The problem is shipping the unit for under $1k.

This is so damned cool. I remember as a kid who grew up in a family that started with a small farm and smaller sawmill, what it was like to see things evolve. Some of the trucks we saw were amazing, owner built trucks that met their needs based on equipment, budget, pure profit, company image, and even for play. Yes, there was a bunch of dump truckers that all built their own small trucks. They would start with something like an old '56 Ford F-350, beef up the frame, put in a 4-53 Detroit, and set them up with a 4&4. One was a tandem, one had a single axle log trailer, a couple came up with air brakes, and one of the crew just wanted to sound cool and put some 'sneezers' on his truck so it would sound like he had air brakes. They were heavy on mechanics and not so much on beauty, buff and chrome. They were all cool. They would gather up logs from various clearing jobs that were generally given to them for firewood. Sometimes they had enough to make several loads of short saw logs. Those were the times when they would show up at our small mill on a Saturday. You could hear them coming up the back way to the mill which had a pretty steep grade. The last hill was so steep that it was not unusual that they would be tail heavy. I would hear a horn start honking and I knew it was time to get the farm tractor and a chain to pull them up to the top of the hill with the front axle in the air. Often these guys would make it a Saturday morning outing. They would all go load up their truck early on a Saturday morning and then show up at the mill as a convoy. You could always hear them coming. Old straight piped little diesels, grabbing gears with the fastest truck in the lead so the knew that they wouldn't get stuck on the hill. It always lit me up as a kid to see all of them come in. By the age of about 8-10 I was getting to unload them and scale the logs. They inspired me to love mechanics and be creative. I was the oldest of four brothers and the only one that fell in love with mechanics. It has become one of my greatest assets and pleasures and I owe a lot to those wildcat truckers. They will never know what a gift they were to me.

Can wait to start seeing thses big rigs with a powered fron axel
@leonhart24524 сағат бұрын
Front axle drive is an option on the pickup kits. At this time they are using a single motor axle on both front and rear. The rear can be upgraded to a dual motor set up. I think each motor is around 200 HP. So with a dual in the rear and a single up front you get 600 HP at the wheels. If the front can use a dual it gives you 800 HP. That's a lot of HP and a truck load of torque. I think you get about 3.5 ft-lb per HP with these electric motors. If that's right 800 HP=2800 ft-lbs of torque. And that comes in from zero rpms. These numbers are why the kits are for big pickups at least 3/4 ton. Deboss Garage is doing a kit in a Ram 2500. They installed a cat 4 cylinder diesel engine and did some testing. They are now adding the generator, batteries, rear axle, maybe the front, not sure on that and the controls to run the axles. Pretty interesting stuff. Kinda wish I had the money to get one.

Edison diesel/electric truck weight is comparable to diesel/mechanical truck. Truck has 200 kWh batteries. Battery only with fully loaded truck up hill is less than 30 minutes. Battery only fully loaded on highway is 1,2, or 3 hours. Battery fully loaded coming down mountain will regen and refill the batteries. Range fully loaded with onboard engine/generator is like 600 miles with 10 minutes fuel up.

Realistically how large of a diesel tank does a logging truck need? Should only need diesel for the uphill
@haloreaper10002 сағат бұрын
Normal log truck has about 70 to 100 gal cap in the pnw

Are the front axle going to be a drive axle as well?
@Sah-o5m4 сағат бұрын
Not on this truck

In the thumbnail, isn't the batery box hanging a bit low for an off-road truck? I'm concerned by what looks to me like 4 inches of ground clearance. Am I concerned for no reason?
@blarque8 сағат бұрын
hey, i am not sure, did they mention for which company they're building the thing?
@Sah-o5m8 сағат бұрын
Sounds like Tolko commissioned the build and brought in all the relevant parties. It may be a separate entity that actually "owns" the truck. Not sure.

How do you train the driver to use the truck or is this a non-issue?
@haloreaper10002 сағат бұрын
More or less a none issue. Hop in, turn a key. Release breaks and put in drive

When watching the video of an US truck turning around while logging, a Swedish truck + trailer can turn around in a smaller area, then a single US truck can do a 3 point turn.. why is not the Northern America ever going back to cabovers or in general just stop doing the long chassis for no reason to be make it easier?

What about the sustainability of the forest? Do the logging companys also seed new trees? I've seen a project were they want to use drones for seeding but it was a NGO, not a company. And do you deforestate or do you thin the forest?
@lifeteen29 сағат бұрын
Yup, the lumber industry in North America is very sustainable, they make sure they're not shrinking the forests because that's their own future they'd be hurting.
@Sah-o5m9 сағат бұрын
Drones for reseeding. Thumbs up.

Yeah, you can always apply to be a tree planter. It’s not easy work because the loggers are nuts and sometimes they log 45 degree mountain slopes but the pay is okay and it’s a great way to spend the summer

I was thinking that they could use a portion of their new site as a tree nursery. Be good to give something back.

Is it going to have an emissions engine?
@Sah-o5m4 сағат бұрын
The Scania 9 liter engine is tier4 compliant. Edison trucks are technically BEV Battery Electric Vehicles and not required to pass emissions (at this time) in Canada. This will change eventually.

What happens when you regen the battery to 100% and you still have a downhill to deal with? Dynamic brakes?
@emoryjenkins648110 сағат бұрын
They can spin the generator up and throw on the Jake brake
@lifeteen29 сағат бұрын
If I recall, it uses the engine brake on the generator.
