over by Huck Finns island) to degrease the water? I believe it worked for a while. But then the head gasket blew. Lol 20 year old cars.

I always noticed this unique “water ride” smell, but I always thought I was crazy. I’ve actually grown to love this smell, so many memories.

Last time I was in a theme park was a decade ago but the smell of water rides is unforgettable. It lingers on your clothes.

Outdoor pools don't use bromine because it breaks down very fast when exposed to sunlight. So yeah that get gets really expensive fast. So you will find a lot of bromine hot tubs as they are typically covered when not use. Plus a home pool typically doesn't get high bacteria levels of a public pool so after it's shocked about once week you shouldn't be smelling chlorine if it's clean.

My uncle was the 5th person to be hired by Disneyland Inc. in 1954, before Disneyland was built. He was the Park operations manager at Disneyland from 1956-61, reported directly to Walt Disney, with 1,100 people under him. Walt wanted absolute perfection in in his guests' experience at Disneyland. You may want to read a book that came out last year: "3 Years in Wonderland", by Todd James Pierce. This book tells many never before heard stories about the making of Disneyland.

I have a season pass and I never really thought about the different smell of the water. But I 100% know the smell you're talking about. Just never thought of it like that.

As a lifelong Disneyland-goer, I've always noticed a particular aroma on rides like Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain. One person told me that they mix in something into the air conditioning that cuts down on dust but didn't know what it is. Fun fact though - by chance I picked up some body soap from Caress called "Enchanting Secret with Mulberry Blossom & Midnight Essense" and to me, it smells just like Haunted Mansion. Too bad Old Spice's Matterhorn deodorant smells nothing like Matterhorn.
