I actually love this about Pastor John not that he avoids the topic but his immersion in the most important topic Christ! And I've noticed personal the more focused on Christ I am at any given time the more sober I am to all of life and gives me what I should know about any given subject. Because Christ is relevant to all things. He is wisdom! What he speaks on (and I think it wise) is what he knows, not what he doesn't, and as easy as it has become to be distracted in this war, by politics in and outside of the church we would all be wise to narrow our gaze in Jesus! To point people to Christ to truly know Him and the culprit from which the true war is waged is the wisest position ANYONE can take in this age. I've seen so many get all wrapped up in politics, that simple love and devotion to Christ diminishes badly. And the ramifications are not only personal but corporate. I'm not saying we shouldn't be aware of the political climate of our day yes we should, but I don't believe it should be our focus or barometer for spiritual things. Especially us who walk after the Spirit and not the flesh. I believe Christ, knowing and loving Him will make you wise, who Himself said that wisdom will be justified of her children. Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

I am really starting to struggle with the temptation of going after political topics. When I have commented on social issues in the past, I was able to easily tie them back to the Gospel (about God's willingness to forgive abortion, and heal people of homosexuality). The problem now, however, is that there are other issues that come up as a result of lies and short-sighted plans (free education, etc.) that I really want to lash out against. I have been keeping quiet because I don't see how they can reasonably be connected to the Gospel. If I were to discuss the problem as an application at some point that might be fine, but I don't think I should go out of my way to debate these things with people. I think it glorifies God most if I put all my efforts toward mastering His Word. Thanks @John Piper

Jesus didn't get involved in the political arguments. That is not why Jesus came. Paul refused to get into the political arguments. Paul was determined to preach nothing but the gospel of Jesus christ and him crucified on the cross. And to lead people to repent of their sins.

John Piper is one of my favorite teacher because he sticks with scripture. I know this will sound crazy but I'm running for office and I'm nowhere near being a politician in the sense. But, I find it very easy to take my stand as a preacher and one who chooses to serve the community in a different capacity. We choose Jesus which is much easier at the local of level government than in the higher positions. I get to be the light by being the example of becoming all things to all in hopes that I may win some. I teach people we cannot judge the world but judge those that are within. It is a very different call but it is a very powerful opportunity.

@@SunnyBlueSky149 to be honest at my level of government abortion is not a vote on the table. However, every believer votes on abortion when we neglect to share the Gospel because laws will not stop abortion alone. Their has to be an alternative presented to the people who choose to that route to begin with.

Politics is a Divisive thing I think if we can get all the issues to be pre-political then everyone would stand by issues then we can make some steps to destroy identities in politics to then just speak about facts from either side with no vile that said tribes are a thing and if you are someone like Richard Spencer or really any communist that appeals to a superficial attribute then we are divide that is why I love the bible even from a worldly perspective because everyone is equal

It's better that politics are avoided I don't watch this to hear about politics. That doesn't mean that the word doesn't have political applications. But it's not just about that it's about God and it's about everything and life. Political transactions do influence a soul, but it's much better that this is not political. It us removed from that influence. I don't think that the politics are too complicated for John. It's just not what he is doing. Politics are more transient there is a lot to keep up with and it is very dynamical like chaos theory and statistics and math. Being christian and acting as the same force isn't as dynamical but also in ways it is more. It's even harder to keep track of both. And this helps because more often than not I find also a lot of insight into whatever I have gone over today in the word and how John is guided to speak on certain topics that are biblical and likely have nothing to do with politics for him. There are so many wats this can be seen. It's not just here it's visions I have about things and then see on the news that that's what they mean there's a lot of stuff. I agree with this. Because it is important to help the church and I am not sure I'm really helping America be anything other than less slavedriving to christians. (I support capitalism, as a form of work and about building a life that is long-standing and not reliant upon others capitalism is important and so is socialism in the church.) The point is not to be reliant on anything other than God.

+Evan U It's not Piper you're in disagreement with; it's God's word. You and I aren't in control. God is. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. Who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills. And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them?

Matthew Dyer. Your response isn’t showing up for some reason. I saw you’re using the “golden chain of redemption” as a proof text for Calvinism. I would like to discuss it with you and hopefully your post not coming through is just a KZbin glitch. First I’d like to know if you agree with me that Paul is specifically addressing the Jews from Romans 2:17-11:13. Here’s something to consider.... The Church at Rome Audience I believe that Paul is writing an occasional epistle to the Romans. The Jews and Gentiles weren't getting along. Once the Jews were allowed to return to Rome, they found their church to be quite different from when they left. Paul corrects their attitude towards the Gentiles. He directs his conversation towards the Jews for a while, then to the Gentiles...... Rom 2:17 ¶ Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God, He then condemns their attitude in the remaining verses of this chapter. He continues his discussion Rom 3:1 ¶ What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? 9 ¶ What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; He uses the phrase "we" and "Jews", speaking in the first person plural. Rom 4:1 ¶ What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? Abraham is the father of all who are in Christ, according to the promise, but not according to the flesh. That would be the Jews. Rom 7:1 ¶ Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? The Jews know the law. (Rom 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:) Rom 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. The ones who have the firstfruits of the Spirit are the Jews.... Luk 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem Acts 3:25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. Acts 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. Rom 1:16 ¶ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Jas 1:1 ¶ James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. 18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Back to Romans..... Rom 9:24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? "Us, Jews" is again in the first person plural. He switches his attention to the Gentiles here..... Rom 11:13 ¶ For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office Notice the direction he gives them..... Rom 14:1 ¶ Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. 2 For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. 3 Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. The Jews had trouble eating what was once "unclean". The Gentiles were to be careful not to offend. So the purpose of all of this, is that when Paul was speaking to the Jews, he quoted a lot more scripture and assumed they would know what he meant..... Rom 10: 6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) 7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; This makes no sense without knowing this..... Deu 30:11 ¶ For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. 12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 14 But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it. Paul was speaking to the Jews in Rom 8. This is why he could say "we know that all things work together for good to them who love God". Would you agree so far?

+Evan U That was a lot of reading, and if there was a point somewhere in it all refuting any of the scriptural basis for the doctrines of election and predestination, I missed it. I listed many biblical references, not only from Romans but throughout the Bible, supporting those doctrines. I don't have the will or the time to follow you through an application of intellectual gymnastics to finally arrive at whatever point you're going to make. If it is possible, just make your point and I'll decide if it is scriptural and compelling enough to change my mind.
@evanu6579

Matthew Dyer The point was whom Paul was speaking to. You can’t use proper hermeneutics without knowing that. The foreknew in chapter 8 are the same ones as in chapter 11. It’s the forefathers who loved God. Paul is using them as an example for the love God has on the church. If God did that for them how much more will He do for us. Rom 5: 6 ¶ For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. Rom 4: 18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. 19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb: 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. 23 ¶ Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; 24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. Compare these passages with “the golden chain”. Paul actually had a very fluid thought throughout his letter. It’s all connected. Rom 11: 1 ¶ I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, So think of Abraham for an example (as Paul has been doing) for that golden chain and see how He then points to the church as receiving so much more than even Abraham.... Rom 8: 31 ¶ What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? God bless.

AMEN, Pastor John. My hunch is that Jesus, too, is "200%" more interested in gaining committed Disciples than in any political and economic system in which God placed them. Socialist, Capitalist, Fascist, atheistic and pluralistic systems all fall under the earthly kingdoms addressed in Psalm 2: they are at war with the LORD and His Christ! "Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." (Matthew 22:21, Mark 12:7, Luke 20:25) "But to help the Church be the Church: the radical outpost of the Kingdom of Christ, no matter what kind of America it happens to be ..." So crucial that we keep our attention laser focused on Mark 8:36, as you said. Thank you! May God strengthen you and hold you close.

Socialism is an atheist philosophy describing the exact behaviour the Holy Spirit led the first Christians to engage in. Acts 2:45 and Acts 4:34-35. As an Irish Christian I have never understood why Americans favour those who preach Christianity without practicing this behaviour over those who practice it without preaching Christianity since the latter sounds like a good "Caesar" to allow Christian communities to flourish. I suspect Christianity informed socialism more than most socialists would like to admit but many many many socialists are Christian and favour these politics because they are Christian. I think the American attitude of so many right wing Christians is akin to the same corrupt practices and influences that drive the prosperity gospels from the same exact geographical region.
