Only 22 passes/gm while going 15-0 is misleading... JJ first 9 games (Avg score of 41-7) - Usually sat by halftime due to blowouts. Zero minutes played of any 4th quarter. His avg BEFORE he sat in those games: 17-23, 237yd, 2TDs, on exactly 75.7% completion. That is some serious HEAT !🔥 Sitting so much skews what his totals "would have been" had he stayed in and ran up the score (...like some other QBs did). JJ's next 5 games (Avg score of 29-16) - Tough grind-out games vs the #2, #3, #4, #16, and #39 ranked defenses in the nation. With UM's defense ranked #1, these were never gonna be high scoring, stat-padding, shoot-outs. JJ made every clutch play, including game winning drive in CFP vs Alabama, the whole field in 1:34, with no timeouts, scored TD to send to OT. Also made at least 5-6 "Wow!" plays in each of these games, including "Throw of the Year" BETWEEN 2 buckeyes running shoulder to shoulder(the #2 defense in nation). Then title game (score 34-13) - No disrespect, but after THAT stretch, facing Wash's (#54 ranked) defense was a breeze! In 1st qtr ALONE, JJ passed 3-5 for 55yds, but Michigan rushed for 174 yd on 9 attempts, with 2 TDs, and a FG. Game was over. 🏆

Excellent analysis, illuminating The stats about passing attempts are a little misleading since McCarthy didn’t play the 4th quarter in several games last season. Other QBs ranked above JJ had monster talent at multiple WR positions. Had JJ gone to OSU and played with the WRs there, he would have been the number 1 pick in this draft and would have gaudy passing numbers that would have been overly inflated like every previous QB in that system. So playing in a pro-style system with less talent hinders JJ’s ability? With each passing day, I’m becoming more and more of a JJ fan and kinda hoping Broncos draft him. But I also would love to tap into this amazing defensive class with our first pick since a QB this year won’t really change anything for us any time soon really here now.

He was a 5 star QB put into a system that emphasized a balanced offense. His 5 star abilities didn't disappear. He just got to show them a little less than other QB's put into pass happy offenses. But think about this. While other QB's were losing while passing for 300 or 400 yards he won games. Not just inconsequential games but big time pressure games. And he was asked to make plays constantly on third down with his arm or his feet. So he delivered constantly in pressure games or managed those games with fewer turnovers. He has so few bad games as a result that reviewers have to focus on them or specific plays to find flaws. Meanwhile JJ McCarthy won 2 undefeated Big Ten titles and beat OSU twice. Compare him with Drake Maye (pundits darling). Maye was not a 5 star QB. He went to a mediocre team in a mediocre league. He didn't win the starting spot so much as he inherited it from Sam Howell. It was his turn to basically throw for 300 yards a game. And instead of lifting the team beyond what Sam Howell lifted them they basically stayed the same. Meanwhile Maye got to make spectacular throws and missed on throws. His completion percentage actually went down this year. So McCarthy performed under pressure and helped his team win while Maye had less pressure and didn't elevate his team beyond mediocre. McCarthy had to be near perfect throwing mostly on third down while Maye didn't have to be anywhere close to being perfect and throwing on almost every down. And both need seasoning in the pros but McCarthy mostly needs more reps while Maye needs to work on a lot of fundamental stuff in his mechanics. If I'm a pro team trying to pick a winner I'm going with McCarthy. He's got the arm talent, the leadership qualities and he's performed under pressure in big games.

Absolutely loved this vid. The kid can play and just because he "hands the ball off" more than other comparable QBs does not mean he cannot do the "NFL" things well. I've tried to stress this to people and the take on him going out executing the gameplan in a good system like you said, why would you not want a guy that listens and does what his teammates need and coaches ask of him? Great vid and mark my words JJ will have one of the better careers in the NFL I personally think he's top 3 as far as NFL ready actually top 2.

@@cm55919 Because they had installed an offense that wins games and that plan included feeding their absolute work horse Blake Corum. They built a team to win in MI despite them only having 2 5 star recruits. It wasn't the JJ show where coaches let him throw 40 times a game just to bump his stock. Actually watch the games, he's the best player in this draft on 3rd down by a wide margin (which is huge in the NFL) he can do the NFL things well just because he didn't do them in college doesn't mean he's just incapable.

McCarthy is very underrated as a passer he has a very quick release sees the field has great pocket awareness is confident and can make all the pro level throws so yea I’d trade back and take him at around picks 6-10

27-1 is highest career winning percentage (.970) pro or college in over a half CENTURY. McCarthy's paaa completion percentage was higher than the last 2 QBs in this draft who win the Heisman trophy. He is by far the fastest QB in this draft with 4.4 in the 40. Against #9 PSU away, #2 ranked Ohio State University Buckeyes, against #15 Iowa, against #4 Alabama, against #2 Washington , he committed a TOTAL of ZERO turnovers of any kind. By contrast , the 5 star psu qb committed 2, the 5 star Ohio State QB committed 2, The iowa QB committed 3, The Bama QB committed 1and was repeatedly sacked, the Washington QB committed 2 turnivers and was repeatedly hurtied or sacked. Against CJ Stroud of Ohio State in Columbus , JJ threw bombs for 3 TDs and rushed for yet another td vs #2 ranked and favored Ohio Stare. Agsin JJ, Mister Clutch in big games vs highly ranked teams, committed ZERO turnovers of sny kind while Stroud committed at least 2 turnovers. At both the college and pro level, poise, good judgment, high IQ DO MATTER. See: Brady,Tom. It is so very often the difference between a hall of fame level or national championship winning QB and a bust. Owners, general managers, and coaches reading all the above JJ salient stats shoukd also know that ALL of the above UM JJ McCarthy led Wolverine victories contsin 1 other toyally amazing stat: In everyone of the above games, Michigan with McCarthy as the field general beat the opponent by a margin higher than the the experts' point spread! Finally, JJ McCarthy is the only QB who is NFL eady because he is the only QB who ran an NFL style offense. While JJ McCarthy kept beating highly ranked teams in his career guess which QB in this draft had almost ZERO victories over highly ranked teams ? The answer is overrated Caleb Williams. McCarthy not only had more rushing yards than Caleb , but also a higher yards per carry rushing average in 2023. McCarthy can beat you wiyh ge long passing bomb or with us feet. No QB in this dradt csn match his 3rd down conversion rate...or clutch wins. He is the best and most complete QB in this draft class. I predict da Bears will pick home state boy JJ McCarthy with the first pick in the 1st round. Time will tell. Barring injury, he will have a long NFLcareer, and he will likely be a superstar . Case closed.

The stats about passing attempts is a little misleading since McCarthy didn’t play the 4th quarter in several games last season. Other QBs ranked above jj had monster talent at multiple wr positions. Had JJ gone to OSU and played with the WRs there, he’s the number 1 pick in this draft and would have gaudy passing numbers that would have been overly inflated like every previous qb in that system. So playing in a pro style system with less talent hinders jj’s ability?

Look, I've got nothing bad to say about JJ. I like his intelligence and I really like his athleticism. But - I just don't get how people are projecting him as the number 1 or 2 pick overall and are comparing him to Stroud (Charles Davis just did this). I live in Michigan and have seen both play throughout their college careers. Stroud's throwing ability was consistently elite: snappy release, perfect placement, top shelf velocity, immediate and correct reads, accurate in the mid to long range, lots of yards and TDs. JJ didn't have any of that. Now of course that doesn't mean that he wouldn't have done it if given the opportunity, but Michigan was a Run and Defense driven team, that was well managed by JJ's opportunistic athleticism and careful throws - so we just don't know. To me, he looks more like a second to third rounder - which isn't an insult but a sensible placement based on his college performance. Dak, Kirk and Russ were lower round picks that turned out to be good starting QBs so I hope he surprises us, but I will be utterly shocked if say, he goes to the Vikes, starts his first year, and puts up a rating and numbers comparable to Kirk's.

He is elite there. For all this "he only hands the ball off", he had the third highest 3rd and long attempts at 58, which is 3 more than williams. He has the highest % of times thrown on 3rd and 6+ by a good amount, has a higher ay/a again by alot, and the highest competition % in these situations. His sack rate here is also low.
