It's one of Jim Carrey's most hated films, but why?

I think this is one of Jim Carrey's best roles. "Chip" was a goofy, eccentric character who also had his dark moments. You know what? Any person who is goofy, eccentric, or bubbly (they can be the happiest damn person you've ever met) has a dark side. They've been through some shit in their lives. Some are good at hiding it, some aren't. Chip is one of those people who tries to hide it by being what he thinks is a fantastic friend, but he ends up cracking and letting the darkness take over as he is rejected by Steven. I think this is a role that we needed from Carrey. He obviously had a clear character in his mind, and I think he portrayed it pretty damn well. Again, this is one of Carrey's best roles. Wow, I didn't expect to write this much.

Hell yeah, I always loved it, I was just 12 and English isn't my first language, but getting some of Chip's dialogue, references and jokes later on was damn cool, I was so intrigued at the time for what I was missing and had no pc/internet to do some research and understand the whole thing but I enjoyed it every time I saw it and of course, the script, acting, humor, just seeing a different version of Jim was great. Now that I think about it, I think I even enjoy the fact that it just isn't everyone's cup of tea (I devour everything comedy).

I thought the film had funny moments. I didn't like his weird voice. I found the family invasion unbelievable and annoying. I thought Carrey wasn't in his dramatic prime. the film failed for many reasons. The Truman show made us laugh in spots but also appreciate one of the greatest leading man performances EVER. I think Carrey was too conditioned to think 'audences need my zany antics non stop' to realise he could've played this role much better. It came on the tail end of Carrey's huge comedy hit run and that's why it just didn't 'work' though it wasn't terrible

-Even Kyle Gas makes a BRIEF cameo in this movie, pretty sure there's like 2 shots of him as one of the rando's in front of their television sets. Looking back on it as somebody who was born in 1994 and grew up with alot of Jack Black's goofier, more central roles in movies, its also kinda neat to see how he can be an average Joe side character who's even a bit sarcastic and moody. I agree as well that Carrey is quite stellar in this movie, his imaginative acting portrays the character in a dark comedy style that in my opinion was well achieved in alot of mid-late 90's era films.

I like The Cable Guy. I think people didn't like it at the time because he jumped off the diving board of slapstick comedy to dark comedy. He was trying to break the typecast mould. He eventually did break the typecast mould with The Truman Show, Spotless Mind, and some others. As an artist trying to break the mould I have to hand it to him. And as a dark twisted comedy its not bad, if dark and twisted comedies are your thing.

I think I understood it pretty well at the time and I did like it and didn't understand why other people didn't, but I also didn't like Jim Carry's mainstream movies at the the time though, so maybe that explains why I enjoyed it.

Thats probably why Jims line "we could have been blood brothers, but you're too needy. Ask Robin." hit so well, because jim's character was even more needy and he knew it but was in psycho mode lol

@user-nv2wt4hi8t Жыл бұрын
Funnily I don't see Broderick's relationship with Robin in the same light, despite the fact I generally find Broderick characters dislikeable, more-so for him than anything with the character. Robin, I find, is on a worse level even to Steven for just being utterly dislikeable. Fair enough, she wanted space and asked Steven to move out following his proposal, that's a difficult situation for him to be in but understandable regardless. So it seems like they're at a point where they're taking some time apart from each other. Only, following Steven's Sleepless in Seattle moves suggested by Chip, she suddenly seems interested in rebuilding their romantic relationship that she decided was moving too fast. That's all well and good. But then she completely leaves Steven on the hook to go on a date with another man and not only expects him to understand but derisively tells him that, in spite of her recent pushes for them to begin returning to where they were, unwittingly motivated by Steven's saying all the right things, 'that doesn't mean we're officially back together', telling him she loves him but that she's still going on a date with another man, which is utterly bizarre for someone acting like they're still working towards being together again but just need some space from the urgency that a proposal brought on. That's just knowingly leaving Steven completely hanging while she shops around for other men and asserting to him that's what she should be doing when he checks her on it. Again, after meeting Chip perhaps three times maximum, she invites him to a game night with Steven's family without telling Steven despite it being a night in with his family and again, almost scornfully, condescendingly acts like he should be cool and casual that she invited Chip despite Steven's noticeable panic, regardless of whether or not she knows the recent events, not even taking the time to hear out the man who's supposed to be her boyfriend. But that's besides the point as, even when Steven addresses Chip as 'a lunatic and a felon', she just shuts him down with 'No, don't go. Steven, you are being an asshole' in front of his own family, the family of a man she was happy to play the field with just days before, despite his vocal protests. And yet they happily end up together by the end of the movie? I'd like to call it a 'maybe they deserve each other' but even despite Steven's flaws (perhaps they're meant to be 'everyman defects') he's far better than Robin who is just awful. And again, maybe that's part of the dark humour that I'm just not gelling with, that everything is closing in on Steven whether it makes sense for it to or not. But man does Robin suck.

I remember when this film came out, and back then, it actually seemed to fit it's time better than it would now. It was intended to be a send up to the Psychological/Suspense/Thriller genre that was really big back in the 90's. Starting back with Fatal Attraction back in 1987, and continuing with Misery, Unlawful Entry, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, The Crush, Single White Female. and many others to follow. Films that where all about ordinary people who cross paths with the wrong person, that at first seem unassuming if somewhat off, start getting a little to close, and become a nightmare for everyone involved. The Cable Guy just took that more seriously dramatic subgenre which everyone was already familiar with and poked fun at it. And I thought it worked pretty well.

I actually liked this film! Jim Carrey portraying a stalking over-obsessive clingy psychopath was actually rather clever! And yes, I have met someone like this before. There was this guy who had no friends in my school so out of sympathy, I decided to befriend him. Only to result in bad consequences. He thought he was my best friend when I never entirely knew him and he wanted to replace my current best friends, including getting too personal with me. I decided to end our friendship and he got me into trouble a lot.

There is no such thing as a true fan. Jim Carrey is my favourite comedian and I love nearly all of his movies. (Strangely enough, because Jim Carrey played the Riddler, I became a superhero fan so... yeah) However, I mostly may be against people who say they are true fans because they always say shit like, "If you were a true fan, you would be against this new stuff they do" because a fan is a fan, no matter how much of a fan you are.

I never knew this film was so hated, it's my favorite Jim Carrey movie by far. I found it just dark enough without being too jarring and just goofy enough without falling into the typical overly goofy Carrey acting that turned me off of some of his more typically beloved films. As for whether or not Carrey's character was realistic enough, I may not know anyone who is that clingy and stalkerish, but I think everyone knows someone who was raised by television, or just had parents who weren't very present in their lives, which gave Carrey's character a depth that had really been lacking from all his other roles. I also liked the usually subtle messages of the negative impact that TV can have on people, and the obsessive interest we have towards the mentally ill, as evidenced by the scenes dealing with the trial of a famous actor who murdered his brother, both played by Ben Stiller, running throughout the film. It gets a little hamfisted in the scene where the TV goes out and the schlubby guy at 5:21 starts reading a book with a little "huh, this is actually pretty good" expression, but even then it's more subtle than you'd expect in a comedy like this. I also really liked the ending, where Carrey nearly falls to his death, greatly injuries himself, is being taken to the hospital via helicopter, and the guy at 6:18 starts acting friendly with Carrey's character, to which Carrey responds in a way that implies he's going to do the same thing he had been doing to Broderick's character again with this new guy. A lesser movie would've made an ending where Carrey's character somehow grows out of his craziness and completely changes his personality to give it a more happy spin, but having him start up another obsessive "friendship" gives it a more appropriately creepy end that makes the viewer question how many times Carrey has done this before, how many times he'll keep doing it, and just how far he'll go with it. I think this movie is funnier than "Liar Liar" and is genuinely more intelligent than "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind", and I would love to see it get a sequel or a remake. Maybe even something that makes it even weirder and darker to keep up with how much films have changed in the past nearly 20 years.

I, personally liked 'The Cable Guy'... In my view, the soundtrack was good, as well & I have almost every song from the movie on my computer, but, that's another story for another time. If I remember it, correctly, both Roger Ebert & Gene Siskel didn't like this movie, but, in my eyes, it was good... Not a timeless classic & a memorable role like 'The Mask', 'Dumb & Dumber', or, anything like that, but, an acceptable film.

Love the post! Classic flick. One thing you missed tho: the way they use soundtrack, and integrate it into the scene, Star Trek during the midevil times battle, (during which Carrey sings along, “BLLLLLDAH! BLLLLLDAH!”👌😂) Filter during the basketball game, even at the end when Broderick asks his real name, and Carrey says “Ricardo....Ricky Ricardo,” and the I love Lucy theme swells in the background..... I’ve never seen a movie do that since. Thanks for the post.
