Matt, I'd recommend looking at the polyphenol literature more deeply because there is a huge amount of not only epidemiology but *mechanistic* and animal research showing these are critically important compounds with major health benefits. Largely dismissing them and suggesting that it's "all about the fiber" is a big mistake IMO. Look at all the animal and human research with grape seed extract supplementation (purified grape polyphenols in capsule form).

Could also look at trials on cocoa flavanols (including Cosmos), many of which are supported by Mars (makers of CocoaVia). The academy of nutrition and dietetics now even recommend consuming 400-600mg flavanols daily for cardiometabolic health.

That's asking a lot, people to actually look into something deeper than the first section 😮... Yea if we followed all the advice on internet we would starve or be dead in a few days..😂

Feels like he went straight for the study methods and results looking for limitations and flaws. Would only have to read the introduction and discussion (and ideally follow some citations) to become aware of the context/field, then the study might make more sense. PhD or not, if you don't know the topic you only have your preconceptions.

Matt, you are among my high trust / credible source on health/longevity space. On this or another video you mentioned the importance of being "precise and accurate" with use of words, especially for scientists. The study you cited stated "up to one hour" while throughout the video you seem to only emphasized that the smoothie was left out for "one hour". For me, there is significant difference between " up to an hour" and "one hour". I hope you view this as constructive criticism.

I'm glad they let the smoothie sit for an hour because guess what, I'm letting mine sit for several hours since taking a smoothie with me is a convenient way to be able to obtain enough food while working or doing anything when I'm not taking my kitchen with me.

The less ripe the banana the fewer sugars and greater amounts of resistant starch. How ripe were the bananas used in those smoothies?? 😂

The main reason to not put bananas or anything with sugar into your smoothie is due to risk of formation of AGE's. Presumably the smoothie contains protein and your blender can create a bit of heat which combined with the sugar creates the risk of glycation.

Pomegranate is very healthy because of its polyphenol content of ellagitannin. However, the metabolite of ellagitannin, urolithans including urolithan A, is thought to be responsible for most of the health benefit of its polyphenol content, not ellagitannin itself. So I agree that even if the Flavan-3-ol is altered by banana, it is yet to know if it’s actuall better, worse, or neutral to the health benefit of the fruits smoothie.

Mr. Kaeberlein, what about the citric acid found in berries? Citric acid inhibits polyphenol oxidase. Berries contain citric acid!!!

I like bananas because they are convenient source for fiber and potassium which I think most lack. If one consume a high sodium diet, then potassium can balance it out. I'm not a scientist so don't take my word for it.

I add *half* a small to medium size frosen banana with my frosen wild blue berries and strawberries into my daily breakfast smoothies, and if i do another smoothie later that day it's without banana, but all spring and early summer I avoided the banana for faster weight loss (cutting as we call it in bodybuilding)😅

The worst thing about smoothies is that people do not get the fiber they need or go through the three-step digestive process required to properly absorb the nutrients in the smoothie ingredients. Dumping some fiber powder into your smoothie does little to provide health for your gut bacteria. We need to CHEW our smoothie to get our vital saliva involved in breaking down the nutrients into digestible form. Bananas can also be very constipating when ripe and extremely constipating (bananas develop a higher sugar content as they ripen. Higher sugar--more constipation) when over-ripe. Green or greenish bananas are the best choice. Ideally, you want to use not-yet-ripe organic bananas and put all the banana skin into the blender. Dr. Robert Lustig has a great piece right here -- kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKatpnecq9SUbLM -- about the best way to ingest a smoothie.

hi, i've been adding smoothies (no bananas) bc I'm just not able to get down enough whole foods to get in enough minerals and vitamins. Wondering if you lose 50 percent of the nutrients from a smoothie or more? Also does it matter if you drink it slowly so that you produce saliva in between sips? Thank you
@paulfiedler9128
@paulfiedler9128 Ай бұрын
@@deebrooks9488 Absolutely drink your smoothie slowly and enjoy it as much as possible. It is essential that your smoothie tastes good and satisfying. The tastier the ingredients, the more saliva you will produce. I'm not a big fan of flavored protein powders, but I use a half scoop of Sun Warrior vanilla protein powder because it's so delicious (to me) it makes me salivate immediately and all the way through ingesting it. My base ingredient is Whole Foods Organic Soy Milk, which is rich and creamy and a powerhouse of nutrients on its own. I add a whole cup of organic frozen strawberries, half a cup of organic frozen kale or spinach, and an organic beet powder to round out the taste and some energizing nitric oxide to the mix. I always use mostly pea and hemp protein and sometimes add a half scoop of grass-fed organic whey on days when I'm lifting weights and jogging. Make your smoothie a bit chunky and chew it while you drink it. It's much healthier and gets the digestive process kicked in from the first sip.

Smoothies are a no-no period. When you make anything into a smoothie, you've destroyed your food, and it is now processed food. You can't pulverize fiber and expect it to help you.

Couldn’t have put it better myself. It’s just like the difference between eating an orange and drinking orange juice. The fructose becomes way more available, and results in a spike in blood glucose levels. I see no reason to believe there’s any difference with bananas.

Biohacker Dr. Rhonda Patrick has recommended cutting out the bananas on more than one video. I don’t think she should be so concerned since she is aging right along despite the red light, heat and cold therapy, sulphoraphane, D3, magnesium and intense exercise. She might as well hang it up and drink the bananas.
