Since you named the title of the video such, I was expecting you to actually speak more than 45 seconds about little Rosalia . The truth is no mystery , her eyes are actually not entirely shut, but open just a slight. The rest of the effect is an optical illusion caused by the direction, and changing of the light in the room throughout different times of the day and month. Rosalia was removed from her original air tight glass enclosure several years ago , because it was found to have begun leaking air in , and mild mold had begun to grow on her. She was Re entombed in an entirely vacuum sealed , modern glass casket which is completely environmentally controlled. During this procedure, scientists had the opportunity to clean her up a bit , and discover the reason for the eye mystery.

The mummy has achieved further notoriety for a phenomenon in which her eyes appear to open and close several times a day, revealing her intact blue irises. In response to speculation about her moving eyelids, Piombino-Mascali stated that "It's an optical illusion produced by the light that filters through the side windows, which during the day is subject to change ... [her eyes] are not completely closed, and indeed they have never been". - Wikipedia

It's so sad seeing baby rosalia in person. She literally looks like she's just sleeping. Of course the catacombs are pretty creepy but I would say well worth a visit. It's a shame the vatican destroyed all information regarding how rosalia was embalmed because they considered it heresy. It would be amazing to know how she is so perfectly preserved. She was such a beautiful little girl and she looks like how you'd imagine a cherub would look with the rosy cheeks and curly blonde hair

I was OBSESSED with all things ancient Egypt as a child, and thus, mummies as well. I don't remember how it started, but I'm surprised my parents weren't completely freaked out and actually continued to buy me books about mummification. At age 19, I went on a study trip to Sicily with my school and naturally, we also visited the catacombs. Loved it. It certainly is kinda weird, if you think about it. But it's indeed remarkable how well preserved some of them are!

I've been there, and I've visisted all the seven sections of the catacombs, including the colatoio, and Rosalia's coffin. The air was so dry and full of dust I couldn't enjoy the visit much but it surely had a huge impact on me! First off, as you enter the place, you're immediately welcomed by an infinite corridor of hanged skeletons and mummies, then, as you walk your way throughout the place, there are cages and small sections. If you ask me, the most terrific one is the children section. I had chills, that definitely scared me. The virgins buried in their section were all crowned with flowers and then you have Rosalia's small coffin right in the center of the last section and it's astonishing. She looks so alive it looks like she's about to open her eyes and talk!

Rosalia wasn't quite 2 years old yet when she died, she would've turned 2 a week after her death (like literally 7 days, she died on december 6th and her birthday was december 13th). It's really sad. I wonder what her life would have been like if she'd lived. Poor little Rosalia. Also, while we're on the subject of mummies, can you do an episode on the children of llullaillaco? The child sacrifices and their bodies' preservation are both very sad and very fascinating.

@@angryatheist No, the children of llullaillaco were most definitely child sacrifices. They walked a thousand miles away from cuzco to mount llullaillaco, were drugged up with alcohol and coca leaves, and then they were killed once they got there. They did not die of natural causes. Those children walked up that mountain knowing that they were going to die.

I've been in the catacombs and saw her there; she really was a beautiful little girl and it's amazing how well they preserved her. The Capuchin Catacombs is one of the spookiest places on earth. A chance to face death up close and think about life. Go to Palermo, it's a fascinating city. The puppets, the strange architecture, the street food, and this haunted place made it even better than Rome for me. And that's saying quite a bit.

I had an idea for a comedic action mummy/zombie-themed film/cartoon where we have an undead mummy that awakens, everyone at first thinks it's an evil monster terrorizing people... but plot twist it's one of the good guys trying to save the living from the creepy real villains and their ancient necromancer leader, basically, this mummy becomes a sort-of supernatural superhero and revealed to be a part of a legendary team of ancient preserved heroes now known as the 'Zombie-Warriors'...
