Joe's statement about the New South he grew up in echos my experience along the same age timeline. Racism was not tolerated, period, among school kids and adults working to improve society. I also know the derision caste upon Southerns by others in country and myself felt anger towards their hubris and blindness towards their own racial problems. The only requirement of being Christian is belief. That is it. No evidence required, just feelings. If people had to know and supply evidence for knowledge, belief wouldn't even be a thing. The whole idea of belief is not knowing. Faith is just not knowing and acting as if one knows. If you know something, you don't need to believe it. If the ridiculous god idea had any merit what so ever, it wouldn't require belief, it would rely upon demonstrable knowledge. When someone asks you to believe something, they are asking you to be irrational and accept something as true without good reason. I won't ask for belief.

Our liberty to live without fear of being shot while doing normal things, like shopping, supersedes what some perceive as their right to own any kind of weapon they want. The 2nd amendment does state that firearms should be for well-regulated militias, but that part gets ignored. It needs to be updated and defined properly for modern day. We have laws for every other dangerous thing in our country. You can own and drive a car, which used to be the #1 cause of death in children but was surpassed by gun deaths in recent years. To own a car, it must be registered, the driver must pass a test and keep a current licence. You must pay yearly fees, keep insurance, and you're not allowed to drive any vehicle you want on public roads. You can't drive a formula one race car on public roads, or a tank. We also can't buy dynamite or sulphuric acid unless licenced and highly trained to use them, for very specific purposes. The Constitution has been amended 27 times, and it's time to change the second to correspond with modern times. Our forefathers were talking about muskets and cap & ball pistols. Our forefathers also owned slaves, and only white male landowners were allowed to vote. Women couldn't own property, and didn't get the right to vote until 1920, the year my mom was born. Her mom didn't get the right to vote until 1924, but still couldn't in Oklahoma because of the threats of violence against native Americans.

It's not just the evangelicals, it's the Catholics as well. From what those I know have told me it is largely the anti-choice on abortion folks. These tend to be one issue voters. This in my humble opinion is a foolhardy way to vote when we obviously have so many other issues to deal with in this country.

He posted on his social media that if we indicted Trump, the whole world is going down. Well I would disagree, because the whole world is going down regardless. He really disappointed me and my mother, so we both left that church, and we each joined another churches. Only to find out that my church has those same talking points about abortion. So I left that church. My mother is trying out a new church. It seems like Satan is at work here.

This discussion and the inside offered by Joe at the end is so important. Evangelicals were indeed the moral authority of America that lead the battle against slavery and fought for women's suffrage. But those battles also divided them, and some Evangelical churches became increasingly soft on racism and sexism. Then everything worsened after the monkey trials and prohibition, where they were subjected to national ridicule in the press for their temperance and creationism, ...until someone came along to tell them they could be "great" again.

I live near Lancaster PA, and I am constantly amazed when I drive through the area and see TRUMP signs on homes that are clearly Amish, or old order Mennonite. The only thing that I can come up with is that many of them don't have TVs or social media. In Buttigieg's book, he wrote that Trump chose Pence because he needed credentials with the ultra conservative Christian church, and Pence accepted because he saw that his own political future was in jeopardy.

I was a young adult in Macon,Ms. 1973 the blacks were at the mercy of the white. Black rural churches were burnt with no charges files. While eating inside a hamburger joint, black man entered wearing suit, tie(family in car outside). Most likely had just came out of their church service on this Sunday afternoon. Proprietor screamed nig.. get out of hear. The only thing the family man came in for was to order take out food for his family. Joe must have been in a far different Ms. that I experienced. This is not isolated situation. I can remember more like this than not. The signs of colored restrooms(outhouses) and water fountains were still enforced. I had migrated from Il. The 3 years in Ms. was a real education.

If your pregnancy is not viable then a church should pay for all your health care, they should have to play videos of what a body feels like when it goes septic as that is what they demand of women. Matter of fact, if the church demands a women breed they need to cover ALL the expenses, hospital, pre and post natal, child’s healthcare, child care, education and of course money for book because the Christian’s closed the public libraries, that is elementary, middle, high school, college, masters and PhD, plus health care until the child they demanded will need clothes, healthcare, after school programs, sports, arts, pets. So I think the churches should pay out 5 million per required breeding, failed or not. 20 million bonus for anytime a doctor says the law will not let her care for her patient. Oh and if you choose to incarcerate either doctor or women. The whole congregation of a church goes to jail. In particular the money should flow to women of color who already face staggering maternity fatality rates. Thieve laws are cruel to women, harmful and abusive. I would settle for vasectomies for every male at age 12 and every male in this country right now irregardless of age. Only reversible when you can prove you can afford a child and have the emotional maturity to be a parent.

And thank you professor for pointing out that a lot of this crap we're seeing from the right is rooted in America refusing to properly answer the question of how Black people fit in the fabruc if American society following the Civil War. Yes we had Reconstruction, but Lincoln's vuce president and successor following his death Andrew Johnson largely interfered with the efforts to integrate Black Americans into the larger society to the point of finding himself the first president in America to be impeached. Ulysses Grant further slowed down progress by agreeing to abruptly end Reconstruction in 1877. The first iteration of the KKK was forned in the South soon after. Of course, Jim Crow would rear its ugly head in the early parts of the 20th century due to fear of cultural shifts tied to involvement in World War I and Black Americans seeing the first tastes of what lufe without segregation looked like when serving as soldiers during that War. Mire recent examples of that fear showed up following the election of Barack Obama to the presidency with the ridiculous stories that he was really a Muslim born in Kenya and the questions about the legitimacy of his birth certificate, even from those who considered themselves liberal and Democrats, when it's a part of public record that the man was born in Hawaii which last time I checked has been this country's 50th state since 1959, three years before Obama's birth. America dug its heels in on that fear by electing Donald Trump as Obama's successor, who even during the 2016 campaign that he was not shy about getting in bed with racists and exhibiting his own racism as if the birtherism he inspired against Obama wasn't clear evidence. Remember the stupidity of his saying he had a wonderful conversation with the president of Puerto Rico following the hurricane that ravaged the island, when he himself was president of Puerto Rico since it is a part of the United States? Mind you he left Puerto Rico to rot following saud hurricane because he was mad that Puerto Rican officials dared criticise his corruption and incompetence in the White House. So yeah evangelical moral corrosion didn't just appear out of a vaccuum.

Wow. I feel this is the most powerful segment that I have ever seen on Morning Joe. Joe's testimony is very moving and very revealing.
