I have a theory on this. Vinnie was a loose cannon, giving the Leone's a bad reputation and not passing up money to Salvatore. Sal didn't like this and possibly had a sit down with Vinnie about the matter. Vinnie likely agreed but instead of changing his attitude he continued doing the same things. This outraged Salvatore, however he couldn't be seen to kill a made man without approval from the other families. Salvatore didn't have a choice but to let it go. Fast forward a few weeks and Toni gets a call from Vinnie asking him to meet him at the docks. Toni goes there but Vinnie turns on him. Toni then kills Vinnie and his crew. Salvatore finds out but instead of killing Toni he gives him a "pass" because Salvatore no longer has to deal with Vinnie. The events of lcs unfold after that. A couple of years later Toni is promoted to caporegime

It's imposible to run big crime family like the Leones without people in these positions. Let's take a deep dive on this one. When Sal and Tony are on the lam, leaving Portland and Salvatore later being arrested Leone family still present at their turfs, running their rackets. If there were no capos or administration (underboss and consigliere) - it would just fall apart without any leadership on the streets. Can also have his crew of associates while also in an official crew under a captain. Captain (Caporegime) - Runs a crew of soldiers and associates, money maker, also killer if the opportunity arises. Underboss - Number 2 under the Boss. His job is to basically monitor all of the captains and report to the boss of what’s going on inside the family. Consigliere - he’s an advisor to the boss, but also he’s the person you go to when you have beef with another member of the family to help iron things out. Boss - Self explanatory. 1. Sometimes associates who are not Italian are treated as made guys based on the work they put in or money they make. 2. Any official member of a family can beat up an associate for whatever reason & nothing can happen to them. 3. Official members can be shelved - shelving means when you’re out on a shelf and put a label as persona non grata meaning you are not welcomed in the family & are not to be approached for whatever reason. 4. Captains can be broken & replaced by a member of his own crew. 5. Families have captains based on neighborhood & you can say specialty. Most guys aren’t money makers.

Claude's case was quite similar to JD's: Salvatore giving their non-Italian associate a promise to being made in his organization if they do some big jobs for him (Being a double agent against the Sindaccos and sinking the Cartel ship, respectively), only to betray them in the end. In GTA III, it's said that Salvatore betrayed Claude because he got paranoid and jealous that Maria fell in love with Claude, but there is a strong possibility that Claude was always being used, just like JD.

The fact that there is Maria's fault here - I partially agree. But only partially. Would Sal have betrayed Claude if Maria hadn't lied to him about the affair? The answer is YES. Even without Maria, Salvatore betrayed Claude. You may ask: for what? He promised him everything he want after the ship. This is the main pitfall. Recall that Don Salvatore, in addition to cruelty, cynicism, narcissism and paranoia, has another quality: he is a perfect manipulator. It's as simple as two and two: Claude is not Italian, rather French-American, not from their family, came from the street, he doesn't need to join anywhere, he's just a mercenary. And knowing how Sal became violent and dangerous paranoid after CJ's betrayal in 1992, when he robbed Caligula’s Casino, he initially did not trust Claude, first of all, as an outsider. That's why he said: ask for what you want, you'll be my mafia member - he manipulated him to make the Leone Family the sole monopolist in Portland, and then, when he completed his task and no longer needed him, he would drain him like a used condom. Personally, my opinion is that Salvatore initially betrayed Claude, and the whole operation "Bomb on the Base" was his cunning plan: the Colombians leave Portland in exchange for Claude's head. He conceived the whole operation "Bomb on the base" only for a truce with the Cartel and the murder of Claude. And it would have been great if it hadn't been for Maria. I think she knew about the impending betrayal, and it was because of him that she argued with him and foolishly lied to him about the affair and left him once and for all, which finally strengthened Sal's paranoia: either he’ll take me out or I‘ll take him out. But Maria warned Claude and saved him from inevitable death by showing that she cared about him. And she had the strength and conscience to admit her stupidity and apologize to him. The fate favoured Claude that he met a girl like Maria. So to accuse Maria alone of being such a damn bitch and to justify Salvatore of being a poor and miserable victim is complete hypocrisy.

Loved the video but have to point out a few things. The rule about being full Italian has been altered a few times though you are mostly correct. For awhile (and in some places still) the mafia were accepting members who were half Italian on their father's side. It was put back into place about full Italians in the early 2000's after the big crackdowns but not sure about now. Also, Phil Bell was not a capo. He was an associate but one of importance. Ray even points this out in an argument when Jimmy is deciding who to kill. "Remember you're just an associate Phil." Phil is not your average associate just trying to make his way however. Think like Jimmy Conway (Robert Dinero) from Goodfellas. There are certain associates with status in the mob. They're high earners or close friends with mobsters in high positions, so they have a bit more status than your average mobster. That's what Phil is. Phil can't be made because he's Italian on the wrong side so even that wouldn't work out for him. Which leads to my next point. Tom Hagen in the Godfather. Yes he was consigliere for the Corleone's, but it came at a price even in that story. It's implied that the Corleone's were looked at as becoming weak when they lost Genco (their previous consigliere) and were looked down on for allowing Tom to have the position. So that with some other things leads to people starting to inch in and take on the Corleone's, when before they wouldn't have. Even though he was Vito's unofficially adopted son, the Corleone's caught flack for bringing him into the business officially. Just a few things I wanted to point out, though not sure it actually matters but just in case. Good video by the way, been loving listening to these thus far.

Not all made men/soldiers kill as well. But mostly they do, to get inducted into a family. Rarely, like a case like Michael Franzese he was inducted by his father and blessing due to his father's reputation as well. And again, not all of them kill, some earn, some kill. I think Mickey tells you to drop him off because Rockstar themselves couldn’t find any logical excuse for why can’t you put the car in the crusher. If for example you kill Casa before arriving at the meat factory, mission failed screen will tell you that revenge was not brutal enough or something. But here like I said they couldn’t find any excuse for why would you fail the mission. So they went with Mickey is dead.

I always was under the impression that Salvatore wasn't aware that Toni killed Vincenzo since Vincenzo was extremely secretive in his attempt to murder Toni. So likely when Toni killed Vincenzo on the boat nobody knew the two of them were there and that Toni was involved. Likely by the time Vincenzo's body was found Toni had already taken his place in the Mafia and they were busy with the Sicilians that he didn't investigate it that thoroughly. However even if he did know Toni killed Vincenzo. Toni would've had a fairly decent excuse since he was lured onto the boat by him and he had to kill him in self defense.

Honestly I think a big issue why they called JD a rat is because he proved that he was when he gave the information from the Sinddacos to the Leones. If youre an associate to a crime family and i approach you to give me information on them and you do it...even though you helped me, that tells me you're willing to talk and betray those who you're working for. So even though i can use you for information, you've already proven to me that you'll squeal the moment you're given a good offer...can't trust that...

In gta lcs Toni was only an associate ? of the Leone family I understand he becomes a made man later on in the game but in gta 3 in one of Joey Leones missions when Toni is first introduced to Claude Joey says "this is pops Capo Toni Cipriani" it really shows how much he ranked up in the family and who's not to say Toni became boss when Salvatore was executed by Claude.

Also, I wanna make an appointament in Gta 4 Phill wasn't a Capo, he was an associate, in Pegorino's first mission he talks about how promoting a guy like Phill would be bad for bussiness even though he was a good earner and loyal. And Ray even remarks this again in the mission 'Pest Control'. The reason they weren't taken serious is because they were very small time and from out of Liberty City, so they kept The Pegorinos out of comission.

Bit late to the discussion, but JD as a whole didn't have a good reputation. He was (presumably) paid well by the Sindaccos, but outside of running the Revue Bar he was probably seen as a joke by the family. He also has a history with the cops; he got arrested for having a relationship with an underage girl & had his computer checked for illegal material by the FBI. Guy was a mess. Him being untrustworthy and prone to panic, not to mention his previous crimes, probably would have made him freak out if he got grabbed by the cops. Salvatore/Vinny probably only went along with the scheme just so they could grab the Revue Bar and clip JD (a liability) when they were done.
