I'm pretty excited to see if Volvo makes something real out of their hydrogen concept project. It's the same basic idea as the Edison, electric drive, small-ish battery and on-board electricity generation. In the case of the Volvo hydrogen concept that's a fuel cell. And those are well understood technology. The Apollo moon missions had a hydrogen fuel cell for electricity generation, literally half a century ago.
@subwarpspeed4 күн бұрын
@@Stukov961hydrogen fuel cell has been the next big thing for decades now... Though I think for trucks it is a bit more plausible than for passenger cars where it's stupid. But the need for build out hydrogen fuel stations and hydrogen generation (if you instead go with fossil natural gas, why bother?). Fully battery electric truck near future is what Tesla is making. Identical trucks for local and regional deliveries returning to the spot where it can recharge. That would be something a hydrogen fuel cell truck could also work with. But generating the hydrogen gas via electrolysis would take more energy than charging them up directly. Edison motors work aim to be on the other end of the spectrum with vocational trucks maybe not operating in a predictable way. Potentially saving in fuel and then emissions is a good vision and doesn't need anyone else to build up new infrastructure for it to work (I do think electric charging infrastructure isn't as big of a problem it will grow hand in hand with the need of full BEVs). And if someone wants to get off fossil fuel they can try to get HVO100 (if the small amount of hydrogen is generated okay). I don't know where Canada is at but here in Sweden you can get that on many stations. Though the price is higher.
@adrianthoroughgood11914 күн бұрын
Fossil fuel burning has to end by 2050. So you've only got 25 years left of cheap liquid fuel. After that it's expensive efuel, or moderately expensive hydrogen, or cheap electricity stored in batteries. I hope Edison will always keep in mind that Diesel has a very limited time left. They are making variants of their trucks with no generator and extra batteries. I hope they will introduce a hydrogen fuel cell option too. The most important thing is they build the trucks in a way that lets the generator be swapped out later.

@adrianthoroughgood1191 the thing about diesel engines is that they can run on several biofuels with minimal or even no modifications. And they are going with scania engines, and Scania already sell literally thousands of fossil-free semitrucks already. They've got a selection of liquid methane engines (which can be produced from biowaste) HVO is made out of vegetable oil and is completely interchangeable, and mixes freely with regular diesel, meaning you can run any existing diesel engine on it. My own daily driver, a 2023 Scania R500 runs on B100, also called RME, which is made from rapeseed oil. It does require an extra fuel filter and replacement of some o-rings and hoses, otherwise works exactly like diesel. And at time of writing, the RME is actually slightly cheaper than diesel in Sweden.

I think Edison is undervalued, for good reason. There is no venture capital that artificially increases the evaluation of the company. They don’t have a huge staff and employees, especially CEO’s, that feel they should be entitled to a large income. Most of the components of the truck are off the shelf and already meet DOT specs. The only thing Edison needs is a manufacturing location that is not a tent in the Back of Chase’s parent’s house. Hopefully the site in Golden can be secured and a shop built quickly. Edison is doing the slow, methodical approach in a niche market that is not being served, and probably won’t be served by major manufactures for a while. Yes investing in Edison is risky, but it the right kind of risk.

I'm an investor. I appreciate the transparency Edison provides. I think their Right-to-repair philosophy will attract more EV adoption in the Semi/pickup truck space. Valuation at this point does not have a lot of meaning. If Edison goes under and they sell the assets and divide amongst the number of outstanding shares, that gives a minimum value. Currently they have 10 trucks in the mfg pipeline. Whatever they profit on those sales, if they would pay dividends, that should give a value if you say pay 5% return on our investment.

Luckily we have no debt. I think a lot of these companies we listed have more debt than assets. But yeah, its a risky investment. If we went under there wouldn't be anything left. I used to work at a Vancouver tech company before they went public, and the main metric was the Price to Earnings ratio... and what people expected to be earnings in a year, the next year and year after that. What the investors would need to know is : What kind of sales do you expect to make in the next 3 years, Will it be one topsy per week? Or a couple per week? How much revenue will there be per upgrade kit or per typical truck. And what sort of growth to expect. Going from private to public was a huge step which changed the companyI was at; public companies don't get to make the same risky choices as private companies. I hope you guys do well, you've got some smart people on your team. Take care.
@EdisonMotors4 күн бұрын
It's hard to use revenue when we are pre-revenue still. That's why we compared existing companies we are similar to. Our product is similar to them and our desired production level is similar as well the trucks our revenue per truck is similar to the other commercial trucks (but with a slightly longer time frame). In 3-4 years. we hope to get to 300 semi trucks per year. and hope to be at a price $500k/truck = $150m/year. During this all profit will go back into the business until we can build a large factory to start producing more to meet the huge demand we have and would like to see a long run goal of thousands of truck which turns into multiple billions of dollars. If you use future expected revenue and use a common multiple for our industry of Price to Earnings you should still get a similar value when discounting to net present value and factoring risk into it. We figure that these estimates have already been done for the other companies we named to help arrive at their valuations and the only big difference between us and them was timeline to get to market. I believe their promised timeline was too aggressive and was unachievable, but did promise a faster return for investors meaning that the Net Present Value would be discounted less. We want to take longer but use what we believe is a safer path forward. But I believe this math should have been done by many investors for all the other companies listed and the common Valuation was $1 billion to $4 billion.

@pamacons4 күн бұрын
@@Birdman3131it'll be years before otr is viable for full EV. Tesla claims up to 500 mile range. For longevity of the battery you're really supposed to keep the battery between 30-80% state of charge so that gives you a useable range of 250. The average simi according to a Google search travels about 500-600 miles a day so that's at least 2 charges per day. Of course the smart thing to do would be have a fuel island style mega charger (750kw) which Tesla claims "recovers 70% of battery charge in 30 minutes" since you really should only use 50% that gives you about 25 minute fill up which isn't much more than a regular semi full up time (obviously a regular semi would have much higher range out of each fill up) so each fuel island would probably need to be about the same size. Your second fuel up could be handled during your mandatory 10 hour off duty which would only require a charge rate of 50kw A local truck stop to me has just over 100 overnight spots and 7 fuel island spots so if you were to convert that to electric (obviously you wouldn't do that over night it would be quite a few years) that would be 10 megawatts. Assuming 50% average utilization during the day that would be 120 mwh production needed per day. At 5 hours of solar production per that requires a 24 MW solar farm and at a 5.9 acre/mw you'd need 141 acres to convert that station to 100% electric and solar. This is in my head math based on Google searches (reliable sources aside from Tesla) and large assumptions So probably wildly inaccurate

Anytime a new company starts talking about building thousands a year of busses, trucks or something else that expensive I think it's far more likely they are bogus than that they will actually be selling anything worth money. If they have one truck, buss or whatever they are talking about and says they will make thousands next year then something is most probably wrong. Creating a new buss, truck or for that matter car isn't something you perfect in a year and building just one prototype. You have to start small and build up. If you make ten trucks any problems on these are still possible to correct and there you have the second batch going. Once you have enough working trucks and no big known problems you haven't got a decent solution for it's time to start increasing production. Always keep track of all problem, and that includes problems with building and installing parts on top of what the users discover. If you are building a hundred trucks a year in a decade it's not a failure. Never promise more than you can deliver. But if you can deliver more than you promised it's probably fine as long as the quality is kept high and there is a market for what you make. Now I'm not a master of economics, I just know what I have seen working and are very negative when people promise to change the world by tomorrow. Large scale production isn't something you just kickstart on a whim. It takes time and takes a lot of work to get there.

Edison seems a lot less risky to me than a lot of other startups. Realistic promises, intelligent people at the helm, avoiding the pitfalls that kill companies early (debt and the like). So many of these others seem like they want to immediately become the next giant, up there alongside Ford and Peterbilt and Toyota and whatever else, and their promises and attempts at acaling immediately get away from them, because they forget to set up a solid base to scale up from, they just go straight from the prototype to a mass production promise. You guys at Edison Motors are showing that you're aware of and successfully avoiding all of those developmental traps, which would seem far more important in investment risk assessment than a startup price for a company that's already unofficially owned by like three people before it even gets to production. But what do I know, apparently I'm unqualified to be an investor because I don't have the income for it.

Your attitude on debt is healthy. You should look at Austrian economics using the Mises Institute. Debt fuels the boom bust cycle. Having a more classical "Get Tool, Build Product" mindset is so much healthier than the Debt wizardry the Keynesian economists propose.

Thanks Chace! I had no problem before understanding share prices aren't comparable, but I had thought 200M was a bit high. Apparently I didn't know better and others were much higher. It would seem some of them has been pumped by the venture capital firms you have declined. I've looked at the documents on investor site of how many trucks you expect to make in the coming years and it's realistically few. The real hilarity is that if hydrogen _does_ take off as a viable fuel, it would literally be a very simple engine/fuel-tank swap on an Edison truck, and suddenly it's a hydrogen truck.
@mcsike72644 күн бұрын
If hydrogen took over it will not be hydrogen ice it will be fuel cell since thats more efficient also that gets more miles than ice since yiu would need hydrogen in liquid form to get identical range to gas but hydrogen needs to be at -258C to be liquid so not gonnna happen😂
@EdisonMotors4 күн бұрын

its all fake money anyway 😅. I remember having negotiations with a startup regarding equity. And them being super tight assed regarding it. In the best case scenario it would have a value of like 200k in 5 years. And immediately want you to sign away like half of your salary for that lottery ticket. It obviously did not work out, just like 99,99% of the other situations like it. That 5% of the stock is sold at a specific value, does not mean that the other 95% would bring the same. Max fosh has a nice video about that. Anyway wish you guys the best , need to start somewhere 👍

I’m not saying they are a bad investment I am sure they are working hard but investing in any company at the start up stage is a huge gamble so only invest money you can afford to lose all off because that is a real and reasonably likely possibility. That isn’t unique to Edison that is any investment in a startup
@EdisonMotors4 күн бұрын
Thank you. I've been trying to say that as much as I can. This is a risky investment and I honestly don't want anyone investing any money they can't afford to lose. Any money you do invest in shares you likely won't be able to sell until the shares are publicly traded so the money will be tied up as well since Edison is a private company. Last thing I want is someone losing sleep at night over money they invested with us. We don't need the money that badly
@Sah-o5m4 күн бұрын
I think there are 2 types of investors. The first is "put money in XYZ company until ABC company looks better for next quarter". To this group when Apple spends $10 to make an iPhone that sells for $500, then they laugh all the way to the bank. Edison is not appropriate for these investors at this time. The 2nd type of investor is a person that sees a problem and wants to support companies that are working on the problem. These people are 'voting with their dollar'. Its not as profitable, but these investors sleep better at night knowing their money is being used for a worthy cause.
@zinzander29783 күн бұрын
@@Sah-o5m yea I agree there is also a big difference in how easy it is to value a company that has consistent revenue streams and a track record to one that is developing a new product. Ultimately when a company is developing a new product especially in a relatively niece part of a market you don’t know how it will go and whether there will be market acceptance and profitability ever. Where you have an existing company it’s much easier to look at the revenue streams and growth and come to a more accurate valuation. Which is exactly what his examples show there was massive hype with those companies and people got burnt. Investing in something like Edison you have the potentially to possibly make a much larger return if it goes well but also you are much more likely to lose your money as there is no guarantee it will come to anything. As far as being up front I think Edison is doing well but there are a lot of people on social media who are naive when it comes to investing and throw there savings in NFTs and all kinds of things (not saying Edison is the same as an NFT) so they just need to be careful not to get caught up in the excitement.
@ElixExo4 күн бұрын
Errmm this is nice and all but I don't think that's how valuation works. Great work eitherway, I think this definitely deserves to be $200mn but that's for the market to decide once you go public 😅

Will/could Edison Motors use the waste heat from the diesel to warm the batteries, if required? In my experience, posted EV range is measured at a normal summer temp to get the best number. In real life, 06 Jan 2025 in Edmonton AB Canada the day started at -18C or 0.4F. My Chevy Bolt's advertised range was 410 km or 255 mi. In my area, winter range at temp in real life is -18C 185 km or 114 mi. Winter "range" is Oct to Apr. Bit of shock and awe there. Not an issue for myself as I knew of this massive issue BEFORE, I purchased my EV with the intent to only drive around the city or close by. Also have a Lvl 2 charger installed in the garage. More than met my expiations.
@Sah-o5m3 күн бұрын
Edison put out a video on this subject for how to keep the batteries warm on the Emcon electric snow plow in winter. They intend to run glycol through the diesel engine to warm it up, then run it through the inverters, generator, batteries, and axles to warm them up.

Interesting how markets are evaluated. I have hopes for Atlas, it’s the only passenger ev truck that looked more like a truck and designed with the intention of a pick up truck. The rest of the ev pick up market is basically luxury commuter vehicles. Sort what separates Edison from the rest of the market, they’re building plastic highway cruisers. You should see the current state of ICE trucks thought. We’re getting brand new Terex- Advance Mixers with Cummins x12 with check engine codes right from the factory. The electronics are overly complicated for simple features. It’s like a Japanese toilet, buttons for things that don’t need buttons.

Here’s a little. Food for thought……. As a truck builder ,building a truck from scratch would it be worthwhile to look into building a utility vehicle for private property…like a all wheel drive bare bones truck/tractor type that has a variety of components….. flatbed with folding sides so it can be a dump truck when needed ,a crane behind the operators seating , with out riggers , a attachable digging bucket. Like bobcat has attachments, maybe build it so you can use bobcat’s many different accessories . A unit that a farmer or contractor can use that AS a base unit that can be configured for their own needs . A unit that is a generator/welder/ flatdeck/backhoe/crane/forklift/dumptruck/pumptruck/woodchipper/towtruck/snowplow/ snowblower/ etc. etc …. A base unit that is built with the ability to add a wide variety of components,to create a unique vehicle for the owner to create for their own purposes and be able to build and repair them selves…. This is kind of a weird concept. BUT ! It’s worth thinking about at least …. Have a fun day …. lol. You can call it THE REDNECK …!
