Whether we cry during a sad movie, while chopping onions, or completely involuntarily, our eyes are constantly producing tears. Alex Gendler tracks a particularly watery day in the life of Iris (the iris) as she cycles through basal, reflex and emotional tears.

Britni Maxwell that’s a great question. I’ve had hot tears and salty tears, but interestingly not cold ones before. I think it has to do with body temp and your environment because the tears come out hot like our body temp is, but they seem hotter when you’re in a colder environment and vice versa.

Once when I was in 4th grade this girl was badly crying in my class and like all the students surrounded her so me and a few girls told the teacher that she was crying and while checking some books, she looks up at us with boring eyes and blunts out, "its good for her eyes" with an expressionless face and just resumes back to her work. Joy Cheng Reflex tears. We tear up when we yawn to rejuvenate our eyes so they become more refreshed so you can stay awake longer. Yawning itself is to get more oxygen running through your blood

lol I didn't even notice that Onion and Iris were "lesbian" until I saw the comments. I had to rewatch the video. That's so irrelevant of what the video is about, anyways, this was so interesting! I didn't know we had three types of tears! And emotional tears are helpful. They are a sign of affection and even help remove the tightening of the feels. Crying *too* much is little over the top, but it helps to certain extent, sort of releasing what's built up on the inside ^^ That's what I think, anyways :)

Either way if he was to make that metaphor it should have been the more natural metaphor of a straight couple, why? because we were obviously meant to be that way. Animation isn't quick and easy it takes time, he made the detail that the onion was a she in the animation as well, besides he most likely doesn't say this shit off the top of his head, he probably wrote it down. Yes, it is. Part of the reason is that when you yawn, you squeeze your eyes tightly shut. The way that tears flow is that they come out of your lacrimal gland, which is on the upper outer side of the top of your eye; they then flow - in a film - across your eye obliquely downwards and inwards. The tiny black dot on your lower eyelid is called a punctum, and that's where your tear duct starts and where the tears drain away. But if you squeeze your eyelids tightly shut, you close off the punctum, stopping the tears flowing across your eye and into the tear duct, so they build up in the eye. This makes you cry a little bit, which is why tears appear when you yawn.
