This was a test for Harry, with it including a wide range of factors. 1. Did Harry choose his friends wisely? Does he show care for and need of those friends? Are the friends Harry chose a strong benefit/support to him in dealing with extreme circumstances? 2. Test Harry (and his friends) for wisdom, thinking under duress, logic, when to lean on another's strengths rather than your own, ability/cooperation, problem solving, and lastly, test Harry's protection from his mother. 3. Test the prophecy. There was risk, of course. But Dumbledore was there quickly when Harry needed rescuing. And there was Snape AND Dumbledore looking out for Harry specifically the whole school year. Did it get a bit TOO risky at the conclusion? Yes. I believe so. But Dumbledore was actively looking to mitigate any risks, so not a "bad" guy move, but a necessity.

@G E T R E K T 905 I would disagree. Dumbledore kept secrets, true. But he always felt Harry had a chance to beat Voldemort. And he worked beyond the grave to make that chance as good as possible.

I certainly do think that Dumbledore was supremely manipulative. This, I think, is finally revealed in The Deathly Hallows in one of the final chapters where Harry views Snape's memories in the penseive. The truth of the collusion between Snape and Dumbledore finally came out.
@Art-st1yi3 жыл бұрын
He doesn’t trust anyone with the knowledge of Snape’s true allegiance. This puts Snape in danger. He orders Snape to kill him, and says that he has too, using his love for Lily against him. He manipulates Snape constantly, and then leaves him in an awkward position where his friends think that he’s evil. Dumbledore could have at least told McGonagal, as McGonagal could have learnt occlumency. Dumbledore could have even left a letter, instructing her to not open it till after Voldemort was defeated. He didn’t have to leave Snape in such an awful position

Nah I think the horcrux would still be destroyed. Fawx was hit by the killing curse so if there was a piece of soul it would be destroyed. For all of Dumbledores achievements and for all of his intelligence, the biggest thing he had against him was his fear. I will say this, Harry needed to confront him, had Dumbledore kept him the dark entirely and made him never to confront Voldemort Harry would have failed in the end. Harry needed to have that courage and strength, Dumbledore didn't have a lot of time to get Harry truly prepared for what he was facing for each year of Harry's schooling except the Third Voldemort was preparing to get strong again and he never truly knew when the time would come but each confrontation made Harry stronger and braver and more prepared. Yes Dumbledore never truly had Harry safety in mind his priority was stopping Voldemort but Dumbledore always gave Harry what he needed to face his Destiny when the time came.

@@johnslade9751 remember he’s really old and has seen a lot of people he knows die. In his age and wisdom he probably never saw Harry’s death as a super bad thing. He definitely cares for Harry though, he tells him how proud he is of him in book 5 or 6. He also talks about how people with age forget what it’s like to be young (I.e. forget that you don’t wanna fuckin die lol). But he knew that if Harry were to die he’d have to do it willingly. My big question is did Dumbledore ever duel Voldemort before OOTP? And how come Dumbledore never killed him during the first wizarding war? You’d think it be easy for him alone to just capture and interrogate a death eater and then move up the chain of command rather then found an “order” (13 people against millions isn’t much of a war).
@elenastanica46213 жыл бұрын
@@grantwalter2243 Dumbledore did not duel him because he knew it was pointless, Voldemort would have returned by using Nagini as a Horcrux. Dumbledore rejected Voldemort's request to teach DADA at Hogwarts because he knew that Voldemort wanted to use the students from pure blood families to steal magical items that would become horcruxes in the end. Voldemort got angry and upset, but avoided Dumbledore. Voldemort stole expensive artefacts anyway and Dumbledore knew what he was planning to make more horcruxes, at that time he could not get to him because he had no proof that Voldemort was evil and the ministry of magic did not support Dumbledore anyway. The last time a dark wizard showed up, Dumbledore was suspected to work with him, and he was prohibited from teaching DADA. Dumbledore knew that if he sorted out the problem in time he would have been jailed (given his dark past, it makes sense). He preferred to wait for Voldemort to make the 1st step and get dangerous enough, so he would not be jailed for stopping him. Voldemort worked for Burke and Borgins when he graduated from Hogwarts and this is how he got so many valuable items. Pure bloods were fascinated with dark magic and did everything to collect more dark items. Dumbledore interrogated Snape when he graduated from Hogwarts, he knew that plain interrogation would not work with Voldemort, but made the Order of Phoenix while Voldemort was gaining power and a crime file. Dumbledore needed to wait for Voldemort to get a crime file in order to be allowed to stop him legally and under safe conditions. BTW he wanted to punish him, not to kill him, to some people being jailed is worse than death. Dumbledore is not a murderer. He jailed his ex-best friend to save the Wizarding world. Grindelwald preferred death instead of his imprisonment, as a result, he decided to make Voldemort angry with him, so he would get killed.

I take this one step forward and theorize that Dumbledore leaked the location of the stone to Voldemort himself, to lure him out of hiding just in time for HarRys first year. Otherwise it’s such a coincidence. It’s established in CoS that Dumbledore has sources keeping tabs on Voldemort’s location in Albania.
@minniemcgonagall1393 жыл бұрын
Don’t think Dumbledore did. Dumbledore knew Voldemort would return at some point but he possibly didn’t know where Voldemort would be. And why go to a dark wizard and say ‘do you to return again?’ cause that would cause damage to the Wizarding and Muggle world if Voldemort managed to succeed in getting the Stone
@imqqmi3 жыл бұрын
I get the impression that it had 2 main goals: preparing Harry & co for the challenges ahead and forcing Voldemort to gain his own body. Voldemort discovered the problem of Harry's protection. Dd knew this of course, but it was more of an impedement to killing big V, without a body there's nothing to kill. And Harry had to die to kill the horcrux in him. Voldemort fixed the protection, gained a body and killed the horcrux in Harry. Kill other horcruxes and V is done. The real question is: did Harry meet Ron and Hermione by coincident or was DD already involved? Harry Potter books should've been called 'How Dumbledore manipulated and exploited the heck out of Harry Potter'.

I wonder if Dumbledore INTENDED for the obstacles to be easy, to throw Voldemort off his guard. He gets to the mirror in a breeze, only to realize he has absolutely no way of ever getting it out of the mirror. Dumbledore knew why, but Voldemort might never figure out how to get it, because he always wanted to use it. And by the time he went and grabbed a Death Eater for help, Dumbledore would probably have showed up and whooped him.

Even Harry and Ron figured out this theory by themselves. There is one more point in favour of this theory Why was the mirror of erised kept in some place other than the chamber And why was the invisibility cloak given to Harry again after he lost it Plus , Dumbledore knew that Harry had her mother's protection so there was a chance he could again defeat the dark Lord, being inside Hogwarts, voldermort couldn't gather an army so it would be 1 on 1 for Harry and voldy , that is why I appreciate if this was really Dumbledore's intention What was Edit . When ron and hermione were going to the owlery , they met Dumbledore and he said, Harry has gone after him hasn't he? He already knew....

@yash17563 жыл бұрын
Dumbledore has been actually wrongly judged in my opinion. I know he was somewhat ambitious and hungry for power(there are some proofs for it within the books), but at the end of day his intentions were NEVER BAD. He wanted good of the Wizarding World, without even caring for his own life. And he knew from the starting that he might've had to sacrifice Harry for it, and he prepared Harry for it all the years he could. He was not selfish or evil by doing this to Harry. He was just doing this for a better good. Just think about it, what would've been the point of Harry existence, if Dumbledore managed to save Harry but the Wizarding World was lost? Would Harry himself prefer this or giving his life to save the Wizarding World? Harry and Dumbledore were quite similar characters with the possible exception of Dumbledore being a bit power hungry. Dumbledore did not want Harry to despair or live his life knowing that he will die while trying to save the World, and therefore decided against to mention to Harry his true plans.

Here's an idea for a video topic, because I don't think I've ever seen it explicitly stated in any official Harry Potter material: What exactly does a Horcrux do to your body once you've made it? I don't mean the gradual degradation of your appearance, like how Voldemort slowly became more snake-like as his soul became more and more mangled. I mean, how does the horcrux function to serve its purpose? Obviously it ties your soul to the mortal plain, but how does it work? Do you just effectively stop aging after one is made, and stay the same age forever? Or would your body continue to age, but never die? Nothing is ever stated that implies horcruxes also grant youth or stop aging. For that matter, why was original Voldemort's body seemingly destroyed when his Killing Curse rebounded off of baby Harry? There's no mention in the books or movies that his body was found crumpled and lifeless on the floor of the Potters' house, just that his spirit was wrenched from it. If his body was left dead on the bedroom floor, but his spirit still tethered to the mortal plain, why couldn't he just re-inhabit his original body on the spot?

So when it just so happens that Harry and trio get detention, Dumbledore sent them into the forest with Hagrid to perhaps confirm his suspicions that the unicorn killer was Voldemort. To add to Harry Potter theory, I felt as though Dumbledore planned for Harry to reach the philosopher’s stone to possibly get rid of Voldermont. Dumbledore knew that Harry carried the sacrificial enchantment passed on to him by Lily and that Voldermont wouldn’t pass off an opportunity to get rid off Harry using Quirell. Dumbledore hoped that once Quirell lay his hands on Harry the protection magic in him would be awakened destroying Quirell alongside Voldermont who had taken possession of him. Quirell was stopped but Voldermont survived because of his hocruxes though he was severely weakened. I believe this was the moment that Dumbledore also realized that there was more to Voldermont because he shouldn’t have survived Harry’s touch and decided to uncover all his secrets.

This video made me wonder, why Voldemort made Horcruxes rather than creating another philosopher's stone? or making Horcruxes is easier than a second philosopher's stone?

Well you make good points, but honestly your biggest point debunking this is actually the _real_ reason why everything remains in-tact... The Obstacles would be _no challenge_ for Voldemort...Being such a powerful dark wizard, he'd literally breeze through them all... However...it's _not_ Voldemort that going through them all, is it? Like you said, the obstacles would probably be a challenge for an ordinary Witch or Wizard. Voldemort was just a malevolent spirit possessing someone at this point, with hardly any magical power at all - he wasn't "back" yet. He was diminished, not just in body but in strength; the Unicorn Blood was literally used to keep him from fading into nothing, but he hardly had any magic left nor could he use it without a body. So yes, Dumbledore knew that Voldemort had not yet returned; cause if he had, then he'd have little need for the stone. Dumbledore was expecting a mere servant to enter the castle to steal it and probably _not_ the man himself. The obstacles probably would've slowed down the average Death Eater that might still be kicking around. But Quirrel, who was an undercover agent and had studied the previous Teachers all throughout the year while planning these traps, probably had enough prowess or the inside-information to how to get around them...The only one that was tricky for him was Hagrid, which is why he spent most of the year bribing Hagrid to get the scoop on Fluffy.

I think yes he intended Harry to reach The Dark Lord, however, I do believe he was nearby ready to step in if he needed to.

It’s the same way with the wizards cup. Dumbly know that mad eye was a fraud. He let it play out because he needed to have Voldy to come to back his body to finally defeat him for good. When Dumbdore hears voldormor comes back to his body he gives a slight flash of a smile. He needed Harry’s blood to be used to bring back voldy. That way the love protection and horcrux mix with both of them, allowing the final face off to go down like it did.

Makes sense, like why would the Mirror have been in some random room for Harry to find rather than already inside that dungeon protecting the stone. Dumbledore definitely had to have known. And I think the obstacles were meant to separate him from his friends so they didn’t become unnecessary casualties when Harry and Voldemort met face to face

Well, it's a bit strange... 1. Hagrid introduced Harry to the wizarding world and became good friends with Harry. Hagrid owned Fluffy, the first obstacle. Hagrid is rather careless and made a lot of hints regarding the Philosopher's Stone, and he gifted Harry a wooden flute - which can be used to make Fluffy (the Cerberus) enter a deep slumber (any music can do that). 2. The second obstacle would have been for Neville - if Harry ended up being friends with him (who is also the second choice in the prophecy). But it ended up being Hermione that solved it, as she knows a lot of stuff, etc. 3. The third obstacle was made for a seeker, and Harry is one. 4. The fourth obstacle is a huge game of chess... and guess who's good at chess? Ron. 5. The fifth was a mountain troll. Harry, Hermione, and Ron had experience with trolls. 6. The sixth test was a potion's riddle that tested logic or whatever. It was most likely suited for Hermione. 7. The Mirror of the Erised. Dumbledore introduced it to Harry in a rather strange fashion. Blah blah blah... Anyway, these tests were Dumbledore's way to mold Harry into a curious/adventurous Hero. There are too many strange coincidences... Like, why would Dumbledore fly to that meeting when he has the Floo System/Phoenix/Portkeys?! Obviously, there is a puppet-master at work.
@JuanMataCFC3 жыл бұрын
i have 2 questions about Philosopher's Stone. 1. if Voldemort won the chess game and drank the correct potion to get to the Mirror, how did those obstacles "respawn" themselves when Harry, Ron & Hermione encountered them? 2. wasn't Dumbledore risking Voldemort getting the Stone by trying to get Harry to the Mirror? Voldemort would NEVER manage to get it out of the Mirror by himself, but if Harry was able to get it wouldn't Voldemort have a better chance to just take it from him than the Mirror?

The theory that I subscribe to about the traps: I agree that most of them were not intended to actually prevent Lord Voldemort from reaching the stone, instead, they were intended to give the appearance of protection while not granting much at all. I disagree, however, that they were intended for Harry specifically. I think that it is much more likely that they were weak on purpose to provide Quirrel with a false sense of safety. The thing I feel most people overlook about the stone's protection is the presence of the Mirror of Erised. Why was the Stone contained within such a powerful magical item? Could Dumbledore, a renowned Transfiguration Master, really not have conjured a more secure place to store the stone? Something, perhaps, that could not simply have been picked up and moved to a secure location by the thief? Surely, he could. So why then didn't he? I think that that can easily be answered if one assumes that there was a unique property of the Mirror that he wished to take advantage of. The known effect of the Mirror is that it shows the viewer their strongest desire. It also seems to inspire obsessive thoughts about it, as seen with Harry's reaction when he first encounters it and has been noted to drive people insane if they stare at it for too long. I believe that the Mirror's original purpose was to serve as a means to safely exorcise people who have been possessed by evil spirits or incorporeal entities. It does this by showing the possessing spirit their heart's desire, just like it does living viewers. However, unlike the living, the Mirror, if this theory is correct, would allow free passage for the dead or incorporeal, at least one way. This is supported by the prevalent supposition in our world that mirrors are doorways for the dead. The theory behind the Mirror is that any possessing spirit would be entranced by the life they see in the Mirror and immediately rush through it, only to find themselves trapped behind its glass for the rest of eternity. I believe that Dumbledore did not think Quirrel was directly possessed by Voldemort but was instead working for him. He probably thought that Quirrel would endeavor to steal the stone for his master, and eventually succeed at defeating the 'obstacles' in his way, given that he was, by all accounts, a skilled wizard. However, it would undoubtedly take him a good portion of the school year, especially as he would have to do it in secret and without arousing suspicion from his colleagues. Dumbledore could also both hinder Quirrel as well as monitor his progress by using Snape to directly interrogate Quirrel about his actions. This would ensure that by the time Quirrel reached the Mirror, not only would his teaching term almost be complete (ensuring that Dumbledore got the most teaching out of him as possible), he would be pressed for time and need to escape the scene as quickly as possible. What is the most logical thing to do if you're stuck in a place you're not supposed to be and the thing you want is locked in a chest you can't immediately open but can lift? Steal the chest to open later of course! Dumbledore expected Quirrel to do this, breakthrough to the Mirror and, failing to break its protection, steal it to present to his Master later. Voldemort would immediately look in the mirror to see if he could operate it, and be immediately entranced by its magics and locked away in his own pocket dimension. The one flaw with this theory is that we see Voldemort looking in the Mirror without ill effect at the end of the book. This doesn't necessarily invalidate the theory, however, as this can be explained as an effect of Voldemort's Horcruxes tying him to this plane of existence. Horcruxes work, after all, not by halting aging or preventing the destruction of the physical body, but by rendering it hard or impossible for the soul of the wizard to leave this plane even after the destruction of its body. As Dumbledore did not have proof that Riddle created Horcruxes until a full year after the Philosophers Stone incident, he could not have been prepared for this eventuality.

One problem in your line of thought... You are assuming they were trying to keep Voldy away from the stone, when they did not know he was a threat to it. Some of the obstacles may not have been good against Voldy, but the combined knowlage to get through all of them would be rare in any one person. They were protecting it from any power hungry person that may come after it, not specifically Voldy.

I doubt that a broom was provided. I think that Quirrel brought that broom with him and the keys just react to anyone making an obvious attempt to grab the key for the door. Even so, the defense is far too simple. The door could have been blasted open, or the keys rendered immobile by a spell. You jump right from obstacle 6 to obstacle 8. You skipped a number there.

I think Dumbledore did set it up on purpose to test the loving protection and if it was still there, I'm sure Dumbledore would have stepped in if Harry was in real trouble. If they can place charms on places to know when people enter them I am sure Dumbledore had one on the chamber and knew everything that was happening.

From what I've read it seemed He was full of himself and thought himself invincible that combined by the fact that he was winning the war, in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Harry asked dumbledore why Voldemort didn't use a philosopher's stone or the elixir of life to gain immortality to which dumbledore said that Voldemort saw himself above it because he would have to consume it regularly to keep his immortal status that didn't seem to catch Tom's fancy

Well the whole "Lamb for the slaughter" line from Snape does imply that Dumbledore had questionable motives from the very beginning, but on the other hand, it could be that the Hogwarts staff is really just that bad at enforcing security... which would honestly explain how most of the terrible things in the school's history even happened in the first place lmao
@landonletterman8313 жыл бұрын
I like the idea; Dumbledore, being a skilled ligilimaz (I'm not even gonna pretend I know how to spell it, but he can read people's minds), knew Quirrel had Voldemort (or, at least, suspected it when Quirrel suddenly returned able, and wanting, to block Dumbledore from something in particular), and more or less hired him to trap him in the school with the only person in the world with a literal charm against him on their person
@ClockworkMan133 жыл бұрын
I don't think any of the obstacles were necessarily easier or harder than the others. Rather, each one focused on a different skill/virtue. Depending on the person, some would seem easier than others, but by design no one person could get through all of them alone. It was only through the combined efforts of everyone involved that the stone was accessible.
@jackiewepps46943 жыл бұрын
I personally disagree with the fact that Dumbledore ordered Hagrid to pick up up the stone while he was with Harry with the intention on bringing it to Harry's attention. He could just as well have ordered Hagrid to pick up the stone as soon as possible, as it was an urgent matter. What I do think is plausible is that he, as is very obvious, wanted Harry to be able to get the stone out of the mirror. It can be argued that there was another obstickle. That would be Harry Potter himself. In this theory, Dumbledore relies on the protection that Harry's mother placed upon him, to ensure that Voldemort would not be able to get the stone, as he would not be able to touch Harry

Well..I guess it was absolutely Dumbledore's intention to make Harry meet Tom to (sooner or later) kill him when the time comes. Because Voldemort has always been afraid of Dumbledore, and the last knew it for sure, but he was also aware that his death is walking around and there might be someone purely wise to push Harry to the right way; but I don't think that any other professor could ever do that. Even Severus..

Dumbledore knew that the prophecy said neither could live while the over survived. And if Dumbledore was watching, he could have stepped in at any time to protect harry and the others. Plus Dumbledore knew when Voldemort returned, Harry would be Voldemort's number one target. So really, tasting Harry and his friends and also preparing them to face Voldemort was always a good thing. Cz they would have to face Voldemort either way. It is much better if they are prepared cz that gives them the best chance of surviving and defeating Voldemort. I also think Dumbledore knew that Voldemort would use Harry's blood to come back. Because Dumbledore knew Voldemort well and knew he would want to somehow get thru Lilly's protection of Harry. Dumbledore may not have been 100% sure thay Harry would survive. But i think he was fairly certain he would. So really everything Dumbledore did was good cz it was all to give the trio the best chance of surviving and defeating Voldemort.
